They should. Texas and other states should sucede as well. The US was broken a long time ago, and it'll never be fixed. Was nice for a while while it lasted, but it's over. Donald Trump has proven to be not only the most unpopular president going in, and still at the beginning, but is going to push away from his vow of unity and ensure separation.

Considering a few thousand voters in other states get higher priority than millions of voters in California, abdicating is the right move for them. They should get Oregon and Washington to go with them as well.

It is not possible for a state to leave the US; the constitution provides no mechanism for it.

California will just build a wall. And make the US pay for it.

California will just build a wall. And make the US pay for it.

And the wall will have picture windows, so Californians can moon the people on the other side of the wall.

"Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton easily beat Trump in the progressive state, winning by more than 4.2 million votes, almost double the number of ballots cast for Trump."

But millions illegals voted for Clinton! /sarcasms

I honestly think Cali shouldn't separate. California wouldn't last economically as no other countries would recognize the new country, let alone want to do business with it.

Seems to be scary complicated. Millions on social security in California. What happens then? What about medicare? Natural disasters? California feeds the economy of the states big time. I don't want to secede. I want more creative solutions than that. Something more exotic.

Actually, it does. Amend the Constitution. The southern Senators abandoned the Federal government before attempting to do it. All they needed was to get a 2/3rd's vote of both branches of Congress or a 2/3rd's vote of 34 States (22-3) at a special Constitutional-Convention to amend it.

11 Secession States

5 slave states but still in the union

18 Free States, with California joining the Union in 1850, Oregon in 1859, and Kansas just barely in February of 1861.

The first impact of an independent California would be an instant water shortage, as much of the water comes from out of state.

Then the huge agricultural sector would die, burdened by water loss, overregulation and crime.

Then the state would eventually tax other businesses until they flee to friendlier climes.

I am all for secession, but I think California would be a landmark case of killing the golden goose. The state has a lot going for it, but those in government there are completely hopeless.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

It would be very interesting to see how the state of California would react too secession movement within its own borders. Lets say the more rural counties claim that the Cities and metropolitan areas don't represent them and they want to leave California. How would California react to such secession movements?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

A great move. Mexico could reclaim Alta California. The Fifth Column is already in place. Gringo kids will easily pick up Spanish. !Viva Mexico! (Sorry - Anglo keyboard!)

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

It must also really get on Trump's nerves that his own state outright rejected him and his views.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

These stories pop up every 4 years. They make for fun headlines but is ultimately unrealistic.

Not being much of a spring chicken, I have noticed various states (Kansas, California, Maine) make agreements with foreign countries expecially during Bush Jr's supposed leadership; states legalizing a federally-mandated illegal drug (marijuana). Before, under Reagan and earlier, they wouldn't go against the federal gov't. Now, they don't seem to care.

If Texas (oil) and California (6th largest economy in the world) secede, others will follow. The US, I feel, is breaking up and the Drumpf is only helping. (Texas, CA, Az, NM probably do more business with Mexico than the orange-haired PGOTUS realizes and No PGOTUS adviser will Ever tell him. They want to suck up too much.)

The US couldn't afford to lose Californian agriculture, same as California couldn't afford to lose the water. So even when California secedes, there will be a mutual dependency with the US that will be beneficial to both. Unless overlord Trump decides to tax the agricultural imports. Then California would just sell their food to Mexico and Canada.

Then the state would eventually tax other businesses until they flee to friendlier climes.

If that were going to happen, it already would have.

I am all for secession, but I think California would be a landmark case of killing the golden goose. The state has a lot going for it, but those in government there are completely hopeless.

Then why is their economy so strong?

Bring in Oregon and Washington and control the west coast. WSA! WSA!

This actually shows the amount of stupidity in our nation. It just shows how much Americans have completely lost their minds.

Here are the facts that people ignore. California somehow successfully secedes. The US government will not be required to provide them with military and national guard support, financial aids and backing, as well as many other federal services that they might need and all bases located there will be closed. California would have to create its own military force (how many people who aren't currently military would be willing to defend their new "nation") and funding for that force. They'll have to make their own currency... and without being able to receive certain materials and economic support for their new currency... (btw do they have their own mint)?

Russia and definitely the CCP would LOVE this. "United we stand, divided we fall" This would count as "mission accomplished" for governments that don't like the US. They'd waste no time attacking and invading the idiots while they're unstable for the chance to get a foothold directly on the US mainland. As I said, where are they going to get the military support? Stupid is as stupid does. And that is one very tempting cherry to pick. Would be a perfect time for some ungodly reason for Mexico to attempt some military "might" as well if they so chose.

This is what happens when arrogance, false pride, and complete lack of comprehension leaves the majority of people in a country. They stated how the election was an "emotional" damaged choice and Trump got into office, and they're guilty of the exact same thing. Monkey's paw logic again but this time on the other end of the spectrum.

California would have to create it's own currency (with no balance with the US treasury or any other nations financial backing)... which as a starting value will not be in good shape with the conditions.

And finally last and not least.... Many people have relatives in California... how many smart intelligent non reactionary citizen would stay there in a completely new and unknown territory and move to other states in the US? This is actually happening in my State... we have a lot of Californians moving here for work. They will LOSE the chance to VOTE for replacing the currently majority Republican government in TWO years! They will LOSE the chance to VOTE to and fight against the current US administration that they don't like!!!!! This shows complete and utter cowardice by the people in the state that they have no resilience and would rather try to cut and run instead of using their civil rights as US citizens to do proper political moves to resist

Then why is their economy so strong?

Because it still currently uses it's status in Statehood to transport and import goods from other states in the US as well as other economic investments locally. Take that away. Along with the other situations I mentioned above. It's plain stupid. People NEVER think about the REALITY of the world we live in. They don't comprehend CONSEQUENCES anymore.

I don't like Trump either, but at least I'm willing as an individual citizen to stand up for my country and keep my rights to vote him out of office, replace members in congress, and the senate and hold them accountable. It's 4 years at most, and the democrats have to come up with a better candidate than their Hillary debacle. And as I said 2 years for that. And they can blow up the phones and emails and letters in the meantime. Not be stupid enough to secede.

Right. I can see it now. "The Armed Forces of California". A draft and no one shows up. Hey, man, ya know... Peace. Smoke dope. Cool.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Then the huge agricultural sector would die,

You don't know much about California. 90% of agriculture irrigation comes from the Sacramento River delta, which flows from the western Sierras - all in-state. The only major "out of state" source is the Colorado River - though as it forms the border between California and Arizona, whether it's "out of state" is questionable. Regardless, all that water goes to LA and San Diego - they'd hurt in the short term but have a few other viable options (recycling of sewage wastewater - already done in my hometown - and desalinization).

This will never happen, of course, but as a theoretical exercise, it is interesting. Wonder how Unka Sam would feel about losing Camp Pendleton and all of the military facilities in San Diego? Losing those would end the US's power in the Pacific. Perhaps along with Oregon and Washington states, Hawaii would join too.

Not only is this dumb campaign to secede going to fail bigly, California is going to become a red state in 2020.

" California will just build a wall. And make the US pay for it."

Har! But I can top that, Stranger - Australia will build a wall and New Zealand is going to pay for it!

It is not possible for a state to leave the US; the constitution provides no mechanism for it.

That's what the British said about their Thirteen Colonies.

These stories pop up every 4 years. They make for fun headlines but is ultimately unrealistic.

Trump being President was also unrealistic.

No one thinks that California seceding would be easy, and that it's not going to come with difficulties. But that's no reason not to do it. The idea that their currency would have no value is ridiculous - they are the tech center of the world. They are an agricultural powerhouse. They have plenty of resources. They also have 30 million people - similar to the population of Canada, with a much smaller area in which to defend, so the idea that they couldn't put together a military is also quite ridiculous.

The more I think about it, the more I think California seceding is a good idea. Most of the rest of the country basically said that their votes don't count, that because there are so many of them, they shouldn't count. The electoral college prioritized the votes of a few thousand people over millions. California is obviously quite unified - the democrats got something like twice the votes of Republicans in the state. And anyone who has spent much time in California knows the people there are quite different than other Americans, so it's mostly only sentiment keeping them together.

The Western States of America has a decent ring to it as well.

Go California! I'd live there.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

This proposal is ludicrous. California voted for Secretary Clinton. What happens when President Trump leaves office? Does California try to re-enter? When NK sends the nuke to San Francisco, does the USA tell California to deal with it? California has a high income tax and sales tax. Will they be increased to pay for missile defense? The USA is in the Protest Mood. It is fashionable and unproductive, but it give the participants a "fuzzy, warm feeling of unity" and two minutes on national or local TV. How many of these protestors called in sick to their employers, or better yet, how many actually have jobs?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Water, It will get plenty supply from dam and lakes from Nevada that promoters wouldn't worry. It can go alone. School system is far better than Sanders was promising. Also Disneyland is in the state.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Perhaps California could be split into 3 or 4 different states. That would add senators and EC members.

Amending the Constitution to remove California would never happen. Why would the other states agree to cut off a leg?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

The US couldn't afford to lose Californian agriculture

Yes they could, remember that the USA imports more than half of its food that it consumes. Then you also factor in that the USA is estimated to throw away nearly half of its produce. The truth of the matter is that as soon as California leaves a lot of the farms in the other states would simply change the crops they produce, instead of wheat and other grains they would begin to grow fruits and vegetables.

In mid states in USA, each state officials are hoping to have economic gains by bringing oil pipe line from north to south. There is no need for such plan in Calf. And Calif don't have to spare their income from huge trades, Pacific ocean using trades are more than enough. If Wa and Ore join Ca, it will be bigger country than Japan.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

One potential fly in the “Nationhood California” ointment is the fact that 31% of Californian voters voted for Trump. Trump carried 25 out of 58 or 43% of Californian counties. Apparently there are quite a few “deplorables” out there in the Golden State and they could very well prove to be speed bumps on the golden road to unlimited devotion that the affected sophisticates see as their ordained path.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

This nothing more than wet dream by dust bunnies but I have a proposition first, split California into two states. Northern California can continue to use Sacramento as capital and Southern California can establish capital in San Diego, each state shall establish nick name as Land of Fruit and Land of Nuts respectively.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

@commanteer

I imagine the US wouldn't respond with such deplorable act? water is among the basic human needs.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

California secession? More from the "resist Trump" gang. The Democrats put all their eggs in one basket then dropped it and the leaders seem not to understand why yet and so can only offer their supporters "counseling". Among the few Democrats who seem to be awake there's one in Massachusetts and his name is Joseph Kennedy.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

California secession? More from the "resist Trump" gang.

You mean the overwhelming majority of California voters?

Sounds like it's the will of the people to me.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

You mean the overwhelming majority of California voters?

Making the assumption that the overwhelming majority of California voters want to secede from the Union might just be a little too, presumptuous.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Good thing I didn't make that presumption then.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

They'll have to make their own currency...

Not necessarily. Palau and Ecuador use the US dollar.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Various states in the US will secede in stages. We're in the first stage now where various states make international agreements called memorandum of understandings which benefits the state and the other country or city in another country.

California as a few with China, Japan, and Mexico, among others. New York has one with France. Eventually these memorandum will grow in importance and value until other countries realize its best to circumvent Washington DC and negotiate directly with the state in question. (High tech - California's Silicon Valley and Washington's Redmond; agriculture - California and midwestern states, etc.)

Do these memorandum circumscribe US federal law? Possibly not. Not now. One of California's agreements with Mexico is to increase tourism in both places. Hard to do with a boondoggle, er, I mean wall.

As for money, these countries use the US dollar as their currency: Ecuador, East Timor, El Salvador, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau, Turks and Caicos, British Virgin Islands, and Zimbabwe. Ecuador and El Salvador switched from their currency to the US dollar after NAFTA was signed. Will they switch again when the PGOTUS tosses NAFTA in the trash? Does anyone give a sh***t if they do?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

"They'll have to make their own currency..."

They'll just replace Washington, Lincoln, Hamilton, Jackson and Franklin with Clinton, lol.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Alaska and Arizona may join. However, Country California needs toy many US system such as Country tax service, Then create several independent state that has o state income tax and business tax rate in order to invite Texas and Nevada.. well, too many copying. So maybe California Country is more beneficial.
