If what the citizens say is true about their PM, then he himself a local version of a 'trump' in regards of being being a butt-kissing wimp to a foreign government. The people have a right to be angry, but taking it out on the capital's Chinatown is wrong and stupid. Not cool at all.

This PM should be voted out in their next elections after this shamozzle.

Well done to Papua New Guinea and Australian peace keepers. Both nations helped out their close neighbor very quickly and the first signs of peace have been restored.

Let us hope it stays that way, and that the people can all get more than one meal a day.

And guess which country was funding the largest province which tried to declare independence from the rest of the country?

Seems "mostly peaceful"...

The solution is to bring in Australian peacekeepers who are corrupt and beholden to the same foreign interest?

The Chinese embassy had told their citizens to stay inside.

Three found dead in one burnt out shop.

@Steve,

Maybe better to have Australian peacekeepers that the alternatives.

Corrupt? Do they take bribes?

Beholden to Whom?

These police, soldiers and sailors are worlds best. Beholden to Australia and it's people.

@Steve Hermitage

What kind of a comment is that? I’m interested to hear how you justify that comment.

Australia has sent a number of soldiers as well as Federal Police officers to assist the Solomon Islands government in restoring law and order, we are not there to interfere in their internal policies or take sides in the dispute.

Here, some light reading for you;

Dreadful.

Peter, your irrational patriotism is senseless.

Australia's economy is totally reliant on China, and Australia is reliant on the US to protect it from China taking the country by force. Besides, there is no need for China to waste resources on an army invasion, when it is already taking over Australia via acquisition of real estate, manchurian candidate politicans, etc.

Australia's economy is totally reliant on China,

No, it isn't.

and Australia is reliant on the US to protect it from China taking the country by force.

So what? We are not the only nation that has the US underpinning defense.

Besides, there is no need for China to waste resources on an army invasion, when it is already taking over Australia via acquisition of real estate, manchurian candidate politicans, etc.

The UK and the US have many more assets in Australia and many more politicians that are pro western so your lies are pathetically transparent.

China owns nothing in Australia that cant be taken away at its discretion.

China is a waste of space, and totally irrelevant to the Australian people. Wanna be rulers of the world but will never be that, ever.

Three dead, burnt-out bodies and very little reaction. I guess people here are waiting for confirmation of their nationalities.

First of all, the country shouldn’t have locked down its borders and crushed their own economy.

@ Steve Hermitage.

Australian forces have been sent there to restore peace, we were there previously in 2003 for at least 15 years and helping the country. The Solomon Islands are in our backyard and we have maintained a stable relationship all this time.

not sure how compromised smcp is by the ccp, but the fact that they report on the tidbit below is interesting:

https://www.scmp.com/news/china/diplomacy/article/3157542/beijing-condemns-solomon-islands-violence-and-attacks-chinese

(might be paywalled...)

One of the few buildings to survive the burning in Chinatown was one that hung at least four Republic of China flags, representing Taiwan

Nice to see the Australians lending their military to help secure the power of a pro-Beijing thug instead of standing up for the people who want these thugs out. Yeah, good job Australia. Hope you are proud of yourselves.

Trump has nothing to do with it, relax.

What began as a small protest on Wednesday quickly descended into a violent free-for-all,

Sounds familiar and that behavior should never be encouraged.

with poor Honiara residents joining anti-government protesters to rampage through the shattered glass and burnt-out remains of businesses for things to eat or sell.

Ok, so in other words their government wasn’t listening to the people at all it would seem.

Two years of pandemic-induced closed borders have left the already ravaged Solomons economy in tatters, deepening widespread joblessness and poverty among the population of around 800,000.

When you live in a poor country and the government enacts the same draconian policies as in a developed first world nation, the repercussions can be devastating to the point where coming back is literally impossible especially if you live on an island and depend on fishing and tourism.

I agree to a point but….

The pro-Beijing leader claimed foreign powers opposed to his 2019 decision to switch the Solomons' diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to China were behind the disturbances.

The people aren’t stupid, they know where this is heading and they don’t like it or Beijing one bit, so I can see and even if it’s not right, can’t really blame them when you see what’s hanging over their heads.

Australia will not interfere in the political situation in the Solomon Islands but will work to maintain peace. Who is in charge is not as relevant as who comes in to keep the peace.

@DesertTortoise

You narrative is tainted and incorrect, and this is surprising coming from you. Australia will not do what some others do and orchestrate a regime change. It is not our place to choose for the people of Solomon Islands, only to support their people in a time of need.

China influences through high interest loans and Australia needs to keep countering with free aid and support on the ground as needed.

At the end of the day any government recognizing China over Taiwan seems to be a pro-Beijing thug by your reckoning. Solomon's are now in a huge club that includes Europe, America and most of the world.

China is insidious and must be stopped. But there is a right way and a wrong way. Australia is doing what it must to keep China out of the Pacific neighborhood. Doing nothing would invite the Solomons to send an invite to China to assist and NOBODY wants Chinese forces in the Solomon's.

Sometimes it is better to think logically than shoot from the hip.

Three human lives snuffed out and for what? It's gotten so cheapened everwhere. Here in the USA this would be just another day for you and me in paradise.
