China's Xi: No reason to change Hong Kong's 'one country, two systems' formula

HK was one of the best destinations on earth, until this guy took over.

China could never allow Hong Kong to have all these freedoms while the entire Chinese population watched on because they would start demanding the same, it was naive to think otherwise.

What a joke. It is already one country, one system.

14 ( +18 / -4 )

Yes as above it’s not two systems it’s now one enforced system, assimilate or disappear model.( Like those Star Treck dudes the Borg) their is no option. Résistance is futile. Smile or be prosecuted in our secret courts. Be happy.

I watched this on TV w/ the sound off (I had a meeting). That was some surreal $&$#.

Emperor Xi and his supplicant vassals. The Flags EVERYWHERE. the Cops EVERYWHERE.

I notice that Xi didn't really mix with the locals by which I mean they were well cordoned off out of camera or fruit throwing range.

There was a time when I thought it would be nice to live in HK and once upon a time it might have been so, but I wouldn't live there now for all the tea in China as the man says.

Anyone there that can still get out should get out NOW. It's only going to get worse.

Two systems?

10 ( +13 / -3 )

Or: Xi: If it's broke, decree it's not broke.

10 ( +10 / -0 )

A clear and perfect example of ‘lying through your teeth’.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

Xi: If it's broke, why fix it?

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Xi: One tongue, two forks.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Xi has already changed it. What is he talking about?

7 ( +9 / -2 )

For ordinary workers and citizens of Hong Kong, their lives may not be affected much so long as they do not raise voices against their government. However, mental stresses living under the authoritarian rulings may not be comfortable for them. That matters us a lot who are living in democratic countries.

HK was a huge financial asset to Beijing, before Xi destroyed it.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Another big Orwellian lie.

War is peace.

Freedom is slavery.

And of course, the CCP are your friends, they established the utopia that Marx predicted back in the 19th century.

Maybe that's why so many HKers were making an exodus from there as far back as 1987, you figure?

7 ( +7 / -0 )

bit late for that bud

6 ( +8 / -2 )

One Country, Two Systems must be a private joke that Xi tells his friends in Beijing. Of course Xi would say nothing in HK needs to change because that other system is now also called - Do what Pooh says/wants or go to jail!

6 ( +8 / -2 )

HK was a huge financial asset to Beijing, before Xi destroyed it.

They'd prefer Shenzen to be everything HK was. Will be interesting to see how HK does once the CCP loses the excuse of the virus.

My guess is a continued exodus of their highly educated professional class to London, Singapore etc., and the CCP will be just fine with this. They'd prefer an impoverished HK to a vibrant sore.

It's an absolute tragedy really, HK was one of the most interesting and improbable places I'd ever visited, a real gem.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

No reason to change it, because it has already been changed, right in front of the international community.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

As usual, the CCP speaks with a forked tongue.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

China breached its covenant with Britain to maintain a one government two systems Hong Kong. The Geo political question is “what can Britain do about it ?” When China commences it’s attack on Taiwan and the world responds in Taiwan’s defense and defeats China. Can Britain repossess Hong Kong? And the bigger question is “does Tibet regain its sovereignty and do the Uighurs become a free people?”

5 ( +6 / -1 )

The same with Shanghai. The most advanced city in China, the financial capitol of China, and the true 1st tier international city on the mainland.

Then for the CCP to corral the city into complete compliance with the CCP and Xi's cult of personality they locked the city down with the zero Covid bull poop to bring those uppity Shanghai folk to their knees in compliance.

How come Xi is not up to speed with what’s been happening in HK?

3 ( +5 / -2 )

The "two systems" arrangement is already history (and in the can); from now on it's "The Two-Systems Problem", a mere fantasy, no more real than the best-selling Chinese SF "The Three-Body Problem, but nobody is buying this one from Xi. The only comfort is that he and his buddies won't be around forever or even much longer and the Hong Kongers can wait patiently for that happy day.

"China breached its covenant with Britain"

You mean British invasion and colonization of Hong Kong and the opium wars it started.

No, handing the territory back to China. Something I doubt the Japanese government would ever want to do under similar circumstances.

What a joke. It's already one country one system

Its not one country one system

Taiwan and Macau and Hong Kong all have different systems !

Macau and Hong Kong run exactly how the CCP tells them to run.

Iam dissapointed in you Peter that you don't understand that yet.

While I am disappointed in you Kyo wa heiwa dayo ne, for not understanding that Taiwan is not part of CCP China, it is it's own democratic nation fully removed from the mainland, and that the CCP changed the two systems that was in operation by introducing new laws that over ride and ignore the international treaty China signed with the UK in good faith.

Some posters continue to post Chinese propaganda that ignores truth and reality and inserting CCP fantasy.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

This is obvious, as the Chinese government obviously has the right to make changes, and it wouldn't make sense to try and "hide" these from the international community.

And therefore you accept Xi is lying, since he is saying there is no need to change something while you accept they did, completely, even when say say they would not do it.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

faulty conclusion, and a miscomprehension of a basically written comment, and further, with no evidence to back the fallacious reasoning..

Since you fail to say where it is faulty the only logical conclusion is that there is no problem with it. The evidence is quoted.

You said China already did something they have said they would not do, and that it would not have reason to do. So you are saying they are lying. Where is the problem with that? can you formulate an argument to prove it?

For a long time, Taiwan itself was under a dictatorship pushing this notion of themselves being the only government of all China and not being independent. I had a GF in college who was Taiwanese, and she didn't believe that malarky, nor that from the CCP. Now Taiwan is democratic, but do they still propagate that nonsense?

There is no reason to change Hong Kong's "one country, two systems" formula of governance, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on a rare visit to the global financial hub after swearing in the city's new leader, John Lee, on Friday.

Gotta admit that Hong Kong has come a long way after being handed over back to China from the UK.

No reason to change it, because it has already been changed, right in front of the international community.

This is obvious, as the Chinese government obviously has the right to make changes, and it wouldn't make sense to try and "hide" these from the international community.

Hong kong is doing very fine after "Martin Lee", "Jimmy Lai" and their collaborators in jail to an indefinite period!
