rgcivilian1:
Just saber-rattling for now, and aimed at unifiying the masses by producing a foreign enemy.
But the CCP could indeed one day be the cause of a new shooting war involving superpowers, if they see their position seriously in trouble.
Add that to all the things to worry about...
rgcivilian1
Chinese President Xi Jinping urged his army to increase its readiness for "armed combat" as officials say the country faces new security threats.
Xi told Chinese military officers on Tuesday that it was "necessary to step up preparations for armed combat" and improve the military's ability to carry out missions.
It's "peaceful" intentions all along..
TheLongTermer
Huh?
Seems they did the same to SG. Gen Yamashita took full advantage of that.
rgcivilian1
This behavior by China with endless threats, territory encroachment/manipulation on its neighbors i.e. Japan, plenty of proof on that one, continuous currency manipulation, the massive military buildup and still threaten the US. The same country who actually saved it from Japan in WW2. Helped it with UN funding, WHO and WTO acceptance, now turns the help into threats. Not acting much as a developed so called #2 economy country in the world. Disappointed in China government not it's people.
TheLongTermer
Zichi your reply doesnt answer why the British backed down, you basically said a whole lot about nothing.
They should of looked out for the future and people of HK first, instead it seems Thatcher got punked by China and sold out. Kind of sums it up.
That is how things are posted here, might as well get used to it. They are only interested in stats when it supports their position.
Trump is a buffoon, Trump is incompetent, Trump is inept, is the daily rage, but they are selective about their facts; which ones to ignore and which ones matter.
WilliB
zichi:
That is incorrect. Central HK was permanently ceded to Britain. The 99 year lease refers to the New Territories.
WilliB
ulysses:
What sort of strawman answer is that? The fact that Biden son is on the payroll of a CCP affiliated company is a fact. There is nothing to "look into", there is simply the question if you ignore it or if you acknowledge that it is a massive incentive to be soft on the CCP.
TheLongTermer
It doesnt matter what Trump does or does not do.
2050 and the 2 system one government scam is over.
The Brits failed the HK people. Still trying to figure out the perpetual lease, and the 99 year lease.
bass4funk
He sure did just ask Cuomo did just as Dr. Barbot did, just like Pelosi did, they all did, I did as well.
Send the bill to China.
wtfjapan
Has he cancelled his million dollar clothing contracts with China? Yes or no...
has he paid back the $ 250million hes owes China state owned bank!?
wtfjapan
No, the only thing that the Democrats tried to do was to politicize the issue once again and try to put this anchor around trumps neck and keep it there for awhile.
Trump was the one who downplayed the pandemic called it the new democratic hoax, yes that anchor is there for all time, his failure to lead has resulted in 100000 dead Americans.
Hiro S Nobumasa
The only effective counter measure that China can do is make a grand declaration that the PROC is establishing full diplomatic ties with the ROC-TW !
Thus it'll then be HK-PROC, Taiwan-ROC!
After all, that's really what the world da-kine expect from the 'Land of Confucius'!
Will Trump choke upon hearing it?
lincolnman
The topic was business with China, and you said "future" when its clear that Trump and his family have extensive business partnerships with China going back years.... Care to admit you were wrong?
Has he cancelled his million dollar clothing contracts with China? Yes or no...
Strangerland
Well, he came up with a squirrel of a conspiracy theory to throw out there for the dogs.
ulysses
I am sure they will, not that it will make any difference to the right wing.
My friend Rudy has been looking into that for years and has come up with nothing, maybe you can check with him.
Strangerland
Well, we could equally argue we have security and terrorism problems in the world in the aftermath of the American invasion of the sovereign nation of Iraq, based on the promise of WMDs.
Now you may say this has nothing to do with my original point, but actually it does. I said that doing a bad job of it is worse than doing nothing. Iraq was Little Bush's response to 9-11. The invasion of Iraq was a quintessentially a "bad job" in responding to 9-11. It would have been better to have done nothing, than to have invaded Iraq.
JeffLee
@Strangerland
Doing a bad job of it is worse than doing nothing.
Not in this case. The major danger is when the world becomes complacent, viewing China's failure to live up to WTO commitments, technology theft, human rights abuses, etc., etc., as "normal," and does nothing about it.
That was the problem during the Bush-Obama years. We have COVID the disaster today, because we didn't do enough against China in the aftermath of SARS.
Strangerland
I'm aware of the fact that he's doing a very incompetent job of it. Though I do agree with some of the reasons for his doing it, and the fact that it is being done.
But lets be clear. Doing a bad job of it is worse than doing nothing. People die through incompetence, this virus proves it. Remember, the leading cause of death in America right now is Donald J. Trump's incompetence.
Strangerland
* four more years of Trump.
Strangerland
I think the bigger question isn't whether Biden woudl be as hard on China as Trump, it's how long until Trump's incompetence lets China take over the world?
He's already managed to let Russia succeed with all their goals in just three years. Four more should be enough to let China achieve theirs as well.
mmwkdw
If Trump doesn't get reelected in November, then will China take over the World - as it's increasingly looking like that's its intentions - as clearly Australia can vouch for. Would Biden be just as hard on China as Trump ?
I hope the CCP falls before November, but... that's wishful thinking.
China would have the potential of becoming a wonderful place without the CCP.... but initially things would be really hard.
WilliB
lincolnman:
How did you switch the topic from patents to trademarks? And did you notice that Trump before taking office put all his business interests in a trust to be administered by 2 of his sons? (Neither of which is on the payment role from either Ukrainian oil companies or mainland Chinese investment companies, in case you are curious.)
Also you might have noticed that your much-hated Drumpf has barred Huawei from american G5 contracts and limited US high-tech sales to them. How does that fit into your tunnel vision?
Strangerland
I keep asking what globalist means, but you always refuse to answer. And now you're making some vague allusion to globalism.
I'll tell you exactly what globalism is, and who the globalists are.
Globalism is finding the cheapest place the planet to get your manufacturing done, at the cost of the people of your own country.
Globalists are those who do this.
Note that Trump, the guy beloved by so many of those who complain about globalists, is himself the quintessential example of a globalist, being one who manufactures around the world (including China), because it's cheaper than in America.
But that's not where the confusion comes in. The confusion comes in because so many people say 'globalist', but what they apparently mean is 'the jews'.
This is why I ask people whom they are referring to when they speak of the globalists, so we can be clear whether we're talking about actual globalists, or just being anti-Semitic bigots.
Unsurprisingly, so often when I ask for clarification, the person chooses not to clarify which "globalists" they are speaking of.
WilliB
Jimizo:
Makes me wonder what you have read or claim to have read. Did you read the books by George Soros and Thomas Barnette that lay out the kind of globalist thinking that politicians like Merkel, Macaron, Clinton, or Biden have bought into? Did you look into the activities of the Open Society Foundation?
My "brand of anti-globalism" asks to preserve nation statets and self-determination, and act against imperialist overreach. Nation states are involved with each other all the time, via trade, travel, diplomacy, etc. I am not sure what exactly you want. Support the CCP?
lincolnman
Future? You're already way behind....
The Chinese government granted 18 trademarks to companies linked to President Donald Trump and his daughter Ivanka Trump over the last two months, Chinese public records show, raising concerns about conflicts of interest in the White House.
In October, China’s Trademark Office granted provisional approval for 16 trademarks to Ivanka Trump Marks LLC, bringing to 34 the total number of marks China has greenlighted this year, according to the office’s online database. The new approvals cover Ivanka-branded fashion gear including sunglasses, handbags, shoes and jewelry, as well as beauty services and voting machines.

I think it's a fake smear and QPQ between Trump and his Chinese business partners, just like he tried to pull in Ukraine...
Jimizo
I have. There are so many interpretations of it from groups as diverse as socialists, conservatives, conspiracy theorists, crackpots, racists, people who parrot podcasters and more.
It’s such a flexible term that so many ‘free thinkers’ have latched onto. Does your brand of anti-globalism allow other countries to involve themselves in what is going on between China and Hong Kong?
Most importantly, how far would you take this involvement?
WilliB
jimizo:
You might want to read up on what "globalism" means. That would spare us some meaningless comments.
WilliB
ulysses:
You think so? Well, I am sure our watchful media keep an eagles eye on every patent deal or business opportunity that "lady ivanka" or "jared" make in future.
So what do you think of Hunter Bidens lucrative place on the board of the CCP-affiliated investment company BHP?
lincolnman
They are made in China - is there a US flag by them on his Trumpstore website? Nope - not made in the US. As has been admitted by Trump himself, they're made in China, along with other items from his Trump Collection Clothing Line... As big a Trump fan as you are, I would have thought you'd know more about him....
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-event-touted-made-america-goods-lot-his-merchandise-couldn-n893656
One is Donald Trump. He's giving money to the Communist Chinese to make his clothes. That money, in turn, can be used by the regime to crackdown on HK, or to use to in their cyber theft campaign against us...Isn't that aiding and abetting the enemy?
You sure don't sound very pro-HK freedom if you support a guy who is a business partner with the Chinese communists who are taking that freedom away...
Yakitori-Shinzo
Let me put this in context.
There are 100 people on a island(called China)
One of them(HK) studied a different culture for a while and is protesting that this is the culture perfect for the island.
99 doesn't like this idea.
Now there is another island on the other part of world who likes this one guys idea of change. 33 people on that island are so arrogent that they think they are the God calling shots for what should happen.
Its ridiculous, get a hold of yourself and leave the people of China alone.
Jimizo
Isn’t the idea of involving yourself in other countries’ matters what the ‘globalists’ do?
Blacklabel
for the one millionth time. the current 2020 neckties on the website are NOT made in China. Even if they were, they have no relevance to the freedom of Hong Kong under this Chinese law. or the WHO, or Taiwan, or Chinese coronavirus origins or all the other articles you post about neckties on.
Great, you have finally taken a position. So who are these US businessmen who are doing this? which companies are giving these business contracts? is Hunter Biden involved, as he is a board member of at least one Chinese company?
WilliB
Yakitori-Shinzo:
Right out of the CCPs range of talking points. Just out of curiosity, are you too a member of the famous CCP "five cent armee" (the trolls getting paid 5 cent for every pro-CCP post? on social media?)
Blacklabel
and here come the 2012 neckties again. which was the intent to inject into the conversation all along.
WilliB
OssanAmerica:
Wow, that makes you a minority in the Trump-hating cult. Looks like you dare deviate from the echo chamber sometimes. Congratulations! But be careful, 1% of the time you will be treated as an outcast.
Yakitori-Shinzo
The Hongkong protesters have shown violence and disrespect for law that no sovereign country can pe patient with.
They should go to the US and try to lynch random people and blockade international airports, let's see how they like bullets from the country of human rights they worship, they'll have nostalgia for tear gas and water cannons
Yakitori-Shinzo
you mean the way US has been ignoring the Yamen crisis or Chilean protests.
I would say yes ignore them.
Consistency is better than selective actions.
lincolnman
I say get involved - and require US businessmen (and a President) to stop giving the regime business contracts that fund the crackdown in HK - you agree? If not, then you're not doing much for the cause of freedom...
What's the Liberal in your head say?
What? How much do you think Trump gives to China to make his clothing line items? He charges $125 for one tie - so he must be paying them big bucks. Sure would be nice if he supported freedom by taking those millions and giving it to a US company with US workers - don't ya think?
Yakitori-Shinzo
Most people don't want to get involved with what is China's internal matter. Or only give meaningless statements.
Which I think is sensible.
What are we even protesting for
7 million HK citizens vision of democracy for 27 more year.
But putting sanctions and punishing 1400 million Chinese.
Give me a break.
Most of the world sees what it is :
Trumps election campaign and in wider view US and its self-serving ambitions for maintaining global hegemony.
Blacklabel
Trump signed the Hong Kong Human Rights and Decency Act and even Nancy Pelosi liked it.
So again, should the USA just ignore HK and let China take their freedom with this new law, or should the USA get involved?
So I guess most liberals are simply not answering the question so that they can criticize Trump if he does punish China or criticize him if he doesnt. same as anything else.
Blacklabel
Because trade with China can be used as a bargaining chip to encourage China to give HK their freedom. No trade, no money changing hands equals no leverage. No one is "giving" millions of dollars to the CCP unless its those Soros and Gates type "donations" you are talking about.
ulysses
There are a 100,000 dead patients and their families who would beg to differ.
Where do you come up with such nonsense.
lincolnman
So, explain how giving millions of dollars to the Communist Chinese is being *actively involved in supporting freedom for HK?*
Hmmmm.....I would think giving money to the regime is just helping it fund the crackdown?
Ditto...
bass4funk
As you said, it was a stalemate and definitely agree with you on that.
You were doing so good up until that nonsense. All I can say is if Cuomo and Newsom and all the other mayors and governors can give Trump praise, it shows that he did have good leader ship and even Newsom got annoyed when he was confronted and knew that the main stream media wanted to politicize it and he reiterated that the president followed up on everything that he was promised as well as Cuomo said the same thing.
No, the only thing that the Democrats tried to do was to politicize the issue once again and try to put this anchor around trumps neck and keep it there for awhile.
ulysses
Will China get scared and reform itself if you recognize their‘Imperial Actions’
You mean the one which was all show and no substance??
WilliB
ulysses:
No. The issue is not "punishing China", but rather recognizing and responding to the imperialist actions of the CCP.
You mean the guy who has been lambasted by usual crowd for "starting a trade war" with Communist China?
OssanAmerica
This is going to get mighty messy.
"China's top military commander in Hong Kong has emphasized the role of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in upholding "national sovereignty" in the city a day ahead of expected anti-government protests."
https://edition.cnn.com/2020/05/26/asia/hong-kong-china-military-national-security-intl-hnk/index.html
OssanAmerica
I am a Trump hater. I didn't think he was fit for office in 2016 and I really don't think so now. And I'd love to see him vacate the WH next year. However, just because I think that 99% of his choices and decisions were wrong, it does not mean every position he takes is wrong. Right now China's adverserial postion vis-a-vis the United States and it's allies is a threat to both Trump Haters and Trump Lovers alike. There is a common adversary but people still can't let go. It;s a good bet that the Wumao army is fanning it as well. Does Divide and Conquer ring a bell?
Blacklabel
The question is if the USA should or should not support Hong Kong freedom? The question is more urgent than ever because the USA is being threatened by China to not interfere.
The answer to that is YES, the USA should be actively involved in supporting freedom for HK.
Your turn.
lincolnman
What? You said;
Shouldnt the USA get involved in protecting the freedom of these people. Or do you prefer they just bow down to the Chinese demands and do nothing?
So, should US companies be giving millions of dollars to Communist China while they are taking away HK's freedom and threatening the US?
Yes or No...
Blacklabel
This has nothing to do with any clothing contracts between China and Hong Kong.
Seems so called "normal" people just have to interject the exact same off topic "we hate Trump" comments into every article every day.
lincolnman
How about we cancel all million dollar clothing contracts? What do you say?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYoOPgeTMQc
Normal people can. Members of the Trump Cult - doubtful...cults don't work like that...
ulysses
China needs to be punished but our dear leader , trump doesn't have the moral fibre in him to do so.
A few patents for lady ivanka, business opportunities for jared is all that takes to make our dear leader, trump change his mind.
WilliB
OssanAmerica;
Don´t know about the lovers, but the haters apparently can not, sigh.
Blacklabel
so China wants to pass a law against Hong Kong to take away their freedom. They then threaten the US that if they intervene in their desire to take away peoples freedom they will take action against the USA.
Yet all you can talk about is the USA, with no criticism of China's talk and actions?
Shouldnt the USA get involved in protecting the freedom of these people. Or do you prefer they just bow down to the Chinese demands and do nothing?
Im sure you will criticize either action, but in your opinion should the USA be involved in this, or ignore it?
The Avenger
Any criticism of the Chinese has to be filtered through the lens of the most incompetent and corrupt American regime in history.
TARA TAN KITAOKA
america population is 332,639,102 and trumpet cannot even manage his own country but want to mess with other people's affairs ???. This is really a joke.
OssanAmerica
Can the Trump Haters and Trump Lovers just put a pause on that for a moment? About 7.5 million people are about to come under the iron fist of the CCP dictatorship. That's not good for them, not good for Taiwan not good for all of Asia, not good for the entire world. At some point the world's most militarily and economically powerful dictatorship bent in regional and undoubtedly global dominance needs to be stopped. While that may still be possible. China is going to be a problem regardless of who is in the White House.
WilliB
Trump did sign the "Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act" last year (which our local usual suspects here all predicted he would not, LOL), so a US reaction to this latest CCP overreach should be automatic now.
It is high time other countries stand up to the CCP, and not only the US.
Strangerland

But the moron in trumps eat told him that the Chinese would fold. And trump the moron told us winning trade wars was easy.
The Chinese didn’t fold. Trump didn’t win the trade war cause they’re not easy. And millions of american businesses paid - then got hit by a pathetically managed pandemic by a president who ran away from leading, blamed the problem on everyone and anyone, and claimed it was a democratic hoax.
bass4funk
Pretty much.
Andre Matheus
China isn't comunist for foreigners living on it and for foreigners investing on it. It is only comunist for their own people. That's why goodies from China are so cheap.
Andre Matheus
Comunism is something the world must get rid off, before they spread more and eventually rape the human rights of their people
Peter Wright
I cannot believe my eyes.. who will stop this communist cancer to spread on our lovely planet ?!!
Strangerland
You're right, they didn't lose.
They didn't win either.
It ended up a stalemate. American people paid the price for a prolonged trade war that ended up in zero advancement for America.
Strangerland
Ummmm....
bass4funk
I never said or implied that, relax.
No, they didn’t.

Let's stick to the issue. If the U.S. backs down from supporting democracy in Hong Kong, the world will follow. And finance and property values in Hong Kong will disappear. What's wrong with that? People and their purpose move. Just like a virus.
Strangerland
Cut off your manufacturing, cut off your medicine, put tarriffs on your goods, or even fight a war with their military.
You aren't silly enough to think they're just going to sit back and do nothing are you? That's like that time that moron told Trump that the Chinese would fold to the trade wars that Trump eventually lost.
bass4funk
Give me a break, what the heck are they going to do? We don’t have to be in HK to support the people there and we should use all the tools available to help these people.
non party
Where are the liberals? where are the Antifa? Where are all those who are crying for freedom in USA? Where are so-called democrats? Don't you see the situation of Hong Kong???
This is the reality ... They keep mom, Never say a word. Because they want to China should control all the world. Or else speak up as you speak against Trump ..
