The irony is that these solar plants and wind farms can't be built in California because of the impact they will have on the environment: killing condors, frustrating tortoise, etc. Many of these plants are being and will be held up for years fighting lawsuits from environmentalists. So, I guess that means in 2020, even more of California's power is going to come from good old racist Arizona. At premium rates. Oh, the irony.

At least in Michigan we know that we're in crippling debt with horrible unemployment. Must be nice to pass laws that will further cripple your businesses and make life more expensive for everybody in general just so that Al Gore will grace you with that creepy smile of his, maybe even take you out for a night at the primaries. I guess it's all the chems in the water over there.

"Gov Jerry Brown on Tuesday signed legislation requiring California utilities to get one-third of their power from renewable sources, giving the state the most aggressive alternative energy mandate in the U.S."

This will no doubt have the conservatives frothing at the mouth - how dare anyone try to create an energy system that will create cleaner air and water for conservatives, their children and grandchildren?

Being from, and currently living in Arizona, I find this remark very amusing. At the same time, I really, really hope the nuts stay on the left coast rather then moving along with too many of their ilk to the 'racist' state of Arizona when more and more jobs leave the state. Its much nicer here without them.

It won't affect them, as most of them left that state long ago.Unfortunatley for California even if these goals are achieved there is little hope that the place will return to its former glory.

More energy is good, particularly when you consider that they've demonized nearly every single form of energy generation possible. I mean if it was up to the eco-nuts, we'd be living in caves. And I'm all for anything that reduces dependence on foreign oil, I just also realize how prohibitive the cost is, and how inefficient the sources are.

Even more unfortunate, the costs involved in this will mean more job losses in California, meaning more people leaving the state to find jobs in other places. This means lots more loons leaving the left coast. This unfortunately is going to change things up as the loons will keep voting for loony policies and people, the same policies that forced them out of their previous state...

Our Golden State has only 1 governor, not it is Jerry Brown and it is his 2nd time around, the first time he was our governor, he was going out with Linda Rondstant. Back to renewable power, most homes and buildings in California SHOULD have SOLAR panels, in fact I think it should become a mandatory NEW LAW but it is not yet, and even here in Tokyo after the mess with Fukushima and TEPCO it would be nice it Mr.Ishihara helped up pay to get solar panels ASAP to all of Tokyo!

If the US was serious about energy it would put a $2 a gallon Federal excise on petrol and force Americans out of their gas guzzlers and into a smaller vehicles that use just 25% of the fuel per mile the average US car does, and join the commonsense of the rest of the world. That would generate a trillion dollars a year and help the Federal Government towards balancing their massive budget deficits.

The US has abundant supplies of coal and has to look to genuine reliable resources from within its own border for its future. The Californian idea of getting 33% of the base load power from wind or solar is rubbish. It is too expensive and unreliable, and has to be subsidized heavily by someone and will send more Californian jobs to China etc., including the research and making of solar panels. The State of California is in dire financial strife and they come up with this! Get your taxes on the rich up substantially and start living within your means before playing Russian roulette on energy and producing power the declining US middle class cannot afford. Man made warming is a physical impossibility on a world scale. We are only 2000 years away from the start of the next ice age which will coat the US in deep ice. It will take that long for any impact of a reduction in carbon dioxide gas to occur anyway even if it was a real issue. But no one else on the planet is really trying. We used far less resources just 40 years ago when we made our own lunch, put it in the paper bag we got from the fruit shop, and wrapped our rubbish in biodegradable newspaper when binning it. Oh how life life was so much simpler and cheaper then and commonsense was common.
