as it struggles to stamp out a rapidly spreading COVID-19 outbreak in China's largest city.

So to those who've claimed herd immunity was going to end all this, does herd immunity kick in after this latest wave?

While the rest of the world has decided that Corona is now endemic and we have to live with it (especially since the latest strains are mild), mainland China is stuck with the dogmatic "zero covid" policy that XiJi Ping insist on. So they are stuck in this never-ending horror.

concern was growing about the potential economic impact of an extended lockdown in China's financial capital and a major shipping and manufacturing center

Shanghai is China's economic powerhouse, its six key advanced industries, namely electronic information products, automobiles, petrochemicals, fine steel, medical equipment and bio-medicine will be affected.

Europe must have a secret formula. An unvaccinated influx and no spike

The EU is indeed experiencing a spike in Covid-19 cases.

What is angering Shanghainese is how the government takes children who test positive from their families and isolates them. That to me is cruel in the extreme.

Maybe they know something about the virus we don’t ? Wouldn’t be too surprising would it ?

If the infected households have pets, the army is killing them - by slowly beating them to death with sticks. Lots of heartbreaking videos of this. They are taking away toddlers and children as young as 3 months from their mothers and sticking them in pens, with 3 other children to a crib. All this in Shanghai, which is the most "advanced" part of China. One can only imagine what is going on in the more remote areas. Between Russia and China the world is becoming more savage by the day. It seems to be spreading, and I doubt the US and Europe will provide much in the way of sanctuary from this trend. Frankly, Covid-19 should be the least of humanity's worries right now.

But but but....weren't Chinese people wearing their masks?! :P

You obviously don't understand what herd immunity is and what it does.

Using tactics that were used pre-vaccine development is ridiculous.....there IS no preventing outbreaks. This is in EVERY country, it is now something that we have to live with and with the vaccines, we can.

this week, UK has 5,000,000 infections, how many dead? Crowd immunity works for heathy people under around 65, with no health problems.

My cousin visited NZ last year and during the 14 day quarantine they separated their two young children from them because her husband tested positive. They couldn’t see their children the whole two weeks. Not China, NZ.

Persistently acting against the best available scientific advice is a terrible way of making public health decisions. This applies for both extremes, letting the infection run wild without any measure to slow down or control the number of infections just because you have most of your vulnerable population vaccinated is bad, but so is doing exactly the opposite. In this case China is putting all their eggs in the basket of isolation, without listening to the experts that say Omicron is not as easy to control this way, and by choking their own economy they are producing other health problems that could completely outweigh any benefit from this approach. A failure to properly vaccinate people (because that is not a priority for the zero covid policy) is only going to make things worse the same as it happened in Hong Kong.

China will fail containing this virus and the one who will going to face the outbreak is us the world and the people. Who have nothing to do with this but have to withstand this Chinese engineered virus.

The best scientific advice to protect against becoming infected with Covid or dying from a Covid related is death is not becoming infected with Covid. A very simple concept.

And China has had the greatest success in the world in preventing its people from becoming infected with Covid and in limiting Covid related deaths, as a result of its successful zero covid policy.

Australia, and New Zealand also had great success with the Zero Covid policy. Those two countries, similar to China, have a relatively low population density. Hong Kong does not, so it is not a good example to use in comparing with China's success.

And when Australia and New Zealand moved away from the zero covid policy, their covid infection rate and deaths related to Covid skyrocketed.

This is all basic, easily accessible information to anyone without a science background.
