Comparing it to 9/11 might be a bit much, but horrible stuff all the same. Hope they catch the others involved, though I have to say that given China is pretty merciless in its punishment in general, I wonder what 'tough punishment' would entail.

Perhaps if they inact tough new knife regulations. Maybe that will work...

I've been to Kunming and this is really terrible to happen to such a peaceful city.

If this has to do with the Uygher region, then China is getting a come-back for usurping their land. I just recently heard the comments of a woman who was kidnapped with her husband by an Islamic separatist group in the Phillipines that said the way the extremist think is that when they happen to kill fellow muslims in the process of terrorist acts, "It was their destiny and Allah's will" but when someone who is not muslim kills or takes the "property" of a muslim it is considered the utmost heinous act to them... sick and twisted thinking but China made the first move with their land grabbing of late. And due to that I'd expect more "insurgents" who are not Uyghur will be coming to China soon and committing more of these types of acts.

In an emailed statement, Dilshat Raxit of the exiled World Uyghur Congress said there was “no justification for attacks on civilians” but added that discriminatory and repressive policies provoked “extreme measures” in response.

I think Dilshat Raxit just justified the violence, and thus refuted his own comment in one single statement.

Well this gives the Chinese government an excuse to put the hammer down.

Did these people think hard enough before they committed such a crime, killing innocent civilians? From now on where can they hide? ( "they" means all Uyghur in China) , how can they just walk on the streets ? Chinese government is no angel ,but killing innocent people indiscriminately like this is just pure suicidal. Especially there is no free press in China.

If this is some sarcastic comment about gun control, I ask you how many more people would be dead if there were guns involved.

These terrorists are murderers who deserve the worst punishment. The only problem is that in the Muslim world they become martyrs! The world we live in unfortunately will witness very many more such acts throughout the world! And unfortunately, unfortunately they will also have supporters.

Uyghur is China's Afghanistan.
