in retaliation for similar U.S. moves

It’s Tik for Tok.

"China has decided to impose sanctions on some people that have behaved badly on Hong Kong-related issues"

No egg noodles for you, so take that! Oh, and you're not allowed to visit China either, so take that too!

That should really get U.S. lawmakers to think twice.

On Monday, Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai, one of the city's most vocal Beijing critics, was arrested under the security law.

The CCP like all authoritarian regimes throughout modern history is attacking the free, for-profit press, especially pro-democracy outlets. The free, for-profit press remains an enemy of pro-authoritarians. In the 'west' as well. Google 'Trump attacks media' for an example.

China on Monday sanctioned 11 Americans

It would be interesting to learn how much each of the 11 have invested in US corporations getting richer doing business with China.

Trump on Thursday ordered Americans to stop doing business within 45 days with popular Chinese apps WeChat and TikTok.

Will Trump, Ivanka and Jared sever their personal business ties with CCP members.

Who would ever want to go to the cesspool Nazi-state Hong Kong anyway? A place where disagreeing with the illegitimate "government" will see you arrested, taken to the mainland, and never seen again.

I wonder if Diane Feinstein or Joe and his family are sanctioned as well.

China is finished for awhile. They have worn out their welcome!

Putting sanctions on Elaine Chao and Mitch McConnell would mean something. The rest of the elected officials, not so much.

Why not rescind Ivanka’s many trademark deals?

Wouldn't worry so much about not being able to travel to or be sanctioned by this third world government.

Hong Kong is a great place. I think any city in the world will react to people burning, looting and throwing rocks.

Ever been there? It once was a pretty nice place. Nothing else like it anywhere in the world. Winnie the Pooh in his overwhelming insecurity has ruined it.

I reckon I'm not as interested in who did what in the past in China to make a pile of money as coming up with a doable means to move US and other western corporations out of China in the immediate future. Time to cease doing business with the Chinese. Shop wisely, read labels to see where the things you buy are made and if it says "Made in China" set the item down and buy what you need from another country. You can do it. I shop this way now. There is precious little you might want to buy that is only made in China.

Well said quercetum.

OK. No Huawei for you guys. Anything made in China is off limits.

‘grossly interferes in China's internal affairs’. Good one. This a James Bond license to kill..literally. Anyone they deem persona non grata seems to disappear. If Xi & co. played more with int’l rules they may even prove to be nice guys. As is they're suffering the Rodney Dangerfield complex of getting no respect.

More tit for tat may start a war someday. Democracy and communist are just like water and oil.

It is more then time to stop Xi and his gang.

i have 3 small companies but the little business we did with China is over. And I have not bought anything made in China for at least 2 years.

it is time now to boycott the Olympics in Beijing. Emperor Xi will use them for propaganda just like Berlin 1936.

The IOC will not do it, protecting their financial interest with empty slogans such as “ separate sports from politics”.

I would be a bit worried. If China ever adopts US-style sanctions where companies who do business with these sanctioned individuals also face sanctions, you could see Apple, American Airlines, or Bank of America closing accounts and refusing to do business with Americans in America who are on the Chinese sanctions list, lest they be cut off from the Chinese market.

Fear mongering....

The clock is tik-tok-ticking on this volatile relationship but I'm willing to hand over in a trade Cruz and Rubio for Jimmy Lai and a dissident to be named later.

I wonder why Trump hasn't been sanctioned by the CCP...

Fear mongering....

European banks, insurance companies, shipping companies, construction firms, etc have all acquiesced to the US sanctions regime over the Nordstream 2 pipeline, many against the wishes of their own governments. Why wouldn't they also acquiesce to Chinese sanctions against Americans? Why would any global company with international shareholders and business interests in China refuse to comply? Money talks, patriotism walks.

Is Trump'chump's lovey-dovey with Xi about to end too? Awwwwwwwwwww.......

Yes, twice. Was is the key word here. HK is now a dangerous police state where freedom is a dirty word. Communist China is monitoring everyone, and uses the thug HK police as their attack dogs on those they dislike.

The smart and educated Hong Kongers are already finalizing their options for getting out. They should be supported by all those people and countries who love freedom and hate communism.

The answer is simple. All of the parties you mention seek to conduct their business in US dollars using some aspect the US financial system. The US is under no obligation to allow anyone in the world to use their sovereign national currency and banking systems to support US adversaries and undermine the US. The US has every right to tell the world if you want to use the US dollar in trade you will abide by the US rules. If you want to do something different, find another currency to trade in. Good luck.

"I wonder why Trump hasn't been sanctioned by the CCP"

Probably for the same reason the US hasn't sanctioned Xi Jinping. When you sanction the nation's top leader(s) that is usually the end of all diplomatic engagement and maybe even the end of diplomatic and trade relations. It is something reserved for when one nation sees their relationship with the other beyond repair and the only apparent path left is confrontation across the board.

Because nobody anywhere uses the Chinese Yuen to conduct trade outside of China, China has no leverage. The US has leverage because so much of the world conducts their trade using US dollars and the US financial system. Either play by US rules or find another currency (that nobody really wants) to conduct trade in, or resort to barter. At worst China could restrict the ability of US businesses to operate in China but that knife cuts both ways. Doing so would put a lot of Chinese who work for these firms out of work and probably lead to an end of trade relations with the US altogether, putting more Chinese out of work and greatly harming China's GDP growth.

None of those people have any worries about the Chinese sanctions. It isn't like US residence people move money to China or invest directly in Chinese companies.

But the opposite is definitely true, especially for the Chinese elite. After all, they need money outside China to buy all the foreign goods and to send their kids to schools outside Chinese control.

For all the people impacted by using wechat. Just switch to some other, worldwide, encrypted chat app. What's the the problem with that? Or does the CCP-govt block every non-Chinese apps? China really has the surveillance-state nailed.
