Canada pledges temporary visas for 5,000 Gaza residents related to Canadians

Canada said on Monday it would grant temporary visas to 5,000 Gaza residents under a special program for Canadians' relatives living in the war-torn enclave, a preparatory move in case they are able to leave in the future.

That figure is an increase from the 1,000 temporary resident visas allotted under a special program for Gaza announced in December, the immigration ministry said in a statement, adding that many people had expressed interest.

"While movement out of Gaza is not currently possible, the situation may change at any time. With this cap increase, we will be ready to help more people as the situation evolves," Immigration Minister Marc Miller said.

The minister has previously said leaving Gaza is extremely difficult and dependent on approval from Israel.

In one of its latest attacks, an Israeli airstrike triggered a massive blaze killing 45 people in a tent camp in the Gaza city of Rafah, officials said on Monday, prompting an outcry from global leaders.

Canada has been sharing the names of Gaza residents who have passed preliminary screening to local authorities to secure their exit, Miller said. Israel and Egypt are important to the program's efforts toward reuniting families in Canada, the minister said.

A spokesperson for Miller said 448 Gazans had been issued a temporary visa, including 254 under a public policy, and 41 have arrived in Canada so far.

Nearly 36,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's offensive in Gaza, according to the local health ministry, and an estimated 1.7 million people, more than 75% of Gaza's population, have been displaced, according to the U.N. Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA.

Israel launched its military campaign after Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israeli communities on Oct. 7, killing around 1,200 people and seizing more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Rafah strike.

Before anybody says anything on this with some anti-immigrant screed, I will mention this true story. Two people, Polish Jews who survived the Holocaust were allowed to settle in Canada and start again. They married and fathered a son in the Toronto area.

His name is Gary Lee Weinrib, better known as 'Geddy Lee'.

Canada support take a side? That will be called "Antisemitism" right? However it's better move compared to other G7 countries.

Temporary? When or if they leave Gaza the Israelis will NEVER allow them to return. This is one of the golden rules of Zionism. A land for Jews and Jews only!

Canada special program for Ukrainians was 500,000 no need for relatives in Canada and full government relocation support!

Syrian refugees was also only around 23,000 !

Now can anyone tell us the difference between Palestinians Syrians and Ukrainians?

In the early 70s, before they became famous, Rush performed a concert at my high school. I was there to see Alex, Neil and Geddy arrive; when they stepped out of the taxi, a cloud of strange-smelling smoke wafted...

On topic: will the refugees arrive from Gaza and contribute to Canada, in the form of music, culture, business enterprise, etc?

Now can anyone tell us the difference between Palestinians Syrians and Ukrainians?

Yes, thankfully, we can… there has been a large Ukrainian-Canadian presence in the country for generations. Thanks for asking, though.

What Gazan's need is a Cease Fire and a complete stop to the flow of weapons and bombs to Netanyahu and his war mongers.

Granting Temp. visas USELESS when your people are being slaughtered.

You mean the ones that hid Nazi collaborateurs, Camp guards and have memorials to leaders and members of the OUN responsible for things like Massacres of Poles in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia, and guys like Yaroslav Hunka, a Ukrainian Canadian who fought in the SS Division Galicia also previously a member of the Ukrainian auxiliaire police that rounded up the Jewish population in the Babi Yar massacre!

Oh OK got it, Palestinians need more right wing white supremacists support, to enter Canada!

Well the Russian war criminals could remain in Russia, so that is a pretty empty complaint.

The difference is easy to spot. Ukrainians are not causing social disruption, occupying public spaces, threatening people nor shooting at buildings.

Hopefully the angry ones with a serious grudge won’t be visiting the U. S.

Let’s hope for their sake they don’t.

This is cynical political virtue signalling.

How are the 5,000 Gaza residents related to Canadians supposed to leave Gaza?

"While movement out of Gaza is not currently possible, the situation may change at any time. With this cap increase, we will be ready to help more people as the situation evolves," Immigration Minister Marc Miller said.

Please explain how?

Will the 5000 need to swim and thumb a lift?

Either way all will require Israeli government approval.

You should check Canadian news from 2 years ago, Russian businesses and churches were attacked especially in heavily ethnic Ukrainian areas of Canada, but then no need for protests by Ukrainians the political power they have in Canada, they got everything they wanted and more!

I wonder why supporters of Palestinians are protesting?

Let's see... Ukrainian 500,000 refugees with Canadian government (tax player's money) 1000 Palestinians no government money.

Ukraine billions of Canadian tax money (while cutting our military budget) Palestinians, nothing but money for Israel!

I mean why should anyone be upset about this disparity!

I mean blonde hair blue eyes Europeans need more than those dark skin people in the middle east, why else would Canada only take 23,000 Syrians but 500,000 Ukranians?

Its is interesting the Bad bad Russians crowd here just love to hate Palestinians and by extension Arabs!

Funny how one Ukrainian is killed they are calling every Russia and anyone that doesn't think like them names.

Bur 30,000 plus Palestinians are killed they have every excuse to justify and some even celebrate it!

I don't like using this word by Racism come to mind!

As long as you are clear on who Russia best equates to, and its not the Palestinians.

Not sure why you mentioned that, His parents weren't the first legal immigrants to be born in Canada, and won't be the last either, if Canadians want to take in these people and they are ok with it and have the resources, good on them.

Yes, because the population of Gaza is 1.5 percent the size of Ukraine's. Canada's program is relatively generous to the Gazans despite your anti-white rhetoric, as well as to other POCs, who make up the vast majority of Canada's immigrants and refugees, who numbers recently have been immense.

You live in Japan? Tell us about your country's generosity.

Reality check: Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, removing some Jewish settlements that had been there for centuries. Since then, Gaza has been 100% free of Jews. Talk about ethnic cleansing... And Gaza has a border with Egypt as well as with Israel. The problem in Gaza is the Hamas dictatorship, and not Israel.

By using the Rafah crossing to Egypt? In what world is that controlled by Israel?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Sure, let them come. Since they are used to living in tents it shouldn't be a problem since Canada has no houses for them to live in. Regardless, the Canadian government and citizens will learn why Egypt, Jordan or other Arab neighbors of Israel don't want Palestinians coming there...because Israel doesn't let them back in! Soon the Canadian government will learn this and be an active participant in the Ethnic Cleansing of Gaza.

Huh? Canada is a country of immigrants who have been taking in refugees for decades. Why would they suddenly feel the way you say now when they never have?

Canada is a wonderful country because of it's immigrants. The descendants of some of those groups who came here generations ago as refugees are the most loyal and proud Canadians. There isn't any reason why Palestinians who come here would be any different.

Why did those Gazans living in Canada give up occupying Gaza in the first place anyway?

You must have missed it, there's a bit of an incident going on over there right now. It's been in the news a bit.
