Brittney Griner released from Russia in prisoner swap for arms dealer Viktor Bout

A basketball player with cannabis for the "Lord of War"? Something seems..unbalanced.

The heavy, disproportionate penalties in the drug war have always been an excuse for other agendas.

14 ( +25 / -11 )

Dragon, I was thinking the same.

Looks like Russia won this bargaining.

I guess the "optics" of getting her released before Christmas won out.

13 ( +22 / -9 )

Bout was one of the world's most wanted men before his arrest in 2008 in Thailand after a sting operation by U.S. agents who recorded him offering to sell missiles to people he believed were leftist Colombian guerrillas. Bout was variously dubbed "the merchant of death" and "the sanctions buster" for his ability to get around arms embargoes.

Clearly a fair swap. maybe it includes a promise from bout never to engage in arms dealing again

-20 ( +7 / -27 )

The only swap the Russians were prepared to do. Griner for Viktor Bout.

-2 ( +12 / -14 )

“Former President Donald Trump derided the exchange of a basketball player for a man in Bout who was "responsible for tens of thousands of deaths and horrific injuries" without including Whelan.”

He did nothing to release Whelan during his term, why complain about it now? He did however exchange release 5,000 taliban.

-4 ( +14 / -18 )

Takes over the Red Sox trading Babe Ruth to the Yankees for some cash as the worst trade in U.S. history.

11 ( +15 / -4 )

1 Griner is worth 10,000 Bout to humanity in my eyes. But hey, humanity and politics are poles apart, so what do I know?

8 ( +14 / -6 )

The only swap the Russians were prepared to do. Griner for Viktor Bout.

That was stupid, then in that case they should have left her there. We leave our marines there, but do a trade with a basketball player who broke the rules knowingly over a terrorist, this just doesn’t get more nauseating.

9 ( +27 / -18 )

So much being tough on gun control. This is like trading me for Aaron Judge

15 ( +19 / -4 )

We leave our marines there

I don't think 'we' had unilateral choice on who we leave there.

I personally think it's good that Griner is out, and if she had any gratitude she would do a free speaking tour to educate people to avoid places like Russia, China, NK, Iran etc.

-9 ( +9 / -18 )

That was stupid, then in that case they should have left her there. We leave our marines there, but do a trade with a basketball player who broke the rules knowingly over a terrorist, this just doesn’t get more nauseating.

Such un-American posturing...why are all our far-right friends such Russian-worshipers?

She was set up by the Russians who knew they wanted a bargaining chip...and now Biden successfully got her home...

Success as compared losing....

https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/analysis-donald-trump-and-his-terrible-horrible-no-good-very-bad-3-weeks/

The only way the previous guy could have achieved that was by exchanging her for some of his stolen classified stash at MAL...whatever he hasn't given to his BFF Putin already...

-6 ( +11 / -17 )

and yet Trump didnt "empower Russia" (remember them?) and "undermine US national security" by giving them their international arms dealer back.

In a 1 to 1 exchange for an America hating LGTBQPIA+? activist who moonlights as a basketball player and will back to protesting the flag and the anthem in no time, still ungrateful and entitled as ever.

yeah, good job empowering Russia and caving to their demands Joe.

-5 ( +14 / -19 )

I'm happy that Brittney is coming home. It was a bad trade, but when a life can be completely destroyed so easily, I can call it a "win", regardless.

Bout was arrested in Thailand in 2008, extradited to the US a few years later and sentenced to 25 yrs in prison for a number of convictions. It did 50% of the time, which is probably about what criminals who didn't directly murder someone gets in the US before being paroled. With the return to Russia, and the current way that Russia is cut off from the rest of the world, he'll likely never leave except to visit Belarus or a 'stan'.

He will certainly be on a no-fly list for friendly nations.

1 ( +11 / -10 )

She had pleaded guilty, but said she had made an "honest mistake" and had not meant to break the law. Last month she was taken to a penal colony in the Russian region of Mordovia to serve her prison sentence.

Funny that!

I’ve taken hundreds of international flights and I’ve never left my stash in my suitcase. And as they say, ignorance of the law is no defence.

4 ( +10 / -6 )

Why are all our far-left friends that preach about gun control so excited to let an arm dealer responsible for thousands of deaths walk free? Oh yeah, he did nothing, the guns and missiles shot out by themselves.

-3 ( +8 / -11 )

Meanwhile a US marine continues to languish in a Russian prison.

But, of course, he's white, heterosexual, and probably not a Democrat supporter, so screw him.

And this swap is insanely one sided. Putin is laughing at the US, and Biden is letting him.

It's the equivalent of the US giving up $10,000 for $5 in return.

6 ( +20 / -14 )

Biden is a disgrace. The fact that he left a soldier behind again isn't shocking. How would you feel being that Marine that is still there now knowing 100% your country has abandoned you. Especially for someone who condems their country and spits on the uniform you wear..

Such un-American posturing...

No, trading an ungrateful American for staunch American supporter is un-American

why are all our far-right friends such Russian-worshipers?

No, why is the left almost screwing loyal Americans over the American haters?

She was set up by the Russians who knew they wanted a bargaining chip...and now Biden successfully got her home...

And this administration capitulated and appeased the Russians, now our adversaries have a green light knowing they can kidnap Americans with ease knowing that this administration will cave in.

Ironically, the U.S. flag Brittany refused to stand for has covered thousands of caskets of U.S. service members (all ethnicities, faiths, and sexual orientations). Bullets and IEDs don’t discriminate, they kill equally.Thousands of these U.S. service members were "killed in action." Many due to weapons sold to Al Qaida from Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout; AKA "Merchant of Death," the prisoner President Biden swapped to secure Brittany's freedom today. The simplest definition I've heard for describing "grace" is "someone else paying a debt they didn't deserve for someone who did."Will Brittany now look at the U.S. Flag differently? Can she understand that the U.S. Flag and National Anthem represent "all" Americans and symbolize freedom, hope, and immense sacrifice? Will she comprehend there are families today whose sons and daughters never came home because they paid a debt they didn't deserve?

-5 ( +16 / -21 )

In a 1 to 1 exchange for an America hating LGTBQPIA+? activist who moonlights as a basketball player and will back to protesting the flag and the anthem in no time, still ungrateful and entitled as ever.

Sounds personal. I wouldn’t think about it too much if I were you, you’ll just get more upset.

Why are all our far-left friends that preach about gun control so excited to let an arm dealer responsible for thousands of deaths walk free? Oh yeah, he did nothing, the guns and missiles shot out by themselves.

By this logic the president of the nra and smith & Wesson should be arrested. Follow though then.

0 ( +9 / -9 )

yeah, good job empowering Russia and caving to their demands Joe.

You mean like demanding Ukraine bow to Russian demands?

3 ( +9 / -6 )

It’s nice that she was released, but the cost was very high. Also, if she did take/carry a marijuana product with her into Russia, she was extremely stupid. She’d have been imprisoned in Japan for doing the same thing.

Arresting U.S. citizens will also be more tempting for dictators who wish to twist Uncle Sam’s arm.

Again, it’s nice that she’s free, but a dangerous arms dealer with the blood of thousands on his hands is now on the loose.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

In a 1 to 1 exchange for an America hating LGTBQPIA+? activist who moonlights as a basketball player and will back to protesting the flag and the anthem in no time, still ungrateful and entitled as ever.

You mean Griner will soon be back in the US, free to exercise her constitutional rights and protest? That's terrible! I hate free speech!

As far as the "moonlights" bit- she's a professional basketball player. She makes her money playing basketball.

4 ( +9 / -5 )

Exchanging "the world's most notorious arms dealer, selling weapons to rogue states, rebel groups and warlords in Africa, Asia and South America" who was "one of the world's most wanted men before his arrest in 2008" for a drug smuggler.

This guy made plans to kill Americans.

Now he will be back on the field selling weapons--and Biden cares about Ukraine?

For a drug smuggler.

-4 ( +9 / -13 )

Great point

In figuring out liberal incompetency, I think so.

-9 ( +6 / -15 )

By this logic the president of the nra and smith & Wesson should be arrested. Follow though then.

Which would be a dream come true for you but I will let you continue to enlighten us how this was an even trade.

That was stupid, then in that case they should have left her there. We leave our marines there, but do a trade with a basketball player who broke the rules knowingly over a terrorist, this just doesn’t get more nauseating.

Well-put.

Incredible how those here crucifying Putin because of his attack on Ukraine now try and make light of the man who will supply Putin while he continues to attack Ukraine.

-8 ( +5 / -13 )

Incredible how those here crucifying Putin because of his attack on Ukraine

I think criticizing Putin for invading Ukraine, and murdering thousands is a fair criticism.

now try and make light of the man who will supply Putin while he continues to attack Ukraine.

lol Pardon? How do you think Bout is going to arm Russia? Does he carry around a weapons factory in his back pocket or something? No, what Bout did was sell Russian made weapons around the world. If one thinks the deal as a bad one, fair enough, but one is seriously over-playing his importance if one thinks he is now going to supply weapons to the Russians who made them. lol

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Biden cried uncle giving Putin what he wanted after seizing Griner hostage. She would never have stayed long in prison and Putin's sudden demise (which I expect and pray for) would have been the ideal opportunity to make a more equitable swop.

Really?

lol Pardon? How do you think Bout is going to arm Russia? Does he carry around a weapons factory in his back pocket or something? No, what Bout did was sell Russian made weapons around the world. If one thinks the deal as a bad one, fair enough, but one is seriously over-playing his importance if one thinks he is now going to supply weapons to the Russians who made them. lol

lol--always a pleasure to correct your mistakes. Let's look at how Bout sold and traded weapons that were not just Russian made lol. Here we go.

First, let's see where his residence was---Moscow?

*During Bout's reported operations, he is believed to have lived in various countries, including Belgium, Lebanon, Rwanda, Russia, South Africa, Syria, and the *United Arab Emirates

And now we see where Bout sold arms made in countries other than Russia:

*"a United Nations report stated, "Bulgarian arms manufacturing companies had exported large quantities of different types of weapons between 1996 and 1998 on the basis of (forged[24]) end-user certificates from Togo",[42] and that "with only one exception, the company Air Cess, owned by Victor Bout, was the main transporter of these weapons from Burgas airport in Bulgaria".*

Eastern European states to Africa:

*"Another suspected arms dealer, Imad Kebir, is said to have employed Bout's aircraft during the mid-1990s to transport weapons to Africa from Eastern European states."*

Bosnia to Iraq:

*"claims that Čengić was a business partner of Bout since then, when 200,000 AK-47 rifles went missing in transit from Bosnia to Iraq in May 2006. One of Bout's airlines was the carrier"*

Kenya!?

*Bout's network allegedly delivered surface-to-air missiles to Kenya to be used to attack an Israeli airliner during takeoff in 2002*

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

You mean like demanding Ukraine bow to Russian demands?

no, like giving back their arms dealer in exchange for basically nothing strategic in return.

an international arms dealer for an international drug smuggler isnt a good trade.

empowering Russia and bowing to their demands for the exchange.

As was said the deal was either this deal only, or nothing.

so Biden lost the negotiation to get what he should have gotten.

-6 ( +5 / -11 )

lol--always a pleasure to correct your mistakes. Let's look at how Bout sold and traded weapons that were not just Russian made lol. Here we go.

All of the countries you listed were Soviet-block countries. The guy sold Russian/Soviet made weapons, exactly like I said. The idea that he is now going to be procuring weapons from eastern Europe etc. for Russia is beyond farcical.

and its not fake outrage about undermining our security and empowering and emboldening Russia.

A bit rich considering you've previously advocated for Ukraine to beg Russia for peace. If that's not "undermining security and empowering Russia," I don't know what is. All in all, this just seems something else for the right to whine about.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Well, great for her, but this was a very unbalanced exchange, an international arms dealer murderer for a cannabis oil user athlete...

At least they would have included Whelan !!..

I think this shows the loss of hegemony that the US has had for a long time and its international weight is less and less in the face of powers that are not aligned with its thinking, such as Russia and China...

The big winner on this is Mr. Putin and it won't be the only time he wins..

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

But, of course, he's white, heterosexual, and probably not a Democrat supporter, so screw him.

This comment shows the sad discontent of the conservatives, but it is very pathetic to think that religion, sexuality or political affiliation are an argument to decide over a prisoner exchange.

But anyway, the conservatives have had very hard and funny blows these days, lol !!..

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

this also has caused more dissension with UAE and Saudi, who seem to have been frozen out of any credit for their assistance and participation.

https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/3767849-white-house-disputes-saudi-uae-accounts-of-mediating-griners-release/

its a me, me, me White House, isnt it? Im Joe Biden, I did this! (until the inevitable walkback because Joe needs Saudi oil)

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

but it is very pathetic to think that religion, sexuality or political affiliation are an argument to decide over a prisoner exchange.

this was not a primary consideration in why this was done?

5000 Taliban terrorists released by Trump. Biden didn't leave any soldier behind and negotiations will continue

Griner is as much of an American citizen as you are.

LOL No. Bosnia was not a Soviet bloc country.

Bulgaria was not a Soviet Bloc country in 1996

And you exactly mentioned Russia--not the Soviet Union, LOL

Let's review:

Cards fanToday  09:22 am JST

No, what Bout did was sell Russian made weapons around the world.

-10 ( +0 / -10 )

"Over 50 hostages have been released from 22 countries under Trump"

and no international arms dealers were exchanged in only a 1:1 trade while doing it.

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

no, like giving back their arms dealer in exchange for basically nothing strategic in return.

Got it. So a prisoner exchange empowers Russia. But Ukraine giving up land for a "peace deal" with Russia isn't empowering and emboldening them. Makes total sense.

Of course not, but trading HER for one of the most dangerous terrorists

One of the most dangerous terrorists scheduled to be released in 2029?

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Biden said the United States will continue to work to free Paul Whelan, a former Marine also held in Russia, after being unable to convince Russia to release him as part of the negotiations.

Paul Whelan is a former marine, not a serving one. An American citizen just like Grinder. Whelan also has British, Irish, and Canadian citizenship.

He was arrested in Russia on December 28, 2018, and accused of spying. On June 15, 2020, he received a 16-year prison sentence.

So Trump was president then what did he do to have him released? Nothing.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

So a prisoner exchange empowers Russia. But Ukraine giving up land for a "peace deal" with Russia isn't empowering and emboldening them. Makes total sense.

One Joe Biden chose of his own free will to do as a "good idea". No one forced him to make this poor deal that he has obviously thought about for months.

The other is not within his control.

-11 ( +1 / -12 )

and will back to protesting the flag and the anthem in no time, still ungrateful and entitled as ever.

But I thought you supported free speech and the right to protest.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

LOL No. Bosnia was not a Soviet bloc country.

Bosnia didn't exist until after the collapse of the Soviet Union, but it was certainly part of Yugoslavia. The weapons there were certainly Soviet made weapons.

And you exactly mentioned Russia--not the Soviet Union, LOL

My point still stands; Bout being released doesn't mean he's going to start selling weapons to Russia.

The other is not within his control.

You advocated for that. Let's be consistent.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Which would be a dream come true for you but I will let you continue to enlighten us how this was an even trade.

You’ll first have to find the part where I said that. I can’t.

Blacklabel

"Over 50 hostages have been released from 22 countries under Trump"

Yes, all is very good. Even better, Obama had 100 American hostages released during his administration.

The US government does not release the total number of hostages currently being held captive.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Obama had 100 American hostages released during his administration.

yes, it appears he did, in a series of lopsided trades of terrorists who returned to the battlefield.

Including Bowe Bergdahl, in exchange for five senior Taliban prisoners who later took leadership roles for that group after Biden's disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

Cards fanToday  10:01 am JST

Bosnia didn't exist until after the collapse of the Soviet Union, but it was certainly part of Yugoslavia.

lol The weapons certainly were not.

C-4 is a US made, not Soviet Union era, or a Russian weapon.

The right when a black lesbian criticizes the US : “how dare you! USA! USA!”

5000 Taliban terrorists released by Trump.

And 56 hostages recovered under his administration.

Griner is as much of an American citizen as you are.

Again, that’s not the issue, but I would never make it ever a priority to bring back any American that would spit on their country and talk bad about it or that they’re a celeb. Wait your turn.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

lol The weapons certainly were not.

And still the claim that Bout is going to sell weapons to Russia is absurd. By all indications he is a member of Russian intelligence- not some dude with a weapons factory selling weapons to Russia.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

bass4funk

you fail to understand, all American citizens are equal under the constitution and law even if you don't like one of them.

Grinder was given an extensive harsh prison sentence when a Russian in the same circumstances would have been let off with a warning.

Obama had 100 American hostages released.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

you fail to understand,

I fail to understand nothing.

Grinder was given an extensive harsh prison sentence when a Russian in the same circumstances would have been let off with a warning.

Ok

Obama had 100 American hostages released.

Good! As bad as he was even he wasn’t entirely as incompetent as this guy that for now occupies the Oval Office.

-7 ( +4 / -11 )

Three Americans are detained in Russia.

Paul Whelan

A corporate security executive traveled to Moscow in December 2018 for a wedding and was detained by Russian authorities on espionage charges.

In 2020, the former Marine received a 16-year prison sentence in what the U.S. has called a sham trial.

Marc Fogel

A history teacher from Pittsburgh who taught the children of U.S. diplomats abroad was detained in Moscow in August 2021. He had with him a small amount of medical marijuana he used for chronic back pain.

In June, Fogel, 61, was sentenced to 14 years at a labor camp.

Sarah Krivanek

Krivanek, 46, moved to Russia from Fresno, Calif., five years ago to teach at a Russian private school.

Last year, Krivanek was involved in a domestic abuse situation with her boyfriend and allegedly grabbed a knife to defend herself, nicking him slightly.

Krivanek is not incarcerated but is also not authorized to return home. She is waiting in a holding facility while she figures out how to leave Russia.

Despite him selling arms and weapons to several countries, you are going to try and seriously say he won't sell or trade arms with Russia?

Why? Because he is rehabilitated?

That's like saying Griner has given up pot.

LOL.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

Not in all states.

Even people with violent felonies on their records can petition to have their gun rights restored in these states, which award many pardons each year to give back firearm privileges.

...

These states include:

no, as usual, I am right.

All Americans have the same constitutional rights. Everyone has basic rights under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws.

There are grounds for denying a citizen the right to own a gun. Not only ex-felons.

Dodge! No one cares about her race or who or what she is. She’s being criticized for what she “said and did.”

Actually, it was Griner that spewed hate for her country. Go back and check her remarks.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

So Griner gets released for getting caught in Russia with weed, but people in America have been locked up for years for the same thing? I thought the US was at war with Russia, sending billions of tax dollars to Ukraine. The fact that the US can make deals with the "enemy" is mind boggling. There has been and are plenty of American citizens locked up abroad doing hard time, including marines. How about them? What a circus.
