China vows retaliation if U.S. proceeds with Taiwan arms sale

I say call their bluff. Cause the international community is about to completely disconnect from China, as virtually EVERYONE sees them as a belligerent and bellicose THUG.

Taiwan as an independent and sovereign country can buy whatever it wants. China has no say in the matter.

20 ( +23 / -3 )

And for any Chinese that may read this, Taiwan is a country

18 ( +22 / -4 )

We stand with you Taiwan against any and all aggression from China!

18 ( +21 / -3 )

ban China

17 ( +19 / -2 )

China are acting like a baby more and more, they refuse to understand that ethnic Chinese don't want communist overlords. The Nation of Taiwan is a happy successful Democracy they don't want a leader for life nor social points or re education camps. They are happy and that makes China mad.

, as virtually EVERYONE sees them as a belligerent and bellicose THUG

Except perhaps Russia.

Putin says Russia-China military alliance can't be ruled out

The US Navy regularly sends ships into the contested waters to exercise its freedom of navigation operations in the Southeast Asia Sea. Yet, in every incident, the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has threatened to take tough actions against the US ships but nothing has really happened since 2013.

Should the US pay attention to another "serious threat" of China this time?

11 ( +13 / -2 )

Except perhaps Russia.

Fair enough.

But so what? Even if China and Russia team up, it won't matter. They can't take the whole world on, no matter what they think.

11 ( +12 / -1 )

China lost whole its credibility and thanks to Covid 19 the whole world can see now who they are. Such a bully and imperialistic tyranny. Taiwan can count on support of all freedom loving counties

11 ( +11 / -0 )

"This can only seriously undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and bring down a terrible disaster on the Taiwanese people."

The only one undermining peace and stability and bringing aggression into the area is china!!

"Almost 40 Chinese warplanes breach Taiwan Strait median line;"

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/09/21/asia/taiwan-china-warplanes-median-line-intl-hnk-scli/index.html

Taiwan has never been under the control of the CCP, so it is not chinese territory!!

Taiwan is an independent country!!!

10 ( +11 / -1 )

And for any Chinese that may read this, Taiwan is a country

Hell yeah!

9 ( +11 / -2 )

China will do little as it is not able to carry out its threat

9 ( +9 / -0 )

Bring it on. The rest of the freedom-loving world is standing up alongside the US if the Commies try anything. Theyd be wiped off the map.

What right does Communist China have to stop democratic Taiwan from buying weapons to defend herself from a big bully? I hope Japan will also sell weapons to Taiwan in near future, as they do to Vietnam.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

the Chinese Cabinet's Taiwan Affairs Office demanded Tsai's Democratic People's Party end its “plotting" with the U.S. to “refuse unification through arms."

And China isn't "plotting" to invade Taiwan?

China regards Taiwan as its own territory to be annexed by force if necessary

The CCP are hypocritical thugs. Nazis of the 21st Century who need to be treated as such.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

China will do little as it is not able to carry out its threat

indeed. but China will likely do as much as possible without actually stepping into a physical shootout with taiwain/US

Well, I'd take them at their word....

They may send us more Trump Collection shirts, ties, and bags...made in their sweatshop factories...

That's the same as sending us toxic waste....

What with Beijing's bellicose blusterings, Taiwan is going to need all the military hardware it can get. Since Biden lacks the bollocks to stand up to China, Taiwan is going to be hoping like mad that American voters have the sense to re-elect Trump in a couple of weeks.

Sentaor Joe Biden voted for the Taiwan Relations Act back in 1979 and the Taiwan Security Enhancement Act in 1999 under which all sales of military assets to Taiwan are authorized.

The U.S, position towards China's territorial expansion and threat towards Taiwan is bipartisan. Under a Biden administration you can expect a reinforced NATO and QUAD.

During the Cold War with the USSR, I saw a slogan that I thought wrapped up the essence of what was wrong with the USSR's policies: "If things are so great in the USSR, why don't they build windows, instead of walls?"

Likewise, if things were great in China, Taiwan would be asking to join them, not trying to protect themselves from aggression. That Xi is being so desperately aggressive with Taiwan betrays the lack of appeal of the Chinese model. He should be enticing them with honey, not threatening them with vinegar.

Shocking how imperialistic China prepares for war

5 ( +6 / -1 )

The CCP has NO RIGHT to "rule" or "control" the government and land of Taiwan. If the CCP has the brains to pay attention, they ruined their own credibility with how they screwed up HONG KONG, and their own handling of CREATING A PANDEMIC due to their own corrupt selfish arrogant INCOMPETENCE! CCP is a PARTY BEFORE COUNTRY authoritarian regime, and centralizes control amongst Chinas political "elite" that lacks the ability to understand what it needs to do to RESPECT ITS OWN CITIZENS/PEOPLE of their COUNTRY! And the stupid thing is... they want respect for themselves, but don't understand they have to respect others FIRST.

The CCP ONLY wants to rule over Taiwan to feel like they 100% won their civil war with the ROC. The world is not going to let them destroy Taiwan like the CCP has done to Tibet and especially Hong Kong. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!! Humanity is tired of this authoritarion dictator BS... it's the disgusting product of an uncivilized egomaniacal, selfish, arrogant group of humanity that believes they have more rights over other citizens of their own country.

Even if it means WW3 I take the LIBERTY OR DEATH to heart. Live free or die trying!

China will sell high tech military equipment to North Korea and perhaps to Cuba as well. Although once Biden gets in he should continue Obama's initiative to normalize relations between the US and Cuba. Perhaps military aid to Venezuela as well. It will find something that is designed to piss America off.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

I hope they go through with it.

You're gonna flip when you find out who runs Vietnam.

CCP is a PARTY BEFORE COUNTRY

Sadly that thinking is not isolated to China. In many, if not all multi party systems, the parties put themselves first. They all think their party is the best suited to lead their country and they act that way even if it hurts their country. Trump is case in point. Republicans would rather Have Trump as leader of the USA even after four years of disaster, than admit he should not get another four years to save the nation from further disasters. They hate democrats and would rather drive America into the dust, cover his crimes even when given a chance to hold him to account and retain leadership of the nation, than admit their chosen leader is inept and unable to lead. Even though privately many concede the point. Honest competent leadership is greatly lacking in the world today. It is needed to tackle pollution of the seas and air, climate change, mass extinctions. The world needs good leaders but sadly they are hard to find. Too hard it seems. One or two small nations have leaders that are admired but they have no power to make changes the world would follow. Not as long as so many leaders are there for the wrong reasons.

China vows retaliation if U.S. proceeds with Taiwan arms sale! Oh so the United States is really scared!!!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Reading Xi Jinping's public statements the last several years I am coming to the conclusion that Xi is getting the Chinese people and the various branches of the Chinese military ready for war with the US. It will be a surprise attack and a very big one too. I don't think enough Americans understand the size and quality of the Chinese military today. Their generals were watching CNN during Desert Storm and were astounded by what they saw. And frightened. But that experience has motivated them to rapidly modernize as they try to match every US capability and exceed them when possible. They have quality problems in some cases but by and large they have closed the gap on the US and probably represent an even greater threat than the old USSR. The USSR never had as good a surface navy as the Chinese and I would argue the Chinese have a better air force too. A tangle with China won't be anywhere near as easy as defeating Iraq was. The US public has become used to the US having complete air superiority over its enemies and to fighting enemies who cannot threaten US cities. Neither will be the case in a war with China.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

China doesn't want war. They just want their way without any opposition.

There will come a time, when someone will stand up to China, probably a smaller country in a defense pak just to see what happens. Every time Chinese military makes a dash towards Japanese or Taiwanese waters, those countries need to be there with defensive forces, until one day, ooops. Splash 2.

What’s China going to do - export another virus leading to the death of hundreds of thousands more Americans? I doubt Americans think much about the CCP’s threats anymore.

...And the beat goes on. Live long "Never China". Stand strong, the free world stands with you.

China could break the US embargo on trading with Iran and go back to guying Iranian oil and selling military equipment to them also. A move sure to upset Trump to the max.

shere will come a time, when someone will stand up to China, probably a smaller country in a defense pak just to see what happens. Every time Chinese military makes a dash towards Japanese or Taiwanese waters, those countries need to be there with defensive forces, until one day, ooops. Splash 2

In the 1950s and into the early 1960s there were daily dogfights between PLAAF and ROC fighters over the Taiwan Strait. The only nations I see today that would actually fire at Chinese forces that threaten them are the US and maybe Vietnam if pushed hard enough. Every other nation is simply too afraid. I remember a couple of occasions when the JASDF fired warning shots at Soviet bombers well inside Japanese airspace. Not sure how Japan would handle a direct territorial challenge today. I think the US feels that if they simply must engage a Chinese force anything short of the complete destruction of the Chinese force would only serve to egg the Chinese on. I am still not so sure the Chinese won't attack if they feel they have the upper hand. It is up to the US, Japan and their allies to possess enough military power to give the Chinese a reason not to consider an attack.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

you hope the arms sale goes ahead,

Yes.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I'm curious what kind of retaliation the Chinese could engage in. The sale will undoubtedly be completed regardless of who wins the November 3rd election. Defending Taiwan is about as bipartisan as matters get in the US Congress. So what can China do to retaliate? Ban the sale of Boeing airliners? Maybe, but could Airbus take up the slack? And will that COMAC thing they have been working on for over a decade ever entice any customers outside of China? And if China banned the purchase of Boeing aircraft, would the US FAA certify that COMAC thing and permit it to even overfly much less land in the US? How about banning FedEx and UPS? I don't think Chinese companies would like that very much. Force Walmart, Costco, KFC and/or Starbucks to close? Shut down US brand auto manufacturers? No, that would hurt their domestic partners those auto makers were forced to take on. Kind of laughable. I don't see that China has a lot of levers to pull that don't also hurt China as much or more than they hurt the US.

And the doomsday clock ticks ever forward..

Does nobody else remember that both the US and China are nuclear powers, and that a war between the two means the end of life on the planet as we know it?

Doesn't matter whose side you are on - EVERYBODY loses if those two go to war.

Not good.

China are acting like a baby more and more, they refuse to understand that ethnic Chinese don't want communist overlords.

I think you mean they don't want authoritarian/totalitarian overlords. China isn't really communist.

The Nation of Taiwan is a happy successful Democracy they don't want a leader for life nor social points or re education camps. They are happy and that makes China mad.

Well, I guess - but Taiwan's history (post WW2) wasn't so happy, martial law, KMT corruption and severe struggles with democracy for decades.

Like most here, I wish to see an independent Taiwan, free from Beijing and Washington meddling but let's not forget the past.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I hope they go through with it

Can you clarify - you hope the arms sale goes ahead, or that China retaliates?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

China has decided to impose sanctions on US entities participating in selling arms to Taiwan including Lockheed Martin, Boeing Defense and Raytheon, as well as related individuals and entities that played a negative role during the sales process, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Monday.

https://global.chinadaily.com.cn/a/202010/26/WS5f9681eda31024ad0ba81048.html

I dont think many US defense firms do business with or through China so these sanctions will be irrelevant to the US.

With Hunter (Gatherers) lucrative connections to the CCP? Only in your dreams. Biden would not stand up to the CCP.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

Failure to do so would “compel the Chinese side to fight back resolutely,” the statement said.

Call their bluff and proceed with arms sales. Luckily, Trump will do that. In the sad case that Biden wins, weep for Taiwan.

This gives me the feeling that the world is being set up for WWIII. Nobody will survive.
