"looting"
Every time I hear about an earthquake somewhere I hear about looting. It seems there are bad people everywhere...
LostinNagoya
People loot food, remember TV reporters being asked desperately for water in Haiti. But the boundary between looting food and a brand new 52" TV is thin, I guess.

Yeah Sarge it seems looting follows these catastrophes, however, I don't remember one report of looting following the Kobe quake.

I don't remember one report of looting following the Kobe quake." Really?
But the boundary between looting food and a brand new 52" TV is thin" Especially when there is no electricity to run it.

I was in the Kobe quake. I was in Suma ward, not the worst hit area, but it was pretty bad. I never once feared my fellow man in the ordeal that followed. I heard no reports of looting at all. There are a lot of bad things one can say about Japan (including the government's inept response to the quake) but it has to be admitted that (at least back in '95) people didn't loot and there wasn't a lot of crime.

I believe looting generally occurs in areas where there is a high population of people living in poverty. Maybe there are people who loot food, but others loot for something to sell, maybe to buy food. Hard to judge them as they aren't in the best of circumstances.

The cruel reality is, poorer the country, the more casualties there are during natural disasters. By this measurement compared to Haiti, it's a miracle that Chile did not incur higher number of casualties.

Yeah, it's true looting wasn't a problem during the Kobe quake. In fact people helped each other out. However, looting was a huge problem after Katrina in America. Makes you wonder ...

looting and stealing happen here but no comparison to other countries at all. I leave my gear and wallet on the beach while surfing and not a prob at all.

Looting and stealing in Concepcion is a problem of some bad people, not from quake or hungry 24 h after quake. The markets (Lider and other) closed 48 h after only by no electric power and not sell food.

Aren't there countries where looters are shot at with guns, rather than water canons? The former is a bit more effective.
Actually, wasn't this earthquake reportedly over 60 times stronger than the one in Haiti? A bit surprised more didn't perish in Chile.
I didn't hear about any problems with looting after the Sichuan earthquake either, despite what Ishihara wants you to think.

low population density. according to wiki, the city had 292,589 people (2006).
LostinNagoya
It was 900 times more powerful than the one in Haiti. It was the 5th strongest in history.

OK, If you just look at only Concepción city, if you look for the whole province of Concepcion it counts as 1004563 people. Talca province is about 407563, Santiago is 6 million.(source: National Statistics Institute of Chile)
The death toll is low for now, but the reported damnified people is more than two million in the central and south regions of Chile.
LostinNagoya: The magnitude is 8.8 (Chile) vs 7 in Haiti I cannot see why is 900 times more powerful
LostinNagoya
I heard the 900 times thing on TV. I don't know how the scale works, but an expert was telling that it actually was that powerful. However, the depth and the way the ground shakes - up or down or to the sides, or a combination of them - makes the huge difference, even if in the scale the numbers are close. PS. I may be corrected on this.

the middle ground (b/w chile's quake power & haiti's pop. density) would be sichuan, china's 2008 quake. high population density and 8.0 magnitude quake.
