Let the people of Hong Kong decide! Britain or China. Unfortunately, China would never allow it to happen.

“Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China. On the matter of political reform, it is an internal affair of the Hong Kong special administrative region, it is China’s internal affair. (We) will not allow foreign forces to intervene,” the spokesman told a daily news briefing.'
In other words, shut up and sod off. I see the CCP hasn't changed.

So true. British are hypocrites. All that time they had governed HK, I don't think they ever offered universal suffrage to HK citizens.

They also signed the Sino-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Friendship in 1972 and even reaffirmed it in 1978. So I really don't think their signature means anything,

It's part of the deal China! Ya signed it.

During the 50 years after the Japanese left in 1945, did the British ever think to change the system so that the governor was elected by the HK citizens? Very unfortunately, not. I think Britain's parliament should launch an investigation as why Britain handed HK to the Chinese without a long standing democracy in place.

As usual, elephant200, you have a knack for remaining on topic.

Britian is fighting for her own country 'in one piece', Scotland is about to seperate from the UK and who wants to remember Hong Kong? Margaret has laid to rest already.

This is a huge embarassment for China. Typically, it has broken yet another agreement, lied about it and is going to be held to account in front of the whole world. Could anyone be surprised why China is so despised in the world? Well done to the Brits for standing firm and making this a big deal! China has terrible relations with all its neigbors, with the U.S., and now worsening relations with European countries. Says it all.

Back when UK handed HK back the world still had hope that PRC would move closer to democratic ideals. Still wanting to become a "major power" China agreed to may things back then, Now that they feel they have become a "major power" they don't hide their true fascist nature,
HonestDictator
We all know where this is headed. The PRC wants to believe government should have absolute authority to control people, and since HK has always been part of China land mass, they're going to go with the stance that it's none of the UKs business. Poor Britain... for once it would have been good if you'd actually kept a colony for once.
Taiwan's gonna be next guys, and our lame ducks in both US and EU governments had better step up the game to make sure the ROC still exists.

Way to go UK! Stand your ground. China's arrogance and increasing power grab attempts need to stop.
