Time to push back on them hard, china needs to understand it cannot just bully its way around the pacific and the world without facing the consequences. Taiwan has allies.

12 ( +25 / -13 )

Absolutely, right. China need to understand that only the US is allowed to bully its way around the world.

It is time China stopped trying to emulate the US.

-5 ( +19 / -24 )

The best and most hurting way to punish China is to damage its economy.

The world have to let China pay for all its bullying and giving the Corona Virus to the world, by giving a hard damage to their economy!

Back off Commies, and leave the peace-loving Taiwanese alone. The world is on democratic Taiwans side, and if push comes to shove, Communist China will be crushed under a ton of bricks.

Time for Japan, Taiwan and the US to ramp up huge exercises in the region. Let the Commies know that the democratic free nations will no longer stand for her constant bullying.

The only way to stand up to bullies is to outsource all production to them and support as many of their cheap factories as you can!

I have several Taiwanese friends and business acquaintances. I can only say from their perspective they are an independent nation and just want to be left to carry on with their life, business, etc. Taiwan is not nor have they ever been an aggressive nation. One of the better major manufacturers (Taiwan Semiconductor - TSMC) has been a world leader for more than a decade now.

Taiwan has its own currency and borders and is in some ways more advanced than the PRC.

On the other hand, it is a travesty the way Taiwan has been treated during Covid-19 (in spite of their world leading handling of the virus), especially the way Taiwan was treated by Dr. Bruce Aylward of the WHO.

https://twitter.com/HKWORLDCITY/status/1243865641448169474?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1244076656353935361%7Ctwgr%5Eshare_3&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theguardian.com%2Fworld%2F2020%2Fmar%2F30%2Fsenior-who-adviser-appears-to-dodge-question-on-taiwans-covid-19-response

This makes me fear that Taiwan's fate has already been decided. I hope not....

China does not have a lot of friends, and those that it does are paid for: when the money dries up, so does the loyalty. And they know this. I don't expect any radical actions by the PRC anytime soon as they themselves are aware they are unsustainable - unless they want to see Manchuria, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, ,Tibet, and southeastern China make their dash for freedom.

22 ( +25 / -3 )

China is taking advantage of the global pandemic chaos to break the status quo on various issues.

Taiwan needs to apply for UN membership as an independent sovereign nation and the UN should support them. Any attempt by China should be stopped by a UN Command consisting of basically the whole world.

19 ( +24 / -5 )

The CCP knows that right now they would not win a shooting war, so the world should push back on the CCP before it is too late. Right now it is just saber rattling.

True. But the CCP knows that if Trump loses in the next election, things will rapidly go back to the "good old days" with complete deference to and dependence on production in China in exchange for profits for Big Capital. So don´t count them out yet.

That's why it's imperative that Trump wins. I don't care what you think about him, he's the only one in D.C. willing to push back against China.

China has already bought Biden through Hunter.

The world stands with you, Taiwan, against Chinese aggression!

EXACTLY. The other big reason for me is: no more stupid military interventions abroad.

All the domestics stuff the partisans squabble over is really not relevant afaic.

-3 ( +7 / -10 )

In recent months Taiwan has reported a sharp rise in incursions by Chinese warplanes into its air defense identification zone (ADIZ).

That's probably because they are afraid of Trump.

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

China "back off" and accused it of threatening peace

Accusations nothing, they are the 1 and only cause of problems out there. Others are only interested in peace and business. China hasn't learned anything in over 2000 yrs. and soon will be sent back to ancient civilization if it is not careful. Leave Taiwan alone. Keep it simple peace and business.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

When we look back the history of China, their concern was always how to govern the large country without a civil war. Communism is the only way they found they can rule the country with power. They will not change. It is miraculous for them a big country America prospers without a civil war while giving a lot of freedom to their people. Taiwan and China cannot coexist as we see the case of Hong Kong. When democrats get power, they will take conciliatory policy to China. I support Trump in that context. Unfortunately, a sign of a civil war is seen in recent America.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

Intervening for Taiwan against China in a conflict is a military intervention. How does that escape you?

Trump is not the answer and never has been.

Not necessarily.

It matters some but the foremost problem of this century will be China.

No. Continuing to appease the CCP simply lays the groundwork for a real military conflict later on. The time to stand up to the CCP is now. And I do not see that the establishment opposition to Trump is willing to do that.

I have 2 sons in the us navy or reserves that say why is the USA messing around with the world and why not let all those regions figure it out themselves. Why does the USA need to be involved in other regions issues.

-3 ( +7 / -10 )

I don’t know of any nations that have a formal alliance with Taiwan. Who can stop China from overwhelming Taiwan in a few short weeks? No one really. The US doesn’t need any more wars. I feel badly for Taiwan right now. Things are only going to get worse for them as China’s military continues to get stronger and US influence in the region continues to decline as it has since the end of the Cold War.

As I keep harping the WEST needs to STOP feeding the Chinese MONSTER!!

We MUST start pulling investment OUT of China, stop buying the mostly garbage produced there!!

It is already going to cost us a TON, but if we dont start we will absolutely be in a full on war with China, that should be crystal clear by now!

Note as always, the issue is the commie GOVT ......NOT the Chinese people, they need to be freed.

I would hate to see the world have to unite to defeat China like it did with Germany & Japan in the 30-40s! But if it does happen at least Germany & Japan will be on the right side this time round!

14 ( +17 / -3 )

Taiwan is going to put up a good fight and there will be a lot of blood shed everywhere. the repercussions for china (even if not immediately militarily) will be immense, and they know it. taiwan no doubt has hundreds of rocket units aimed at shanghai and other urban centers to unleash havoc the moment it is attacked, and the destruction caused in such high-density cities will cause the populace to panic; china could collapse internally, and this is a greater threat to the CCP than any resistance by its 'renegade state'

8 ( +10 / -2 )

China's not showing it that much but the CCP's getting desperate.

With average salaries going up and factories leaving, the economy is slowing down.

And if it slows down too much it'll cause unemployment to rise and people will start criticising the government. They can't afford any hint of an uprising...

They're just using the old tactic of blaming other countries.

China has broken apart and joined up so many times.

The question is, when will it implode next time...?

"I call on the international community to condemn the CCP for its dangerous and provocative words and deeds threatening peace... China must back off,"

OK.

CCP - you guys suck, and are embarrassing China.

11 ( +11 / -0 )

World Unite, and defeat the aggression of the CCP now because later it will be too late. Stand tall , stand together and back each other crush this regime that is for oppression, dictatorship and mass prduction of cheap crQp !

Maybe you should explain to them what the USN fought for in WWII and how that has kept WWIII from happening for the last 75 years,

There is a lot of truth in that. China is probably at its peak right now. Their demographics are going to ensure their economy stagnates and sea level rise with inundate some of their biggest and most productive cities. If the Greenland ice cap fully melts much of Shanghai and China's other big coastal cities are under water and Beijing becomes beachfront property. Xi Jinping has no shortage of internal enemies but seems to relish picking new fights at every opportunity. Now its force labor in Tibet (on top of the horrors in Xinjiang) and at the same time stripping Mongolian language instruction from schools in Inner Mongolia leading to parents removing their children from schools, mass protests and arrests. One has to wonder how many more problems he can create for China before an internal party coup pushes him aside?

It is refreshing to hear Taiwan tell China to back off. It would be more refreshing for Taiwan to give the CCP orders. I love it.

I have 2 sons in the us navy or reserves that say why is the USA messing around with the world and why not let all those regions figure it out themselves. Why does the USA need to be involved in other regions issues.

US commerce travels the worlds oceans and the US Navy has fought battles since its inception to protect that commerce from foreign interference. The first three wars the US fought after its independence were against the Barbary Pirates to stop them from stealing US ships and imprisoning their crews if they didn't pay a "tribute" to the sultan of Tripoli for the privilege of passing through the Mediterranean Sea. The US fought two wars to defeat the Barbary Pirates and end that practice (interestingly the Swedish Navy fought alongside the US during one of the two wars) and in between the US fought the Royal Navy to end their practice of press ganging US merchant ship crews into forced servitude aboard Royal Navy ships. Today China seeks to close off the South China Sea to use by any nation but China in clear violation of international maritime law. I served the Navy in uniform and serve today as a civilian and know those waters to be international waters open to use by any nation. A good deal of US commerce passes through those waters including a lot of oil. We have every right to protect that commerce and prevent China from closing the South China Sea. If you really do have sons in the Naval Reserve and they are ignorant of that then shame on them! They don't even know why the US has a Navy.

A lot of armchair generals on this thread advocating for war with China. I trust you all will be the first to volunteer should shots be fired.

Some of us, while way too old and no longer fit enough to pass a flight physical like the old days, support them elsewhere in the organization where our accumulated knowledge becomes more important to the war fighter's success than our physical condition.

I disagree. Unlike the illegal, clumsy and confused meddling in tribal conflicts in the Middle East under the pretext of "introducing democracy", the Taiwan situation is a clear-cut case of helping a defined nation state (several actually) from being annexed by a fascist regime. And all the countries in the region (Taiwan, Phillipines, Vietnam, Malaysia) appreciate help against the CCP, as they face aggressive territorial threats from the CCP.

Didn’t take long for the cut military spending and no more war trump cheerleaders to smell blood in the water.

"I call on the international community to condemn the CCP for its dangerous and provocative words and deeds threatening peace... China must back off," he added in a tweet.

Mr Joseph Wu is indeed a foreign minister, as his colonial name implied. Constitutionally speaking China is his motherland, where and how could "China must back off" ?

When democrats get power, they will take conciliatory policy to China

Laughable. The Democratic party is populated by many first and second generation American born Chinese of Cantonese (Hong Kong) and Taiwanese ancestry. They are not going to cut China any slack. They know better than most the nature of the CCPs games and are the least likely to fall for their bovine excrement. Ten years ago you could not say China was an enemy or even an adversary in public. You couldn't do it. Big business would immediately shout you down. There was still a belief that economic engagement would temper Communism and lead to change. There was too much money at stake to anger the Chinese by calling them enemies. Engagement worked to temper the harsh military dictatorships in South Korea and Taiwan leading eventually to democratic governments, why not China too? That was then. Nobody believes that any more. I can guarantee you that Chinese treatment of Uyghurs, Hong Kong, Tibetans and now Mongolians will lead to further sanctions against China coming from both parties. Defending Taiwan is one of the most universally bipartisan and non controversial things there is in the US Congress.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Thanks to a one child policy China's demographic cliff is far worse than most other countries and this is just a matter of time. They are grasping at straws now trying to get as much as they can before they fall into the pit.

All of the developed nations of Asia face the same problem. China is actually far from the worst in terms of low fertility rates. China's neighbors like Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan have similar or lower fertility rates and never had a one child policy. It is something about working long hours at corporate jobs and living in a high rise flat in a big crowded city that deters people from marrying and having families.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

@Desert Tortoise "China is actually far from the worst in terms of low fertility rates."

Regarding fertility rates, "low birth rates" are NOT a "problem", they are a solution. If we are lucky, our genepool contains a feature which exists in many other genepools starting with bacteria. It's called "quorum sensing" and is a natural check on reproduction when individual numbers become too high to sustain the population. If we are lucky. If not, these lower rates may be just a local dip in the historical flow and our expanding population will continue on to its ultimate number...zero.

I appreciate your service, both when you were in uniform and now. That, however, does not mean all the people on this thread calling for conflict with China have or have ever had skin in the game, which was my point.

My point is that not all of us are armchair warriors. We have first hand experience, know the stakes, know what can be lost both from the losses of war and what we stand to lose if we chose to surrender and still think it worthwhile to confront China directly. The old USSR was about as belligerent as they come but we stood up to them and eventually the collapsed from within. China has no shortage of internal problems that are going to bring it down in time. The challenge is to stand up to them now and in the intermediate future while their miserable demographics and many internal disputes corrode them from within. China will not attack if they are not certain they can prevail. It is up to the west along with Japan, South Korea and Taiwan to provide a large enough military force arrayed against China combined with a credible threat to use it against them if they violate any of our sovereignty. Dictators like Xi only respect raw power. Being nice to people like Xi convinces him you are a doormat to be walked on, and he will. Look how he is imprisoning the Tibetans and now denying the Mongolians an education in their own language. They cannot fight back effectively but the US, Japan and the others can and must.
