But people seem to think it does depending on the topic and the era. We have gone from gay bashing to protecting gays from all criticism, from one brand of stupid to another.

No one can say how much or how little his sexual preferences had to do with his crime. But it does seem that if he were hetero, his victim would have been a woman. This was a lover he carved up after all. Beyond that, who can really tell what is related to what?

If he were Japanese, his nationality would be called into question. But he is Canadian and North American, so nothing about it.
