Why must it happen? Just "because?" Taiwan was established to get away from the communists.

Beijing has been self-ruled, but its sovereignty is denied by Taiwan!

Fixed the glitch.

I really don’t think Taiwanese believe CCP after you see what they have done to Tibet, Mongolia, The Muslim West, and HongKong.

Must be trouble on the home front. Xi's ramping up the nationalism to deflect attention from the impending economic troubles in his phoney economy.

33 ( +37 / -4 )

Dude, just get over it.

27 ( +29 / -2 )

China has to snuff out and stomp out these democracies before they flourish. China can’t stand to see people thinking for themselves.

28 ( +29 / -1 )

If more women ruled in politics, there would be fewer wars. Just a bunch of countries not talking to each other, which is perfectly fine by me.

-12 ( +8 / -20 )

Xi, tell your story walking.

Taiwan will NEVER unify with your sick, decaying Communist nation. Taiwan is a peace and freedom-loving nation, the complete opposite of China. The two could not be more different.

Now its up to The West to show some spine - starting with USA - and formally recognize Taiwan diplomatically. Over to you, Pres. Biden.

These Dictators. Must and will all they want about reuniting. It won't happen, war is a better option. The population are mostly 4 or 5 generation Taiwanese. the last 4 seeing nothing but aggression from China and seeing no future relationship nor ancestral with China. Majority of export and finance will go elsewhere out of China quick smart and set up business in India, Africa and South America. Xi seem to forget that it is western money that they prosper off and war will end that western money.

Maybe it'll happen when China will be freed from dictatorship

Abraham Lincoln once said the cession of the South must be prevented by all means, even at the cost of slavery liberation. Can the China-Taiwan relation be construed in exactly the same context?

Taiwan is recognized as part of China in all but a handful of small or tiny countries. In a perfect world, Taiwan people would have the right to decide themselves but only someone moronic enough to say free speech exists anywhere would believe the right to self-determination exists.

In a conventional war between China and USA over Taiwan, USA would be given a monumental blood-letting which is what makes it so alarming. Unlike Russia, those crazed fascists refuse to rule out the first strike use of nukes. USA nuking China making Japan uninhabitable for several 1000 years is a very real possibility. It's not even that USA is ruled by crazed fascists but the inexorable tendency of capitalist economy.

No way! Xi Jinping AKA Winnie the Pooh needs to accept that Taiwan is an independent country.

Taiwan has its own government, military, laws, electoral system, border controls and currency. Therefore it is a country.

If more women ruled in politics, there would be fewer wars. Just a bunch of countries not talking to each other, which is perfectly fine by me.

If capitalism was already consigned to the dustbin of history, there would be no rulers and no countries, just a bunch of people cooperating to make the lives of themselves and everyone else better.

What we have here is Xi mark 2.

He realizes his big mouth has caused much harm to his reputation and now he is playing good cop.

Take his charm with a grain of salt, he is a but a well dressed monster.

Smells suspiciously like Communism.

No thanks. I'll take capitalism, freedom and democracy.

like an ex who has turned stalkerish because you've moved on....

That was the absolute best analogy of all time! Perfect, couldn’t agree more.

12 ( +15 / -3 )

It may happen in the future, but not in a way Xi expects:

China will have to become a democratic government first

i think there is a lot of truth to this statement. Xi has realized that the world has turned against him, but face is such an overriding concept in china that Xi cant just get up and say "ehh, you know what, the taiwan juice aint gunna be worth the squeeze" and back down. so the rhetoric will continue for the domestic audience, but it will likely be just a little more sugarcoated than in the past

8 ( +9 / -1 )

I'll take capitalism, freedom and democracy.

Capitalism and democracy are contradictory. As for "freedom", I'm sureprised anyone over the age of 15 takes it seriously. Freedom for who and to do what?

-15 ( +3 / -18 )

Apart from the fact that Jinping Xi can not be trusted to be truthful or honest, China has it within it's power to ensure peaceful reunification of Taiwan and mainland China by ending the CCP and instituting a multi party democracy.

Jinping is neither smart enough or brave enough to end CCP rule. History will judge the CCP harshly as it does the Nazi's and other dictators that came before.

Do not fall for China's encouraging words, it should be judged only by it's actions. If it continues to intimidate others, it proves it's words to be false.

19 ( +21 / -2 )

He must keep saying it or he will look weak and everyone will laugh at him!!!

10 ( +11 / -1 )

The only reason this will happen peacefully or forcefully is because Biden will not back Taiwan. The world knows he turned his back on France, Afghanistan, and America and he will just stand by and watch everything crumble around him.

-11 ( +3 / -14 )

Reminds me of the other guy claiming ownership over the Rhineland. It took a lot to put that rabid dog down. I have no faith in the Biden administration to do anything but pull a Neville Chamberlain.

-9 ( +5 / -14 )

Chinese leader Xi Jinping said on Saturday reunification with Taiwan must happen and will happen peacefully,

Peacefully? Great! Prove it by denouncing before the whole world that China will absolutely nlt use military force against Taiwan. Otherwise, it's just another Chinese lie.

Former Australian deputy-PM interviews Niall Ferguson with some interesting insights on the international situation regarding China and Taiwan, and why Xi could be behaving like he is.

Verbal threats with lots of military jets flying provocatively close. Well Pooh, you really are stirring the pot hard on this one. Is there trouble brewing at home and you need to drum up support? Or is it you just need a diversion? Remember don't go too hard. You don't want to lose those foreign markets because that's where the honey comes from. And of course there's Olympics to think about too. You'll want all your friends there smiling with you.

PS. Putin will be there but he never smiles, and Kim is too afraid of Covid to come.

Where was the so-called "democracy-loving West" when Crimea needed help ? Where was "freedom-loving West" when Yemen needed help ? Where was "justice-loving West" when Kashogi needed help ? I can go on and on.

Anyone in Taiwan would be wise to not rely on the US or its ally to "help" when they really needed help. They've lost their spine, the capitalist corporations sold them to anyone willing to bid, China, Russia, Saudis, or whoever.

Enjoy this time of relative peace while you can.

Too bad Xi doesn't read comments here on JT, he would be so ashamed of himself..

2 ( +7 / -5 )

It might happen if Washingjing , the EU , UK , OZ and Tokyojing insists on not giving diplomatic recognition to TW-ROC !

By doin such a da-kine dastardly act all of the above so-called democracies automatically became members of the Beijington Gang!

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Even if they don’t want to reunify? Be afraid Taiwan. If they strike, they’ll do it quickly before the us or NATO can do anything, similar to how Russia annexed large parts of the Ukraine.

I have no problem with having nuclear capability to deter China..

2 ( +3 / -1 )

I don't believe Kishida-san will agree to this unification. Reunification? I think enough time has passed that the "re" is now inapplicable. Also, it seems the unification with Tibet has not made them very happy, so why not focus on that first and then move onto to other unifications?

Imagine if the world actually went to war for these childish demands. Ask Taiwan mate. If they are not into you, I know it hurts, but you’ll get over it move on and find people to work with you that wanna work with ya. Believe in yourselves. No need for coercion if you have the goods. Just like in business everywhere in the world, the Chinese people naturally thrive. How do you force anyone to do anything anyway without looking like a douche?

If you did decided to move on Mr Xi, there would be instant international respect and legitimacy to your claims of being about peace and stability. Imagine if Taiwan got a pass! How cool would that be, Cool China. It’s not even a loss, it’s a huge win.

tanomuzo!

Abraham Lincoln once said the cession of the South must be prevented by all means, even at the cost of slavery liberation. Can the China-Taiwan relation be construed in exactly the same context?

It's a valid question. The views on secession of today's US leaders and leaders of other major powers is not clear. Would the US allow California or Texas to secede if their residents voted to do so? There was little criticism of Spain when it took steps to prevent a referendum on Catalonian independence. The UK's Johnson has said he would not agree to a referendum on Scottish independence, even if the Scottish government chose to hold one. And in the case of Crimea, there was strong criticism of Russia "annexing" of Crimea, but I don't recall any world leaders saying it should be up to the people of Crimea.

Article 1 of the UN Charter includes this part: "To develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples"

I'd like to hear more world leaders strongly pointing this out to China, and telling them plainly that it's up to the people of Taiwan. Then see how China reacts.

Give up Taiwan and you’ll be handing over Okinawa next…they said that crap before too

All examples given have nothing to do with Taiwan's position, that it has had its functioning independence for the past 72 years and has never been under CCP control.

Taiwan cannot consider secession as it is not a part of CCP China. It would need to be under CCP control before it could consider secession. But being under CCP control there would be no leaders in Taiwan to talk about it let alone carry it out. They would all be eliminated by the CCP.

China trying to shut the door decades after the horse has bolted. Wise up Jinping. Taiwan is gone and is not part of your china, never has been.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

So what is the answer? Imperialism gone. Fascism gone. Communism we thought was gone. It’s not the Russian or US oligarchs with a democracy smoke screen. Liberalism is being challenged again.

Abraham Lincoln once said the cession of the South must be prevented by all means...

Lincoln was a tyrant no better than Xi. The south had every right to secede just as the original 13 colonies seceded. Power, control and money are performing an age-old dance.

There's a new Chinese-German restaurant in the heart of Beijing that is proving to be very popular with CCP members. An hour after they eat and leave, the customers become hungry... for power.

This guy is a disease.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Same old same old from Winnie the Pooh, slightly sugar coated for the international audience an still rabidly nationalistic for the internal audience.

China’s economy is facing major difficulties that could result in a spectacular melt down and unprecedented discontent from the population and the prospect of the CCP losing its grip on power unless they contain it, so how do dictatorships always distract the populace? Yep invent a foreign threat/invade someone else. Same playbook the Argentine Junta used.
