The good people of Canada were embarrassed and outraged by this fringe group of far-rightists who invaded their city and used terror-like guerrilla tactics to block roads/bridges and throw people out of work...

By supporting these insurgents, the far-right clearly showed it's so-called support for law and order was a complete farce...another conservative value ditched in its fealty to the MAGA-sphere....

Law and Order wins elections - and the current government will be rewarded for dealing with these far-right dissidents like the criminals they are...

Petty bickering aside, this is truly a sad day for my country. I did not vote for Justin Trudeau, yet he IS my Prime Minister, and the head of my country. I don't expect to agree with him at all times, but I at least thought I could tolerate his government until something better came along.

I was wrong.

This isnt about Joe Rogan, or Trump, or white nationalists, or extremism, or any other pet shibboleth that people may find convenient to mention. This is about basic and fundamental liberty. The government of Canada imposed de facto martial law, then suspended Parliament because the police (acting under the authourity given by the government) began to evict a group of loud but entirely peaceful protestors. There was not one broken window, not one burning car, not one firebomb thrown. Anyone who was actually on the ground could see that this protest was almost a celebration.

People are being hounded for donating money to a perfectly legal cause. Threatened by retroactive legal sanction. Outed by the media on the basis of stolen data. This has got to stop.

The opposition parties have been feckless. Worst is Jagmeet Singh, who represents what was always called ""the conscience of Parliament"- the NDP. He is becoming the PM's most useful ally in this- did he forget that the protestors are actual working people, the ones he claims to represent? Yet he climbs on board the Trudeau coattails with glee.

The precedents that are being set are terrible, and do not bode well for the future.

...the Chief of Police in Ottawa is promising to hunt down everyone he can identify that was at the protest, even if it takes months.

These are shocking over-reactions to a completely peaceful and justified act of civil disobedience. The truck drivers were the ones who toiled on when there were no vaccines, delivered food and medical supplies while idle progressives sat around at home in their onesies and played with their Mac books. Yet now they are the enemy...

The only other way to remove trucks that obstruct people’s lives and livelihoods would be to cave to these protesters demands. Democracy doesn’t work when the heaviest trucks determine law. These protesters are holding the country hostage for something that is not even popular.

PlasMonkey; the Act was not necessary to end the protests. The police in Canada already have plenty of power to do so. The bridge blockades ( a stupid idea IMHO) were removed prior to the Emergency Act bein invoked. All that was left was a small group on and near Parliament Hill. Where else should people go to air their grievances, if not the seat of government?

No, the Act was invoked to hunt down and persecute the supporters of the protest, to give the government more power over financial transactions and communication.

The protests would have ended if even one Liberal cabinet member had stepped outside and actually...listened... to what the protestors were saying. Instead, they were vilified and slandered and sneered at. How would you expect them to react?

I can't believe I have to do this again, but: I actually went through the VAERS responses. I'm not like you. I don't read some far-right anti-vax whackjob online say "VAERS TELLS US THAT EVERYONE IS BEING KILLED BY VACCINES" and repeat it uncritically.

"No side effects" was reported to VAERS as a side effect of Covid vaccines thousands of times.

Hi kuruma, there is no evidence of that whatsoever. If there was zero violence in three weeks, there was no national security issue in play. Unless you count barbecues for the homeless and bouncy castles for kids as a national security issue.

Nah, Trudeau lost the plot. Either he got bad advice or he panicked. I mean, the Emergency Act wasn't even invoked in the wake ot the 9/11 terror attacks, or the covid crisis in its initial fury.

This is going to be his legacy, and a terrible precedent for future governments to abuse.

How about Trudeau being a man and meet with the truckers and hear them out?

They will continue to hold people hostage by the truckers when they refuse to drive.
