I've been w/ this from the "get go", and remember something someone said in the early/mid 1990's:

we have reached takeoff position, and now, nothing can stop us.

I had doubts, but sure enough, the PRC economy had a vertical ascent after that. The people guiding the economy, and they know who they are, made no major mistakes and brilliant in execution. 8% GDP THIS year alone is amazing! Their ascent has been breathtaking and they earned it.

Way to go , to China and its expansion of its GDP.

China has to have 8% growth or else they will fall into civil unrest. It's kind of the magic number for them....

You'd think there would be a lot more chest thumping.....but telling people to stay at home and watch it on TV? Others using the anniversary to criticize China? Wasn't expecting that....

Sooner or later those awesome fire power of China will inevitably have to find way to establish, again, its owner position as Middle Kingdom like it used to be in the past. They didn't call it Chugoku for nothing. Be prepared, and stop calling China "developing country", it is just ridiculous.

Overrated! Thats what I say! The military and space program they can thank Russia for that!, The economy they can thank all the money grubbing multi- national companies setting up shop giving them all the know how just for the cheap labor, this years 8 percent growth is just smoke and mirrors and its from the money from their stimulus plan, funny how it just hit that magic number 8. They have way to many problems there to be called developed, I know I lived there, give them another 50 years and maybe if they dont implode first.

"if they dont implode first.": No they will export those "explosives" to neighbouring countries and weaker nations around the world.Ask Burma ,Vietnam, African countries...

Happy 60th, China! Majority of the world supports you.

Military hardware and economic growth are only few things that factor into a powerhouse country. China woefully lags in world name brands that get people excited and giving freedom of choice for all. Happy 60th but lopsided. Let's see what happens.

all the progress in the world can't buy you good manners

I would like to see the parade. will they show it on Japanese TV?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

staging its biggest-ever parade of military hardware with over 100,000 marching masses in a display that stirred patriotism

China has better things to display to the world other then it's military hardware.

if mao hadn't rule china ,China willn't world's NO3 GDP.and world 2d most powerful country.

Considering the great leap forward and cultural revolution set China back years and killed tens of millions of Chinese, China could have been a lot farther ahead now, with more of it's old history intact.

i'd be more supportive of china, if they'd a) stop selling weapons in civil unrest hotspots in africa and b)their immigration officers stopped throwing african visa-overstayers from 2nd-storey windows onto their heads.

There are plenty of mainland Chinese who have deeply critical things to say about the situation; those unafraid of speaking up, in spite of the consequences, are truly worth their ownership of Chinese pride. Don't get so caught up in the jingoism and fervour that you cannot turn a critical eye inward.

As noted in the article, there are still tremendously stark economic inequalities in its populace and graft amongst the highest levels of political office, amongst all the other troubling social aspects. China still has a very long way to go, and it's my hope that the world will firm its resolve and hold it accountable.

tclh: and stop calling China "developing country", it is just ridiculous.

Take a train ride through China and then tell me the "developing nation" tag isn't appropriate... I went from Tianjin to Beijing to Xian then down to Hong Kong. Let's just say their $2 trillion reserves probably won't even cover adding basic structures outside of the main city centers in the country such as paved roads, let alone an unemployment or social security or health care system for the entire nation, something they haven't really done to any extent. The overall GDP is just a numbers game, the per capita figures are still extremely low.

The per capita figures in China is around $2,800 per person, about ten times less than Japan. However, Japan has around 20,000 companies in China and they are the biggest trade partner. Japan depends immensley on cheap quality manufacturing labors from China. Even with the difficult history between two countries, they have to both move forward for better mutual understandings and respect. Japan will continue to have stagnent economy and China even with bad worldwide economy still grows at 7 percent GDP. They are smart and serious competitor.

60th anniversary is ironic since its reported he had a hand in killing 60 million of his own countrymen. That's twice as many as Stalin and 10 times as many as Hitler...

When you count everythibg about China: chinese people worldwide, china natural resources, china industries ,china economy, china millitary capability...etc etc, all I can see is an emerging super power! Low income so what? everything is much cheaper there.

I saw the videos of the parade and was struck by how communist looking it was. A bit of a turnoff but then again the parade is mostly about praising their communist system.

Anyways, their equipment was reasonably impressive. They showcased the DH-10 LACM, with a range of 2,500 miles, along with the DF-21, a ASBM designed to target aircraft carriers. Another ICBM, the truck launchable DF-31, was also on display.

It appears that they have produced a nice array of offensive platforms.
