China would like to bring "peace" by ceasing hostilities with Russia keeping everything they have taken. Sorry but not buying it.
Blacklabel
So what’s the alternative when Ukraine cant win even with 100 billion dollars of support?
negotiate now in a not so bad position or give up later in a much worse one?
TaiwanIsNotChina
I take it jets and missiles going into Ukraine would be acceptable for Russia in these negotiations? If not, I don't see why Ukraine would agree to a pause in hostilities so Russia can rearm and steal some more.
Fredrik
So, exactly how is a peace deal possible now with the ICC accusations? It would be interesting to see those "actionable proposals".
TaiwanIsNotChina
Xi should think twice about being seen with Indicted War Criminal Putin (IWCP). There really is no pretending that China is only about peace when that happens. He should also visit Kiev to be fair.
BertieWooster
Interesting. Again, China goes for peace, while the U.S.A. and their puppets say it with tanks, planes and missiles.
geronimo2006
Wrong BertieWooster. Don't imagine for a moment China has suddenly become peace loving. They are not. Xi sees this as an opportunity for China to gain. He wants to see Putin survive so Russia will continue to sell China cheap oil and tech with which he can build up China's economic and military strength for it's own aims, which are not peaceful if you live in Taiwan.
Madverts
The Chinese dictatorship clearly supports mad vlads barbaic invasion, Bertie old chap. No getting away from that one.

Just like during WWII when Italy's Mussolini tried to be the peacemaker / negotiator between England and Germany. Of course, Mussolini was on Hitler's side just as Xi is on Putin's side, so it's very much an unbalanced peace negotiation to begin with. Besides, here's China debating whether to send arms to Russia, not Ukraine, just Russia, so it's obvious who's side China's on.
History repeating itself?
itsonlyrocknroll
The only to route peace/ceasefire will require all Russian forces to withdraw from Ukraine to be replaced with a multi nation UN peacekeeping force followed by the implementation of a buffer zone,
The government of China published 12-point position paper on the war in Ukraine would represent the close to total surrender of Ukraine sovereign territory to a murderous invader and perpetrator of atrocities/war crimes against whole families, people of Ukraine.
The government of China agenda is duplicitous deceit, to prolong this heinous invasion to aid Putin dictatorship, then to supply lethal aid for energy.
wallace
Putin has the power to call an immediate ceasefire.
elephant200
China's definition of peace is very different. China believed fighting fire with fire.
Also Chairman XI is very grateful Russia providing all kinds of energy to China including: Oil, Coal, LPG and the Enriched Uranium !
itsonlyrocknroll
There no winners, only cenotaphs to commemorate and reflect the pain and suffering, sacrifice given to protect freedoms.
Putin's Russin forces must be expelled never to return.

What makes you think they'll be in a worse position later? I'd say taking Kharkiv, Kherson, and areas north of Kyiv prove just the opposite to be true.
Ah yes Bertie, China goes for peace by supplying drones and ammunition to Russia.

I'm not really seeing the need of this visit unless there is a major peace initiative. It's bad timing for Xi unless there's something else in the works that we don't know about.

Europe media has reported every conspiracy theory over the alleged sabotage of Nord stream.
Planes, boats, submarines, and everything from/to lock, stock and two smoking barrels.
The requirement that a mediator, has to respect international law, it base principals.
The UN human rights charter......
https://www.ohchr.org/en/universal-declaration-of-human-rights
Mediators must represent independence also the ICJ Involvement, also agree without fear or favour ICJ jurisdiction and rule.
Be frank could either the Government of China or Russia accede?
No I don't believe so
Peter14
Unless he can get Russia to retreat to its recognized borders, he has nothing. The only acceptable peace is Ukraine retaining full sovereignty over all of its territory, and retaining the sovereign right to free association by applying to join the EU and or NATO if it so wishes. That does not guarantee Ukraine membership in either, but they have the right to ask.
Perhaps as Russia's friend without limits, China might offer to pay all reparations on behalf of Russia for the destruction it has caused in Ukraine.
And maybe China can convince Russia to hand over those guilty of war crimes with the exception of Putin, in order to get his support. And for Ukraine to hand over those found guilty of committing war crimes against Russian forces during the conflict so that a fair outcome can be sought for all victims.
Blacklabel
where is Putin right now?
Mark
China is the ONLY wild card in this game and the only super power that can put an end to this war, let us hope that cool heads will prevail and end this tragedy. Give Peace a Chance.
Peter14
Reports had him visiting occupied Ukraine, but he is likely back in Russia by now. His invasion forces have been attempting to gain ground in Eastern Ukraine for months, with dismal results. If they are smart they are preparing defense in depth for the coming Ukraine offensive. If not the route they face will be bigger than they imagine. Nobody knows Ukraine like the locals do, so their plans will be to take advantage of their knowledge and Russian lack of local knowledge.
Much will depend on the result of the Ukraine push in summer as to just how much worse off Russia will be. It may be as dismal as Russia's spring offensive, or it may force another humiliating Russian retreat.
elephant200
America sanctioning China by trade, America threatened China with navy and airpower at heat points: Taiwan Strait,Korean peninsula,South China Sea,America providing nuclear submarines and deployment of bombers in that country......etc.
And someone thinks Chinese leaders will asking Mr.Putin to stop that 1 year old Ukraine war for the sake of your bloody hypocritic "Rule base world order"? The Chinese shall never cares or concerns if Putin wars expanding to a larger one. The progress of the Russian offensive was too low and disappointed, that was the Chinese perspective!
Blacklabel
NATO destroying themselves. 100s of billions of dollars they should have spent on collective defense.
instead of given to a non NATO member that more than 1 year later is “occupied” so heavily to the point Putin is walking around in their country 1 year later.
what money and what weapons does NATO have left for themselves if this continues?
Yrral
Peter14,it will be a cold day in hell, before the US Senate ratify Ukraine to NATO,
wallace
The money given to Ukraine does not affect the NATO commitment of each member country. to spend 2.5% of GDP on defense by 2025.
Yrral
With the arrest warrant for Putin, this is a fight to the death,by all involved,we entered the point of no return
Yrral
Wallace, the US is only country that Russian fear, your country England is on the verge of financial and social collapse and France along with them

Good point, Black. Did you know Hitler, for example, visited Paris the day after the armistice was signed. Paris is very much part of France, now isn't it? Putin visiting Crimea, doesn't mean they'll be there forever. If you had your way, however, you'd certainly like to force Ukraine to do so.
lol Yes. NATO is very clearly destroying itself.
lol What money? The US and Europe have plenty of money. $50+ trillion in GDP between the countries supporting Ukraine. Money isn't an issue.

As students of the English language, we often watched CNN news that our teachers used for listening practice. There was always "peace in the Middle East" that you hear over and over. This was twenty some years ago at Camp David Summit. Looking back, the outcome of US policies is basically arms sales, war, and increasing likelihood of war. If you want global influence, you will need to solve global challenges. Let's see if China can score two in a row.
Kyiv should be used, to be fair.
I'm more optimistic, not because China has power and influence but becaus I don't think Xi travels unless it's almost a done deal. If Iran and Saudi Arabia were meeting all the way in Bejiing, there had to been a good chance. Of course 2000 Camp David Summit, with a smiling Bill Clinton in the middle, ended without an agreement.
Blacklabel
For you posting on the internet its not.
that money belongs to the taxpayers of those countries for the use of their citizens.
or have we left the billions and Ukraine cab have a trillion dollars now? How bout a gazillion?
Cards fan
Nor is it for the US and EU. The US, for example spends more than $800 billion a year on military. We've got more than enough money to help. You just don't want them to get help, and this is a convenient excuse to do nothing.
TaiwanIsNotChina
China owns exactly none of these things by law, so this can be disregarded.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Since Russia is doing its best impression of the animal it is often compared to, it is difficult to say, but I imagine having their military crap out against No. 40 on the military expenditure list means Russia at least respects the US' capabilities, even if they won't admit it. Even the lowest estimates place Russian casualties greater than the Middle East wars and we're not even a year and half in. The wailing Russian mothers don't lie.
RichardPearce
China's proposals have actually aligned pretty well with international law, human rights laws, and even things that the American government has officially agreed to TWICE (the first attempt at putting a diplomatic end to the civil war in Ukraine started by the violent coup against the newly reelected President, the Minsk Treaty, and the second attempt UNSC resolution 2202)
That logically makes them a neutral moderator, even if those who are providing weapons and ammunition to the side so flagrantly violating the terms of those agreements claim otherwise.
They are also a country that holds a big ECONOMIC stick over all the present participants in the civil war (the US, EU, Russia and Ukraine, which makes them likely the only effective neutral moderator.
TaiwanIsNotChina
That would be true until the second they start sending drones and artillery shells to Russia, which has already happened, so really no leg left for China to stand on as it is.
1.) China ain't that powerful. Cutting off western consumers would hurt them as much as western sanctions. 2.) No one is going to leverage Ukraine to the negotiating table when their land is at stake. 3.) the US and EU will tell China to take a hike until Xi visits Kiev 4.) you don't need someone with leverage to be the moderator. The one positive way China could use its leverage is to bring their dog Russia to heel and send them to the negotiating table after withdrawing.

That “indictment” from the hypocrite kangaroo court is a joke.

If Xi can convince Putin to abandon his war of aggression, then he deserves our praise.
UChosePoorly
If Xi can somehow convince Russia to pull all their forces back past the 2013 borders of Ukraine, pay for damages, return the deported Ukrainians, and help bring their war criminals to justice, then I am on Team Xi.

Destroyer of the world peace now seems interested in becoming a peacemaker in Ukraine strange.. Then Xinping will be needing a peacemaker for Taiwan..LOL
