Do as I say not as I do....

Sailing through International Waters is not a "show of force" whereas building artificial islands and claiming ownership in the face of an International Tribunal ruling it illegal is "theft".

No need to listen to hypocritical china.

China needs to sit down and take a look at the UNCLOS.

Get those warships out of the Taiwan straight, Commies. Stick to your own territory which is NOT around Taiwan.

Nobody should take any notice of what China say. They have a track record of inventing self centred narratives.

The CCP should instead wake up and acknowledge the world is better than them.

“We firmly oppose this," the ministry said

USS John S. McCain and USS Curtis Wilbur “conducted a routine Taiwan Strait transit” in accordance with international law.

So China firmly oppose a routine transit conducted in full accordance of International law. Do they prefer it to be an illegal passage? China is sending a confusing message and should read up on what is allowed under International law and then state whether it supports international laws or not.

From the sound of it's objection, China is a rouge state that opposes the following of international laws.

The Navy said the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers USS John S. McCain and USS Curtis Wilbur “conducted a routine Taiwan Strait transit” in accordance with international law.

They never follow international law, but rather they want every nation should follow Chinese law. And the world is under their feet as they bought all the politicians in most of the nations.

You support a Chinese carrier battle group sailing 12 nautical miles(22.22 km) away from Tokyo, which is all legal under international law?

The Soviets kept intelligence ships just outside the 12 mile limit from most major US naval bases and nobody ever made a big production about it. Our standing orders were to stay as far away from them as possible and leave them alone. Flying over one would get you disciplined. The Soviets sailed a battle group just outside the 12nm limit off Waikiki Beach in clear view of the resorts and beaches and the US didn't make an international incident over it. Soviet SSBNs patrolled just a few hundred miles off the US east coast. International waters mean just that.

Why not? Watch them like a hawk and keep forces ready to go on a moments notice but say nothing. That close to shore if they tried to mount an attack it would be the last thing those ships ever did. It would take them half a day's steaming or more to get far enough offshore to be out of range of most shore based weapons and air power. Plenty of time for land based air power to fly multiple sorties attacking them. By then most of their ships will be sunk. From a military standpoint there is little to be gained and much to loose from bringing your capital ships in so close to shore that everything in the world can attack them and it will take many hours to get out of range of their weapons. Maybe even position your own combat ships a couple hundred miles offshore sailing parallel to the adversary formation. No getting away if they try anything,it will be hammer and anvil time. Then clam up and say nothing. If you look at the US Navy their efforts now are to increase the stand off range of their carrier strike groups so they can stay outside the range of Chinese shore based weapons while still being able to deliver attacks.

CCP-China is under the mistaken idea that they own everything in the 80 miles (or so) between Taiwan and the mainland.

They do not.

12nm is the international navigation limit, yes?

@Desert Tortoise

The Soviets sailed a battle group just outside the 12nm limit off Waikiki Beach in clear view of the resorts and beaches and the US didn't make an international incident over it.

So you endorse a Chinese carrier battle group sailing 12 nm away from Tokyo in a show of force? To tell China to accept foreign warships sailing near China, Japan must also accept Chinese warships sailing near Tokyo.

As pointed out by other posters, In international waters all ships are granted free and unhindered passage both civilian and military. If China wants to sail 12nm from Japanese mainland that is fine. If they want to sail within 12nm of Senkaku's that is not fine. Russians sail through the English channel so why cant America sail through the Taiwan strait? Is it to show strength? Is it to show your not scared to? Is it to show off a band spanking new paint job? Who cares, its legal in any case. As another poster points out it makes them extremely vulnerable to being sunk should they take any hostile action. So they can transit peacefully, take nice pictures from outside 12nm with high zoom feature and compare it with their satellite pictures.

The more noise you make about it the more others can say it is getting to you. That is why the US doesnt say much when it happens to them. If China just shut up about it they might find the US gets tired of doing it for a reaction if none is forthcoming. But China cant shut up about it because they are trying to claim international waters as theirs so they must protest at each event or give up their illegal claims to ownership.

Who's perspective is naive? Yours or mine?

Yours is.

I think China has a point.

Time for Japan and Taiwan to defend themselves.

Do you honestly think China would support Taiwan and Japan arming to the teeth with the most modern equipment so they can tell America to go home, we can handle it now?

A very naive perspective.

China wait until January 20. After that everything will be gone smoothly as you desire.
