China accuses U.S. of prejudice over Tiananmen

There is one small problem, we all saw the Chinese govt. murder its own citizens. We saw the soldiers in APCs run them down. We have first-person accounts from people who were there who witnessed infantry opening up on unarmed civilians with assault rifles.

This is why no matter how big or powerful China gets, it will not be one of us ("us" being the modern nations of the world). When the chips are down, they are prefectly willing to harrass, jail, or murder their own citizens to protect their dictatorial rule.

I watched it. I won't forget about it.

I hate it when China talks to other countries the same way it talks to it's own people.

I would totally buy this if the communists weren't yammering on "year after year" about their own neighbors. Wonder how wailing and moaning about a visit to a shrine doesn't constitute "rude interference" in the affairs of another nation. Grow up china and lose the double standard or expect to hear a LOT more about your human rights violations which continue to occur right up to this moment.

Communisim is a dirty word because it is utterly dictatorial in its governmental sphere (anyone with a repeated choice choses something else, the list of countries that have thrown communism in the puke bucket is too long to list), and laugably naive (especially in terms of incentives) in its economic incarnation.

Democracy and Capitalism are not perfect and could be improved, but both ideologies blow Communism out of the water. Need proof? The CCP has abandoned economic communism, and only holds on to political communism through the force of the internal security apparatus. The CCP is more scared of its own people than it is of any of its neighbors including the United States.

What is this "The communists", hidingout?

I identify the government of the PRC as communists first because that's how they identify themselves to the world, and second so as to make it clear that my comments refer only to the government and its minions as opposed to the unfortunate citizens forced to live under their rule.

They are about as communist in China as they are in the US or Japan. It sounds like some kind of American cold war epithet.

A truly laughable assertion. We all know that anyone holding any position of significance greater than say village postmaster is picked and confirmed by the communist party. "Elections" as they exist in the PRC have more in common with the shams Robert Mugabe pulls off than anything the rest of us in the free world would recognize. There is no opposition and the judicial and military branches of government remain firmly under control of the communist party. Movement of citizens is restricted, as is their right to free access to information and even their right to procreate. Are these the sorts of things you were thinking of when you said the communists are just like Japan?

Yeah, but America apologized, put everything out in the open, put in text books, every child in the US has to learn about slavery, so that we never again repeat the same mistakes as we did.

China isn't even close or in the same stratosphere. China is still to this day, giving house arrest to many political leaders, artists and people that often want to speak out, disappear. You can NEVER mention

Very true. I view China as if it was the 3rd Reich. Not as individuals such as Hitler, nor the racism, but the economy, the treatment of those who oppose the regime, and also in the territorial demands, there is a striking similarity. I only hope it does not end the same way.

The communists are still every bit as dangerous to their own citizens and those of neighboring countries today as they were in 1989 - perhaps more so because they now actually have some money. Human rights, environmental standards, disagreements with almost all their neighbors, censorship and propaganda, internet piracy and the general flouting of all accepted patent laws, social unrest, hoarding of minerals, total non-cooperation in their role as a Security Council permanent member ... etc. Please point out anything - even one thing - the communists should be "congratulated" on.

Sorry, this sort of argument is not allowed on JT. Attempting to point out similar transgressions in an accuser's past ( no matter how valid or apropos a comparison can be made) is "blame shifting" and "assuming the role of victim". Ask any socialist on the board, they'll tell you.

Unfortunately communism is a dirty word due to the actions of "communist" governments such as the USSR, East Germany, and more currently China and North Korea.

China's actions for the past 20 years up to current times show that they still haven't learned enough about becoming a "modern" democratic country that respects its own citizens and comprehends what freedom and basic human rights truly entails. The PRC still thinks that they have the "right" to attempt to control their people's thoughts and attitudes which is completely impossible.

Probably almost 200,000 demonstrations/protests/riots in China a year now. $125 Billion a year spent to combat their own citizens. Even Foxconn (Apple) had a good 2,000 person riot.

Lol. When will USA apologize to have attacked Iraq even if Bush lied to the entire world about the mass destruction weapons? Everyone knows it was a lie! China is far from being a perfect country, but it's not imperialist like the USA, yet.

I've read many of Gregory Clark's articles on China with interest. He's one of the few genuinely knowledgeable writers with an in-depth knowledge of the culture who writes about China with some degree of balance. I've spent around 2 years all in all in China and I wouldn't say that the topic of Tiananmen is taboo, at least not with my Chinese friends. Most of them seem to think that 'some' people were murdered at Tiananmen, but a death toll into the hundreds is exaggerated. All agree with me when I say that the murder of 'some' is unacceptable.

My assertion, hidingout, is that, whatever they might call themselves, and no matter what the method of appointment, it is not communist. It is more corporatist. I never said the "communists are just like Japan". There are a variety of political economies, not just communist and non-communist.

As to my other comment, I find it hard to understand why presenting some new information dispassionately for readers' perusal results in thumbs down. I don't particularly care but I am just curious as to the mindset of such people. I don't think that has anything to do with what you believe.

So Moonraker gets thumbed down for posting a link to an article written by someone who knows more about China than any of us here. This is not a link to an editorial from the China Daily. I don't accept ( and neither do the majority of the Chinese people I know ) that murders didn't take place, but I'm willing to at least countenance a different point of view from a respected source.
