Monday marked the sixth anniversary of a ruling by an international tribunal that invalidated China's sweeping claims to the South China Sea, a conduit for about $3 trillion worth of ship-borne trade each year.

A nice summation of how laughable the CCP's claim is and why they are making it.

Drove away, yeah right. Sounds like the time the guy next door got drunk at 16:00 and started yelling at the Sun to go away. Sure enough, about an hour later, it did. Exhibit A in "Correlation does not equal Causation"

But eventually, the PLA will start feeling it's oats and decide to go beyond yelling. We best be ready when they do because allowing the S. China Sea (Just because it is named after you, doesn't mean you own it) to become a lake for the Chinese Navy is not going to happen.

More CCP lies.

Laughable from China.

China is just like the unpopular fat boy at every school who makes up nonsense in a desperate attempt to be credible.

No US destroyer was scared off by China - now, or ever.

A U.S. destroyer sailed near the disputed Paracel Islands in the South China Sea on Wednesday, drawing an angry reaction from Beijing, which said its military had "driven away" the ship after it illegally entering territorial waters.

China clearly needs desperate and immediate access to a reliable GPS system as the US ship was hundreds of kilometers from the nearest Chinese territory. It's military also does not understand the concept of forward motion that carries a ship from one point to another and has it pass through the waters in between. The vessel was headed in a direction and continued on unimpeded and China chooses to claim it drove them out. Another grand Chinese claim that is in complete error.

China needs to shut its mouth and stop its illegal attempts to order others around in international waters and international airspace. Better yet it should simply go back to China if they cant understand what international waters are.

Did the Chinese borrow the North Korean News presenter to share this news ?

I used to think the same until the USS Connecticut which some believe was taken out by the PLA Navy when its radar technology encroached in and could not navigate in territory claimed by the Chinese.

Yeah, that is not what happened.

I will take Desert's explanation over this "theory" (and that is the most diplomatic term I can come up with) any day of the week.

The unfortunate fact that is widely known to all but it seems those who "really know the truth" is that a very small percentage of the ocean floor has been charted to fine detail.

The odds that the Chinese could:

A) find a Seawolf class attack submarine in the first place.

B) Track and attack it without leaving any evidence of the kind. No residue, no electronic trail, no ships in the area, no nothing.

And that:

C) The entire crew either doesn't know or knows and decides that none of them, NOT ONE, is going to blab to anyone. Girlfriends, wives (both?) Family, friends, NOBODY.

D) The US would take that on the chin and let it go.

It just beggars belief.

It is so farcical as to lead one to question the cognitive abilities of anyone who would postulate it in the first place.

CCP China is a rogue nation which ignores international law and blatantly lied about its intentions to militarize the South China Sea and build artificial islands. Current unelected repressive dictator Xi stated without shame to then President Obama that China would never militarize the South China Sea.....and then did precisely that. After the International Court in the Hague ruled for the Philippines in 2016, negating China's ridiculous, over the top and illegal claims to own the whole SCS, China just said it didn't recognize the International Court ruling. China will never lead anything with this childish and selfish attitude. No one trusts CCP China, especially after it lied and covered up the initial COVID outbreak in Wuhan.

China does this to every country in the pacific on a weekly basis.

To quote Confucius, a Chinese philosopher: Don't do unto others what you don't want done unto you.

It’s ok, their tofu dreg ships and planes aren’t much of a threat.

US destroyer provoked near China-how abt to inform us like that?

I will take Desert's explanation over this "theory" (and that is the most diplomatic term I can come up with) any day of the week.

So the official story is human error, accident and incompetence on the part of the US Navy.

During the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia (Operation Allied Force), five U.S. Joint Direct Attack Munitionguided bombs hit the Chinese embassy in Belgrade. Clinton apologized and said it was an accident.

No one with “cognitive abilities” would believe that it was just an accident. Desert Tortoise claims that it was completely by design and posted the details. I would agree. Accidental bombings and something involving a nuclear sub in the South China Seas and a captain asleep at the wheel are equally dubious.

Maybe they thought it was a pirate ship, the US 7th fleet been dogged with allegations of corruption and bad leadership

The U.S. Navy said the USS Benfold "asserted navigational rights and freedoms in the South China Sea near the Paracel Islands, consistent with international law".

If they are referring to the unclos maybe they should join it first

A nice summation of how laughable the CCP's claim is and why they are making it.

I used to think the same until the USS Connecticut which some believe was taken out by the PLA Navy when its radar technology encroached in and could not navigate in territory claimed by the Chinese. The US sub sits in San Diego now out of order.

The US version is that the sub just hit a sea mountain.

Desert Tortoise, without question, is the number one resident naval expert here at Japan Today. Desert Tortoise’s unconvincing explanation is basically that the captain was asleep at the wheel.

This is the world class US Navy vessel that just rammed into a sea mountain? We are not talking 1940’s subs here. Where is the technology?

USS Connecticut crew incompetence or

China has employed diving under the radar technology that can take out US Navy vessels without even being suspected of doing so.

Take your pick.

The United States regularly carries out what it calls Freedom of Navigation Operations in the South China Sea challenging what it says are restrictions on innocent passage imposed by China and other claimants.

It's not just China's claims that are being disrespected, other countries' claims as well

Is NATO trying to set up missile bases surrounding non-NATO countries again?

:D

Come on - let me joke a bit !

The CCP simply indicated that ships with crew that have not 100% completed CRT and diversity training in the last 30 days are not allowed entry to the area.

The misgendered “mostly peaceful” and poorly identified “destroyer” (its really an enabler) then left to prevent any micro aggressions.
