Akie conveniently overlooks Mao Zedong's history of mass people murders and purges, i.e, 45 million people murdered during the Great Leap Forward program and Cultural Revolution:

China has never been the benevolent benefactor it pretends to be.

Well, you all wanted the "imperialist" U.S. out of the Pacific region.
So is it any surprise that China will fill that power vacuum vacated by the U.S.?
You're getting what you wanted.
Agree 100%. China uses its One Belt One Road economic program as the enticement. As part of their infrastructure investment, they buy and control. Then they bring in their military to protect their investment and keep the country in line.

So! The Chinese want to run the World! Everyone outside China would say B.S.. The only thing they will run is excessive population growth!

Pacific islands are not NZ private properties. In fact, NZ is a conquered land and lost justice. The indigenous are minorities, what a joke.

"the long-neglected region."
Whose fault is this?

We really need to stop supporting Communist China as long as it is not a democracy. To keep pretending that money is more important than freedom undermines nations. It's stupid. Someone else can build things the world needs. The 2008 Olympics was supposed to be the turning point. It never happened. Time to stop being enablers of a dictatorship. We don't need to be enabling them.

Small economically weak nations are the easiest prey for the Chinese dictatorship to buy and control. A couple of generations and it will become anther "province". Democratic nations need to call China the threat that it is and take actions to stop it;s aspirations for regional...and who knows maybe global...dominance.

Australia and New Zealand should both offer not only monetary investments but also mutual security assistance with their Pacific island neighbors

China knows that no one will stand in their way, this started with Tibet.

Well, we gave China the technology, the money, the open door. They’re the nouveau riche on the block, but not without problems.

China will soon try to claim ownership of the Pacific as it has done with the South China sea.
Where to after the Pacific falls?
