Perhaps they know it is only a matter of time before a much more deadly variant develops and those living with it will be inundated with fatal cases before they can return to a covid zero status. That would mean they have much more information on how this virus was made and what it will do once it evolves.

There is no need to imagine things that require China to have mad scientist decades more advanced than the rest of the world (because that is what would be required for your scenario to make sense), the virus sequence is not even that complicated or different from other known coronaviruses so there is no real chance for this to be true.

A much more simple explanation is that the CCP can use covid as an easy excuse to have extra control of the population and they don't particularly care for the problems and cost the lockdowns have on them.

Zero-covid is not about health, but control. It is there to stay until people revolt or the fake China falls.

I honestly can not say why the CCP is sticking to so questionable a strategy, but the suggestions above of enhanced control in an already oppressive dictatorship certainly resonates.

First, they refused to listen to the scientist doctor who discovered the Covid virus, and who died from it. Now, I am not sure what they are doing, and I wonder if they know what they are doing. It does seem that the Chinese government continues to make decisions while ignoring scientists.

All governments exploited Covid to pursue their own agendas. Most have given up as the cost was breaking their economy and making them too unpopular in nations that have elections. They are now exploiting Russia/Ukraine instead.

China can't exploit Russia/Ukraine as Russia is an ally, but doesn't need to worry about elections, so it is continuing to exploit Covid.

My Taiwanese friend who is a pilot and fly into China regularly saw on the news in China a story that accuses USA of releasing covid there, using sample from Wuhan. State television, accusing USA of funding research just to have access to bat viruses.

So obviously, they are worried there may be more if they open up. But of course, the reality is their indigenous vaccines are relatively ineffective, and couple that with state propaganda dissing western vaccines for two years, they don't have a believable clear path forward.

Many parts of the world are learning to co-exist with COVID-19, but China has repeatedly quashed any speculation of a let-up in its tough counter-epidemic policies, which can range from locking down a local community to sealing an entire city, even though fatalities remain low by global standards and symptoms, if any, are mostly mild.

It would be presumed that 3 million+ deaths in the US and Europe is a high fatality number by global standards.

The Western media wants to criticize China though for efforts that have prevented millions of deaths. The victims though don't have a voice.

Chinese experts have gone on record recognizing that any death of a covid patient is blamed on any comorbidity present, and since around 95% of the deaths happen in patients with comorbities that means that is the amount of deaths the Chinese goverment is hiding.

Making nonsense arguments does nothing against the actual argument that you yourself have argued the Chinese way of dealing with covid is worse than other countries that choose to do focused protection, which means you recognize there is no point in causing ruin and death when the same or better results can be gained by other methods.

Maybe, China knows that the virus has been weaponised in a lab somewhere.

Nobody is hiding 95% of the deaths in a problem that even Chinese experts recognize, much less the countires that are recognized as the examples to follow dealing with covid, of wich China is not included.

Nobody has made that nonsensical argument, there is no need, once reporting of deaths is equalized two dozen other countries including developing ones have lower rates than China, and that is even without considering the effect of the zero covid policy that also causes deaths.
