The PRC does not dictate whom or where Americans meet the leaders of other sovereign states.

21 ( +27 / -6 )

It's a provocation, at a time when the world does not need one.

It is not just a provocation from China but a threat as well! When will they learn that they get no say over Taiwan business? Their laws and wishes do not apply to the democratic and independent Taiwan and they never have. China needs to mind it's own business and not try to interfere in the relations of other nations.

This is why defense budgets get increased in the face of Chinese aggression. Do what China says or face military action? Please, learn how to be friendly instead of hostile.

I cant wait for the independence of Taiwan to be an accepted fact by the Chinese.

And I'm so sick of the "walking on eggshells " every country is supposed to do when any China issue is raised.

Hey, PRC Mandarins ....stick it where the sun dont shine !

15 ( +22 / -7 )

What a disgusting country china is. Just totally ignore them, if pelosi wants to visit Taiwan then just do it. China can do one.

12 ( +19 / -7 )

If Pelosi doesn’t visit then China is calling the shots. The Pentagon has already deferred. Just give her a chance to save face: Covid numbers rising.

Pelops brings nothing to the conversation as far as Taiwan.

stay home.

Is U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi the only choice to despatch on a diplomatically sensitive visit to Taiwan?

White House clash with Pelosi over Taiwan spills into the open

What could possibly go wrong?

As Speaker of the House of Respresentatives Pelosi is surely entitled to meet her equivalents across the ocean, even at a provincial level.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

I have little regard for Pelosi, and if she is going to China, I am sure it is only because it benefits her politically or financially.

But now that dictator Xi has threatened the US if she goes, she absolutely must go. Xi is itching for war. He wants to be God, and domestically things are starting to fall apart for him after 10 years of running the Chinese miracle into the ground. It is tragically only a matter of time before war with China. It's horrible but unavoidable as long as they are ruled by that megalomaniac Xi. In his twisted mind, the US already looks weak because Putin is having his way with Ukraine. That has only encouraged him to think that he can dictate to the US the way he dictates his subjects in China.

She has to go. To cancel the trip would only encourage that evil little man.

3 ( +8 / -5 )

Call Chinas' bluff. Their deteriorating economic situation and growing internal unrest means they cannot afford a war...the disruption to the trade they rely on would be catastrophic. Like Putins' stupid Ukraine adventure, any attempt to forcibly take Taiwan would end in disaster for China.

More yammering from Chinese diplomatic "wolf warriors" who feel they can order everyone in the world around like they do their cowed citizens. Zhao Lijian should understand that when a Chinese Eurasian Wolf or Himalayan wolf meets a Mackenzie Valley grey wolf it had better hope the Mackenzie valley wolf is neither hungry nor randy.

In the heading and article it states 3 times that there is a possible visit to Taiwan by Pelosi.

Nowhere is a visit to China mentioned.

Blinkered?

5 ( +7 / -2 )

China has issued stark private warnings to the Biden administration...

Pelosi is Speaker of the House of Representatives, a branch completely separate from the Executive. Even if Biden opposed her visit, all he could do would be to cajole. He could not stop it. The United States is not China.

It's a typo, but thank you for pointing out the obvious.

Taiwan is currently battling with huge case counts of Covid, they don't need Pelosi to visit

Oh, so now you think Covid is serious? What happened to ‘natural immunity’, ‘open up’ and ‘don’t tell me what to do?’

Taiwan has yet to actually declare independence.

Taiwan isn't officially recognized as an independent nation .

Taiwan officially claims to be the rightful government of all of China.

Of China ! ! !

The people's Republic of China and the Republic of China are both China.

Its a civil war between China and Taiwan and guess what it's a civil war because its all China.

Some people refuse to acknowledge it's a civil war.

Countries don't have civil wars against each other do they !

And the USA constantly involves itself in other nations civil wars and takes advantage of the situation.

The Communist PRC and the always sad individuals there can just shut their mouths.

Taiwan can invite ANYONE they wish into their free country. If Pelosi accepts an invitation then good for her, and good for Taiwan.

What are you gonna do, PRC? Cry and throw some more tantrums?

They are pretty good at starting wars (keeps the arms industry humming), but not so good at finishing them. America projects weakness - and that will lead to a terrible war.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

If Pelosi goes to Taiwan, I predict there will be a military response. I hope I am wrong but they’ve already said there will be consequences. It’s not a bluff. What military response?

PLA warplanes could "accompany" Pelosi's plane at an appropriate distance, enter the island at the same time as she does, skim over her landing site, and then fly over the island and return to the Chinese mainland.

Well what does that do? It dares the Taiwanese to take action. Do and war breaks out . Don’t and the PLA air force flies over Taiwan with authority and will.

Despite what we read in media, PLAAF jets have never flown over the actual landmass of Taiwan. They have only ever entered Taiwan’s ADIZ, an area so large that it covers a good chunk of China’s mainland landmass.

Allowing a hostile power to fly warplanes over your capital is a major humiliation, both to Taiwan and to the US. If Taiwan fires at the PLAAF jets, that will mean either a no-fly zone, or an outright war. My bet is on outright war.

So Nancy is a silly lady if she is insisting on going to Taiwan with no regard to the consequences of the people on the island. Stick to buying Nvidia stocks. Why risk war and destroy the chip factories in Taiwan?

Bluffing is cultural and flippantly “calling China’s bluff” is the actual unnecessary huffing and puffing. In my opinion, they don’t make idle threats.

Redstorm, the only thing between Japanese and an invasion of Japan,is the US military

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

The US will make a big mess again and this time with Taiwan. Then Australia and Japan gets dragged in and bases in Okinawa are fair game. Just let Australia sell coal to China. Why drag them into a Chinese Civil War? Because after Taiwan, Australia’s next? The Pentagon has already spoken. Nancy stay home.

I’m not sure if the US can ship ammo into theater fast enough to sustain war with the Chinese. Will leave this to Desert Tortoise and the experts here. Rocket artillery are tactical weapons. China has plenty of strategic standoff weapons.

China has pretty much commoditized short range ballistic missiles or rockets with more than 100-150 km range rockets. There is an entire supply chain dedicated to them. It is quite hard to match.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Equally, Taiwan has had many years of threats from the mainland to prepare for any kind of attack.

Perhaps the US should take a page from Zhuge Liang in Chinese history and send a stuffed dummy of Pelosi to Taipei.

Redstorm, Russian and Chinese regular invade Japan Straits, the government of Japan,do nothing Russian occupation of Japan island,we invaded Japan that should be considered a successful victory

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

The people's Republic of China and the Republic of China are both China.

Its a civil war between China and Taiwan and guess what it's a civil war because its all China.

There was a guy standing on top of a white van in Harajuku last Sunday. He was flying banners with Bushido 武士道 written in black calligraphy and giving political speeches about what’s wrong with Japan today. His basic message is that the men of Japan are weak and need to stand up for Japan.

The Way of the Samurai or Bushido to me is about honor. You never see scars on a Samurai’s back because they have honor and don’t strike a warrior and will wait until he’s facing him. They fight like rhinoceros beetles, face to face. Samurais also don’t chicken out and turn and runaway so there are no scars on their backs. They are not Jesse James, a cruel vicious killer who shot people in their backs.

One aspect of this honor can be seen in Sumo and Judo matches. If you lose, you humbly admit that your opponent was stronger, defeated you and that you lost. We can see this in virtually every match. Japanese soccer players also don’t dive. It’s honor. This does not happen everywhere though.

We did not witness this honor on Jan 6th 2021. One side lost but refused to admit defeat. We also did not see this at the end of the Chinese Civil War 1945-49. One side lost, fled the continent and escaped to an island yet still has not admitted defeat. Still claims to be China.

Had they had honor, they would have put an end to their civil war and there wouldn’t be a China/ Taiwan issue today.

The Chinese don’t have the honor that the Japanese do. If you lose, you should be big enough to admit that you’ve lost.

Redstorm, Russian and Chinese regular invade Japan Straits, the government of Japan,do nothing

Yrral

China has ever invaded Japan and Russia did some land grabbing at the end of the war.

If I may, he means the Russian and Chinese navy sailing through International waters through the Tsugaru Straights, the body of water separating Hokkaido and Honshu, the main island.

Invade is not the right word here, and China has never invaded Japan. That was the Mongolians in the Yuan dynasty.

No Chinese government has ever invaded Japan in over 4000 years of history. That counts did something, don’t you think?

OssanAmerica’s weak argument is that the Mongols had Chinese in their army therefore technically the Chinese have invaded Japan. He did not verified the ethnicity of those on the ships that came over to attack Japan.

By that flawed logic, there were Koreans in the Imperial Japanese Army, the IJA invaded China, and so technically, he could conclude that Korea has and Koreans invaded China in 1937 in thd Sino-Japanese War. And OssanAmerica actually makes this silly argument.

It’s clear that the primary reason for the current desperation of the globalist Neocon Prometheans stems from the way they seriously underestimated the Chinese. But the Chinese have turned out to be significantly harder to fool than the Europeans of the West, and now they are demonstrating that they no longer require guidance in order to advance their technology beyond Western levels.

A report by Bloomberg Thursday found that Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC). China’s premier chip manufacturer has developed the ability to produce chips to the highest Western standards despite US sanctions that had been designed to prevent such an advance.

According to a report by industry blog Tech Insights, which Bloomberg has confirmed, SMIC has produced Bitcoin mining semiconductors with 7-nanometer technology since last July. The figure represents the size of the transistors involved, and the smaller the figure, the smaller the transistors, and the more transistors that can be fit on a single chip. The more transistors on a chip, the faster and more efficient it will be.

Previously SMIC had only produced chips to a standard of 14-nanometers, and the US government had hoped to prevent any advance beyond that level. In 2020, the US government had banned export of equipment capable of producing 10nm and below level chips to SMIC. Currently the US government is focusing on preventing Dutch supplier ASML from supplying similar machines to SMIC.

Although ASML is already forbidden from selling its most advanced equipment to SMIC, the Biden administration is trying to tighten the ban to include less advanced technologies as well.

Currently Taiwan’s TSMC and South Korea’s Samsung can make 7nm semiconductors, while US-based Intel is slated to release its own 7nm chip next year. Currently the most advanced US and European chips are only 12nm.

It is not clear how China has reached this level of technological sophistication. Some have suggested they may have modified their 14nm tooling.

Meanwhile, in Europe, the lights may literally be going out this winter thanks to the reprehensible stupidity of the European leaders who believed the lies of the neocons and agreed to act as the USA’s economic proxy army:

Switzerland has developed an emergency plan in the event of an energy crisis if natural gas and electricity supplies run short, the Basler Zeitung newspaper reported this week.

According to the paper, the Swiss government has been working in tandem with industrial companies for several months on the plan. It includes several steps, ranging from a public awareness campaign with calls for energy saving, such as turning off shop window lights and heaters, to rationing electricity for about 30,000 large energy consumers.

The government also warns of the possibility of power shutdowns in certain areas of the country from four to eight hours a day as a more stringent measure.

As I have repeatedly warned you, we’ll be fortunate if we emerge on the other end of this civilizational catastrophe with indoor plumbing and electric lights. Abandoning the traditions of your fathers, adopting foreign creeds, and accepting foreign rulers seldom ends well for any people.

To Pres. Biden: Make sure she goes and don't show weakness toward China.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

People sometimes forget that China has been around for around 5000 years, and is one in six human beings. It is nuclear armed and one of worlds most technologically advanced country and second largest economy. From Cambridge University studies..”Among the most studied racial or ethnic groups, people of East Asian descent usually have the highest average IQ, followed by people of European ancestry.”

so she she should think twice about starting a new war.

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

China, with their high IQ, is not dumb enough to start a war over something as silly as this visit.

And the USA constantly involves itself in other nations civil wars and takes advantage of the situation.

Like Russia is doing in Ukraine?

Or China in Tibet - though Tibet was part of China and happy before the central govt decided it didn't like the religious teachings and decided repression was the way forward.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Dumb is as dumb does... She doesn't care about the fallout when it's someone else in the firing line and her husband is probably well invested in the arms industry that will profit from conflict. And Xi who's scrambled to the top from being raised in a forced labour camp when his father who was an administrator that fell from grace after Mao's end doesn't care about the human side of anything that he does either. He's focused on his legacy (his belts and road's ideology with the expansionist agenda hidden there in), the financial gain's to his cohort and grip on power within the party that he leads. The 23 million people who live in Taiwan don't come into the equation and in every likelihood it's going to leed to the blockading of the China straight to foreign shipping and annexation of the China Sea and plundering of their neighbours resources. Acts they are already guilty of, only now they'll claim a legitimacy of being much more forceful in applying.

If Pelosi goes to Taiwan, I predict there will be a military response. I hope I am wrong but they’ve already said there will be consequences. It’s not a bluff. What military response?

China has many unconventional measures it can use before resorting to military force. One response could be to impose a virtual customs border on Taiwan where international flights are told to land in Fuzhou or Xiamen before continuing on to Taiwan. The US government would undoubtedly ignore this but all major air carriers (and their insurers) would comply or stop flying to Taiwan entirely.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Is China now so Powerful, that it can dictate to other Global Politicians what they can and can not do ?

Now, If Pelosi does not go to Taiwan, then China's CCP will be seen to have won that argument, and the U.S. will be confirmed as being Weak, subservient to the CCP - who have probably already infiltrated / influenced most senior Government roles Globally anyway...

This is a sorry state for Global Democracy - well, at least - not the so called Chinese (CCP) version of Democracy where the result is known in advance...

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

I'm tired of right wing Americans following the orders of authoritarian regimes. Where did their spine go?

Reagan is rolling over in his grave.

This view is simplistic and paints with one of those giant Japanese calligraphy brushes. The right does not follow the orders of the CCP and categorizing everyone into two groups is too simple.

① First you have people who are border insane. Peter Navarro, Steve Bannon, and Mike Pompeo and they get connected with the cult Falugong 法輪功. These people are not in the Biden administration but they were very influential in the Trump administration. They do not follow orders of authoritarian regimes.

② Second, you have people who are hawks (Michael Pillsbury, HR McMaster, Matthew Pottinger, Peter Thiel, and Mike Pompeo, Mark Rubio, and CECC). This groups thinks that China is going to take over the world and that the US has to increase military in order to contain China. The issue is that these people seem to think that war with China is going to happen but it's the Chinese that is instigating and pushing for war. They do not follow orders of authoritarian regimes.

③ Next, you have foreign policy establishment (Blinken, Sullivan, Rush Doshi, Brookings). These people are not insane. However, most in the establishment believe that the US must remain the sole superpower and that China is an adversary because it is not a democracy. They talk about the rule based system when all it is just who makes the rules. They do not follow orders of authoritarian regimes.

④ Then you have the sane neutrals. You see a lot of these people in the Defense department. The remarkable thing about the US is that the Defense Department is probably the most China-friendly arm of the US government because they can assess the risk of losing if war breaks out. These are the level headed people whom you are calling spineless when in reality, they are most knowledgeable about military conflict with China. They do not follow orders of authoritarian regimes.

⑤ After that you have corporate finance and big tech. US China Business Council, National Committee on US-China Relations). This group is was prominent in US politics in 2012, but have lost control starting around 2016. They are still there to keep things from going into total free fall.

⑥ The bleeding hearts - Human Rights Watch and NGOs. The issue with them is that they are being used by the hawks in order to set up evil China as genocidal. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has visited Xinjiang. Where are the Uighurs now? Have they all died? These people do not follow orders of authoritarian regimes.

⓻ The US public - there is a disconnect between the public and the elites. The public cares more about making a decent living and inflation than about China. No one wants war. You can see the effect of US public opinion on things like the war in Ukraine: when it comes time to decide whether to deploy US troops you hit the brick wall. They also do not follow orders of authoritarian regimes but just want better healthcare, safer streets, choices and rights of citizens.

In conclusion, no one is following the order of authoritarian regimes.
