Prohibiting a religious practise in public schools and institutions is not "persecution" in any shape, matter or form. Words have meanings.

That pretty much sums up rich, developed nations. That's why some in those countries are rich and those countries are mostly developed. Pretty sad in many ways but the alternative of 'real' religion guiding us is even worse.

Except that a sumo wrestler is an adult and able to make up his own mind, and school kids do as they're told.

It seems that under Islam children are not required to fast. I'm not sure how much in line with Islamic teaching in China's northwest this website is - http://unity1.wordpress.com/2013/07/31/on-children-fasting-ramadan-in-uk-primary-and-secondary-schools/ - but in the UK it seems that Muslim parents are obliged by Islamic law to abide by school policy with regard to fasting, even if it goes against their wishes.

If people refuse to eat between sunrise and sunset, what is the government going to do? Force feed them?

What happens in the UK (according to that site) is that the school threatens to call in social services on the grounds that parents who insist on a child fasting 18 hours a day are abusing that child.

The Caliphs, Imams and Mad Mullas won't like this...

The Chinese did not ban Ramadan fasting in general, they banned the practise in schools and government offices.

Not a fan of religion in the least, but I'm even less a fan of government intervention in religion. If people refuse to eat between sunrise and sunset, what is the government going to do? Force feed them?

What they'll do, unfortunately, is obvious: Kids suspected of religious observance will be denied entrance to college or to good jobs, and civil servants denied promotions. Sad - and certain to severely piss off the Uighers.

The headline is misleading. The Chinese did not ban Ramadan fasting in general, they banned the practise in schools and government offices. And in that, they are entirely justified. Western countries should take a clue from that, instead of caving to supremacist religious demands.

What adults do in their private lives is one thing, what is practised in public institutions is another. In particular, children should be spared from religious abuse.

This will incite further terrorist acts. The government of China doesn't get it.
