Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879 and passed away at age 76.

Stephen Hawking passed away on March 14, 2018 at age 76. ( Pi day. March 14, or 3.14)

We are deeply privileged to have lived during the Hawking Era.

He was and is always an inspiration to me, he did not let a debilitating disease stop him from learning and achieving so much. When I am in self-pity mode, all I have to do is remember him and realize almost every problem is solvable.

Godspeed, Professor. May your every question about the universe now be answered to your satisfaction.

RIP Mr. Hawkings!

All I can say is thank you Mr Hawking !

It's passionate people like you, and the like of Lawrence Krauss or Neil de Grasse Tyson who opened my mind and the mind of countless other people about science and the universe.

I wish I had a teacher like you in high school !

I did not and will not worship his THEORIES

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_theory

Being a theory doesn't mean it's not proven.

unlike the atheistic liberal-left community

Atheists don't worship anything. Seems like you need to study a little more !

Good on him for living as long as he did and THEORIZING, but I did not and will not worship his THEORIES, unlike the atheistic liberal-left community

I don’t think it’s a question of worshipping his or any other scientific theories. It’s more a question of being persuaded by them. This seems to have little to do with political viewpoints to me.

It’s more a question of approaching them with an open mind.

@Bintaro

Spot on. I think those who know nothing about science and don’t care to find out much about it either, misunderstand the use of the word ‘theory’ in science.

As stated earlier, it’s a pity that some people don’t have the courtesy and decency to respect the death of a truly brilliant and inspirational man.

A truly impressive human being. He was actually very athletic as a young man; he was a rower if I recall correctly. Then his body failed, and they told him he would die. Instead he focused on his mind, lived another 50 years, and came up with some of the most brilliant thoughts of humanity.

I read A Brief History of Time back in the day. In the forward, he talked about how he was told that for every equation he put into a physics book, he would cut his readership in half. So he only included one equation in the book, e = mc2. The book was really interesting in that it discussed physics at a very advanced level, but all in theory, not in numbers/equations.

He was one of my heroes. But as an amazing man, he's managed to do what most of us never will, and achieve a sort of immortality in that his name will live on in humanity for generations to come.

"Life would be tragic if it weren't funny."

RIP

Considering the physical problems he endured and illnesses he recovered from I thought he was indestructible. He was a super human. Goodbye Professor Hawking.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

he may now see the truth Finally

What truth? He spent his life searching and explaining scientific truths with an incredible intellect and brilliantly clear and engaging writing style. As with Strangerland, I read ‘A Brief History of Time’ and found it amazing.

The kind of inspirational, brilliant and very decent man who gave our species a good name.

Make sure he gets on the banknotes in our lifetime.

RIP

He was a funny guy as well as being intelligent.

Goodbye Professor Hawking. Thank you for your contribution to humanity.

It’s depressing that a post like that could be thumbed down.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

RIP Stephen san!!

Thanks for everything, what a rare intellect  you were!!

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Said of his own "A Brief History of Time" - the least-read most-bought book of all time

RIP Hawking humour

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Actually everything he discovered is proven mathematically (theoretically sound) and some things still need a physical proof... It's incredibly difficult to measure the Hawking regulation, for example... Yeah, leave it to the religious Taliban to ruin his memory...

7 ( +10 / -3 )

RIP, Mr. Hawking. A genius ahead of his time, and yet one who could communicate with the laymen and women around him. He got dealt one hell of an unlucky card with the motor neurone disease, but despite that the man persevered in every way he could. One has to wonder a little if he could have been more had he had the use of his body, or if he was the genius he was because of the disease. I have no doubt he would still have been the same genius, but might not have accomplished so much. We were definitely blessed by his presence and his mind.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

The world has lost a brilliant light! RIP!

6 ( +9 / -3 )

A great man and great intellect. We shall not see his likes again.

*"He may now see the truth”? “He's in heaven”? *WT...

“I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken-down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.”

Professor Stephen Hawkings

A true giant amongst us.

Rest in peace...

A great loss, after an amazing struggle and epic contributions to our understanding of the universe we live in. He, like those great minds who were rightly-placed, well-timed, or simply luckly, have only ever helped the human race understand its condition. Unlike above references, he and no-one (reasonable) looks down from heaven because such a place is the evil fallacy of pyramid scams for thousands of years that would say and do whatever is necessary to rape and take advantage of people.

A great man with a great mind. I hope, unlike Hamlet's description of his father, we will see his like again.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Goodbye Professor Hawking. Thank you for your contribution to humanity.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

Hopefully, the legacy of Hawking will be people will learn more about science.

The hope that people will approach it with an open mind rather than carrying unscientific, unfalsifiable and outdated baggage with them is a bit optimistic.

Let’s just hope he can move some people forward.

so very sad

A truly remarkable and amazing man, the world lost one of the greatest Scientist to have graced this Earth. RIP!

A very sad day for the world.

*“Even if there is only one possible unified theory, it is just a set of rules and equations. What is it that breathes fire into the equations and makes a universe for them to describe? The usual approach of science of constructing a mathematical model cannot answer the questions of why there should be a universe for the model to describe. Why does the universe go to all the bother of existing?”*

--Stephen Hawking

Who would have thought that the universe would ever come up with entities as illuminating as he has been.

RIP Mr Hawking,

Raising a glass to you while enjoying you and the floyd.

He was the best human in my life. Why can I cry about somebody I never met?

3 ( +5 / -2 )

I hope this is not another nail in the coffin of the age of science.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

If you mentioned above that you did'nt agree with Stephen's thoughts and feelings, perhaps you could explain. I for one feel that Stephen's mind was so extraordinary that were quibbling about generalities is pretty useless. Also, the comment about how Stephen's beliefs were somehow liberal has to be one of the most naive statements I've ever heard. You really think only conservatives are religious people? We could go on for days.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

A great man of that there is no doubt. A sad passing too.

That said...I never agreed with all he said. (I can hear you all furiously typing now) I have my reasons. Some religious, some scientific, others just pure instinctive. We can all have these you know?...differences of opinion. The clue is in his title "Theoretical Physicist"

I'd like to see him honoured in some way for his contribution to science and The Simpsons (of which I am a fan)

RIP "Sir" Stephen Hawkins

2 ( +5 / -3 )

He was great in The Simpsons and South Park.  He will be missed.

Agree bintaro. Neil de Grasse Tyson & Lawrence Krauss are pretty good (imo the best) at simplifying scientific 'messages' without infantilising their audience. They've both become regulars on one of my favorites oz tv program 'q&a'.

One has to wonder a little if he could have been more had he had the use of his body, or if he was the genius he was because of the disease.

Often (well say occasionally) wondered the same. Would say the latter although "because' is probably too strong a word. Tend to think his disability was certainly a contributing factor (to his genius) though.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

I'm sad he's gone. I was going to send him a theory I had on certain subjects... unfortunately he's gone now.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Truly inspirational, Stephen Hawking was.

Here's a clip from a Star Trek The Next Generation episode in which he ha a cameo:

He know return formula, he will be back after travelling universe looking for bent time.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I wonder how amusing he would find it that people are using the mainly religious term RIP?

...who lived in the light of fact!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

He is one with the universe until he is born again in a new form. ..

RIP Dr. Hawkings. Very popular in Japan, as well as UK. He is now looking down from Heaven, with Einstein, discussing Scientific Theories, free of his disabilities.

He is now looking down from Heaven and discussing his Scientific Theories with Newton and not Einstein, born 300 yrs after Newton he always thought himself as reincarnation of Newton. Now he can discuss with Newton that Newton's works were all palagarised and never understood by Newton.

If there's a Heaven, I guess he's now interviewing God about the Big Bang, and of course, what created God in the first place.

Neil de Grasse Tyson!

Give me a break!

A paid actor who doesn't know his R's from his elbow.

Doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Hawkins.

Krauss...yeah, he's ok actually.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

hmm, didn't agree with his thoughts and beliefs at all, did agree with the possible future of AI. Now he will know all his thoughts and questions will or not be answered, wether wrong or right, he may now see the truth Finally ...
