Good.
The Blue Shield needs to be retired.

A full clip is quite excessive, but the teen was also hopped up on drugs. This is a case where 2 wrongs don't make a right. First the teen shouldn't have been carrying any weapon, but since he was under the influence he couldn't comprehend his surroundings properly. Second the police officer shouldn't have kept shooting once the suspect fell to the ground. The man kept firing until the suspect completely stopped moving (aka was dead).
More stupid choices that lead up to worse stupid situations.

So it's OK to kill him, then? Shame on you.
The video shows that the young man was no threat police at all:

THIS Blue Shield needs procecution. Blue Shields keep us safe otherwise.
On drugs or not a well placed shot in the upper leg would stop him. 4.6 meters away and walking away is no need to shoot. With a knife no matter what size can be deadly and a subdue method for fleeing thugs other than bullets would be ideal.

All those cops on the scene and NONE of them render assistance. Just another clue into the mentality of American cops.
This is pretty freaking far from an isolated incident. I am amazed anyone can come out defending American cops in general. I am amazed people can claim Muslims are such a problem in America what with all the police brutality and killings going on.

Exactly.

Let's face it folks. We are beginning to look less and less like the America that we learned about in American History and Citizenship classes. We are looking more like the authoritarian, police-state countries that we were taught to abhor throughout our history.

There is absolutely no justification whatsoever for shooting McDonald 16 times, and even the very first shot is highly questionable, considering the kid was carrying a mere 3-inch pocketknife (no, not a switchblade) and was actively trying to avoid contact with the police on the scene. Regardless of whether or not the kid was under the influence of some sustance, he was clearly not a threat to anyone when he was gunned down.
McDonald could have been brought down by any number of non-lethal means, and yet, inexplicably, Van Dyke opted not only to shoot him, but then to also make sure the boy was dead by pumping 15 more rounds into his prone body.
That's depraved, sadistic murder at the very least and Van Dyke deserves to be imprisoned for the remainder of his natural life.
What I find even more disturbing is that it took Illinois authorities over a year to reach a conculsion that most intelligent people could make within moments of seeing the video. It is clearly apparent from just one viewing that something was terribly, terribly wrong about the shooting and Illinois law-enforcement was looking for some way -- any way -- to spin it into something less terrible than it actually was.

I agree that it may be a bit excessive with that many shots, but I suggest one does a Google search and look at all of the cases of people zoned out on drugs and the crazy things that they do and how hard it is to stop them. One that comes to mind is the case of a FL man who bit off the face of a person while high on drugs.
In Chicago, from 2008-2014 there were an average of 17 fatal shootings by police each year, according to data from the Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates police misconduct. Almost all shootings, fatal and non-fatal, are found to be justified.
This year alone, there have been 435 homicides in Chicago. of these about 288 victims (from late summer data) were Black males killed by other Black males. Before the protests begin, I hope that they rioters address this issue first and the politicians and all of the rest address this also before jumping on this cop.

I hope this former police officer enjoys his time in prison. Ought to be plenty of time to find out what ACTUALLY fearing for one's life means.

Cry me a river while demolishing the dam. I never said it was "ok to kill him". But I will say, "No criminal acts being done equals no legal interference from law enforcement".
You forget I grew up in those "bad neighborhoods" with those white cops (and Hispanic, and Black, and gasp female officers). As far as I'm concerned, break da law, and law enforcement will be on you. Act suspiciously, and law enforcement will be on you. This is the same game I've been watching since I was 6 years old.
Yes this teen didn't deserve to be shot, but it's ridiculously hard for a police officer to find a reason to give him attention if he wasn't doing something wrong in the first place. Hence why 2 wrongs don't make a right. You can bleed your heart out elsewhere.
nath
It turned out he wasn't high on drugs.
SenseNotSoCommon
This was explicitly illegal interference from law enforcement: judge, jury and executioner, for acts of vandalism.
And I didn't, or I wouldn't hold life so sacred. Is that your inference?
Thank you. No more questions.

I hope this cop is found guilty and goes to prison with no chance of parole.
DaDude
The cop needs to get a swift sentence or else all hell will break loose in Chicago. From January 1st until now there has been 2,712 shooting victims in Chicago. 25 this month alone have been killed by gun violence in Chicago which includes a newborn and a 9 year old. Before a riot happens, I wish people would realize what the biggest problem in Chicago is.
skinnee
Be brave. Expose who is doing all the killing.

If you're alluding to the problem being the police, I have to respectfully disagree. There are lot of contributing factors to high rates of violence in Chicago, or any developed urban area, and the police seeming to have a predisposition for shooting first and calming things down later is certainly an issue. But gaping economic disparities between the wealthiest areas of Chicago and the poorest communities have far more to do with crime in Chicago than heavy-handed or even murderous policing. Economics factor into virtually any type of crime one can imagine that doesn't involve mental health issues.
