Canada blocks bulk exports of some prescription drugs in response to Trump import plan

in response to outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump's efforts to allow imports from Canada to lower some drug prices for Americans.

The only prescription I have is for contact lenses. They are manufactured about 50 miles from my home, but cost $10 more per box if I buy them from any US supplier so I get them from Vancouver, Canada to save money. People who live on the border with either Canada or Mexico, especially retirees are known to make trips into those countries every 90 days to get their prescriptions refilled. I recall my parents saying they could save over 50% by going to Mexico for the exact same drug.

Profiteering by the pharma industry in the USA is crazy, but well known for hiring ex-cheerleaders to help doctors decide which drugs to prescribe. That's why the medial insurance companies control which drugs are covered under their plans. We can always choose the name brand which isn't covered or buy the generic which is, but had a fairly low "co-pay." I'm sure there are other posters here who know more than I.

I do know that some grocery stores here will fill certain prescriptions for free just to get people into the store. These are long-time, well-known, non-patent drugs that are cheap. A partial list:

Metformin (for diabetes)

Lisinopril (for high blood pressure)

Amlodipine (for high blood pressure and angina)

And 14 days of certain antibiotics:

Amoxicillin

Ampicillin

Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim (SMZ-TMP)

Ciprofloxacin (excluding Ciprofloxacin XR)
