"China, which publicly announced around 50 separate naval exercises in the seas off its coast over the past two years—usually after the event—says its military is only focused on defending the country’s territory"

This is true. But the fact that China seems to consider all of Asia as it's territory is what's worrying it's neighbors.

All this war mongering rhetoric, what is the purpose of war ?? A war starts,a lot of people die,war ends, life goes on as it was before, for what??. Just to make those all mighty defence manufacturers richer. Politicians worldwide should concentrate on their own countries and the welfare of their own people. War is just a distraction from their own failures. In my lifetime their has been conflicts somewhere in the world for every day of my life, not one day where the whole of the world has been at peace.

"Beijing only confirmed this year that it was revamping the old Soviet ship and has repeatedly insisted that the carrier poses no threat to its neighbors and will be used mainly for training and research purposes."

Oh yeah !!!!! So why are you getting ready for military combat..... hehehe In my opinion, people who talk about preparation for military combat are nothing but propagandas. The next world war is the end of earth. Loss loss situation. Everybody dies with nukes bombardment and radiations. To China, just keep on producing cheap products, sell it to all corners of the world and keep on enriching yourselves. And that's the best way for your dreams of controlling the world to come true instead by military forces. No need to use territorial disputes as your alibi for building military powers. Just adhere to territorial waters' boundary laws and just split that Sparaty Islands to whoever country it belongs. I don't know about Vietnam, but the Philippines has no match with China's militrary powers. Checking the maps, the nearest island close to Spratly is PALAWAN which is Philippines. China is way. way up farther than Vietnam and Malaysia. Just the name South China Sea doesn't mean possession. It can also be called North Philippine Sea. This dispute is a job for The United Nations. Knock, knock, anyone there at UN?

Chinese President Hu Jintao on Tuesday urged the navy to prepare for military combat, amid growing regional tensions over maritime disputes and a U.S. campaign to assert itself as a Pacific power.

The US has been a Pacific power since the end of WWII. The writer of the article could have stated that the US is relatively weaker in the region than it used to be and is attempting to "re-assert" itself in the region. This is lazy journalism.

The Chinese military exist for one purpose, to keep a billion peasants at bay from the thriving coastal cities...

I know at times we have all found common ground and at times head to head with each other over anything and everything. I'm not going to point any fingers but I sense a lot of "bloodlust" here.

These comments like "Come on" and "Bring it" are pugnacious and it seems your lust for blood won't be sated till you see some action.

I have to say this to the Chinese and Japanese and anyone else who wants to see the ocean red. None of you have the stomach for what you desire. Most of you will vomit at the sight of blood and death, mixed with the venom of hate.

You know not what you wish for. This is planet Earth and we better start sharing it. You had better wave "Hi" to your neighbors and forgive those who trespass against you.

Those who have dined with the devil have lost their appetite. Death is an acquired taste. Few can stomach it.

@issa1: Unfortunately, only a war will restore the Japan of the Meiji period and the respect that,we deserve it

I hope you're being sarcastic. What is wrong with peace?

Listen, war solves nothing and it is an uncivilized tool of aggression. The only thing to come out of war is fear, death and destruction... Given the choice I choose the Matrix :)

China's economy is slowing down or US wants to divert public attention from Wallstreet Protests that's getting huge momentum.

It's not the U.S. who's rattling the sabres here.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

the carrier poses no threat to its neighbors and will be used mainly for training and research purposes.

Getting tired of the weak rhetorical BS that the Chinese govt. keeps publishing. It's a warship, one that they lied to the Ukrainians about when they purchased it and one that they copied Russian SU-27K fighters to outfit it with. The Chinese are out for blood and when the storm comes, America might not be pushed back to Pusan like 51' but driven out of the Pacific entirely

3 ( +4 / -1 )

But last week he said the carrier was strictly for defense.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

"People's Liberation Army, the largest military in the world"

Yeah, but it's much cheaper than the second largest military in the world.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

If I remember it right China said their military is for peaceful purposes? Or it will make some military personnel rest in peace? Now it shows how arrogant this country is (not the people). When they say combat, I think it literally means "to kill." When are guns for peaceful purposes anyway?

2 ( +5 / -3 )

"America might not be pushed back to Pusan like 51' but driven out of the Pacific entirely..."

Nonsense. China is very far from asserting that much naval power in the Pacific. If they do approach that level, you can be sure that South Korea, Japan and other regional states will also step up naval warfare capabilities alongside the US for a block of allies that would make any such vision very hard for China to realize.

We can blame the corporates for much of this. Their trying to make a buck in China is feeding that nation's ability to build weapons and project power. It is something we will very soon regret.

Thankfully the working people of China are just as screwed by capitalism as the rest of us world wide. We should keep this in mind as the people of China are the greatest potential thwart to Chinese agression that exists today. They may well rise up in protest over the growing gap between haves and have nots in China. Not to mention their bubble that may soon burst.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

...and a U.S. campaign to assert itself as a Pacific power.

The U.S. has been a Pacific power since 1898, at the latest.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@tkoind2

Thankfully the working people of China are just as screwed by capitalism as the rest of us world wide

Yes, very true, but keep in mind, the 1% that control everything, don't give a damn about what the 99% think, and Beijing has shown in the past, they will use their own military against their own people, I.E... Tiananmen Square 1989

2 ( +2 / -0 )

what?! WW3?! iran making atomic bombs with the help of north k now this??!! WTF

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@tkoind2

America might not be pushed back to Pusan like 51' but driven out of the Pacific entirely...

Definitely not this decade, but as time goes on the chances for uncertainty go up. The Chinese eventually want to push their sphere of influence out to Guam. That leaves S.Korea, Japan, and all US forward bases in the Pacific directly in conflict with Chinese aspirations. If we remember correctly, the impetus for Pearl Harbor (funny that this is posted on Dec 7th) was the Japanese desire for material resources and the fact that the US stood in the way of Pacific domination.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Canada sells them all that oil.Australianers sell em iron ore and other natural resuorces. What are the Chinese supposed to do? Use the stuff to improve the lot of the peasants? Not much glory in that.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

I thought the end of the world in 2012 would start in the middle east and not in the east

2 ( +2 / -0 )

China is the so called paper Tiger, the more this country, China tries to assert power in Asia, the more the rest of Asia and the rest of the world will turn around and boycott them, or turn to the USA etc..to keep the Chinese from invading their land, their waters etc..just look at Vietnam. Sure the USA and VIetnam had a horrible war, but now HANOI is asking the US Navy to come and hold military runs there, and the Vietnamese people understand how to deal with the Chinese, they have been trying to keep them away for over 2 THOUSAND YEARS!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

It's just a routine statement. The media are tying it in with the regional tensions to reate a more entertaining story.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

China, you see, normally keeps its navy un-prepared for combat.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Don't worry, anything made in China is cheap crap and unreliable. We all know this from first hand experience.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

YuriOtani

Come on China, we are waiting for you. Attack Japan and we will put all of the attacking Chinese fleet on the bottom. Their air force would be at the limits of its range, it will be a turkey shoot.

Hey Yuri are you really that confident, you expect your 370 fighters (minus the dozen lost in the tsunami) to stand any chance against the 900 + chinese fighters and 400+ chinese attack aircraft and bombers. Especially when 100 of your planes are 1960's era F-4's and 150 of them are F-15 who have bits fall off them mid flight are repeated grounded and just crash when they feel like it. Yeah good luck with your wishes l for one wont be in Japan when the you know what hits the fan. But l guess you can scream for help from the US, oh thats right you want their bases closed oops where are they going to fly from? AH KARMA....

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I may be wrong, but China has nothing to gain with outright aggression escalating in an armed conflict. Why? Because there overseas markets will dry up instantly.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

since WWII, i wonder which country has been in more combat arenas - USA or China?

MaotseTung was too busy killing at home to be doin much of it abroad. Duh.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Those that think that the US and China will fight each other had best take a deep breath and relax. The US and China are bound together economically to a point that you could say the two economies are Siamese twins. There is no way for one to untangle from the other without wrecking their own economy. China will puff its chest out and make some moves to show that it now should be taken seriously but life will go on and the EEZ disputes in the South China Sea will be resolved peacefully. China and Japan will never fight each other directly as long as the US is still in Japan and even then they would not as the Japanese and Chinese economies are also very intertwined. That is the big difference between now and the 1930s. The world economies were not tied together and the resultant gap made for ratcheting up of tensions instead of a smoothing out of tensions. We, the world, has too much to lose to see two or three of its top economies go at each other. The various interest within each country would not allow it.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Either China's economy is slowing down or US wants to divert public attention from Wallstreet Protests that's getting huge momentum.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

How can China "accelerate its transformation and modernization in a sturdy way"? The whole world should be under protection of the US! Pls check Iraq, Afa.... etc.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

While noda visiting China - Chinese military invades senkaku- shoto. Seems a comedy movie.

Without wishing to offend the Germans with this comparison, but hittler did the same before invading Poland.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Come on China, you might as well go all out now and get it over with. Stop playing silly games now.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

You better pay attention to history. The Chinese won't make the same mistake as the Persians did. While the Spartans wait, the Chinese wait too. Since the Spartans have a thing for rage and bloodlust, they would become mad at the Chinese for waiting. Now, this is Sun Tzu's teachings, when your enemies are driven mad, they'll easily make mistakes. At the end the Spartans would take the fight to the Chinese.

Be nice to see use their navy against pirates! Drug dealers! And other scum in the high seas!!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

at least the US has a great chance to profit by selling old military stock to china just like the russians have done with the carrier.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Accelerate tin can commie technology and copied old soviet technology

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Spidapig24, if there is to be war China has to start it. As for aircraft the Chinese have to fly from China to Japan which will severely limit their loiter time. As for numbers the Israeli air force (American type) shot down the Syrian (soviet type) 50 to 1 during their last match. Next add the Americans and their air craft carrier force. Should be at least 2 arriving quickly and more arriving not long after. They will be in position out of range of the Chinese air force. True they are suppose to have an IRBM that can hit them but it is next to impossible to hit a moving target, do the math. Also it would be unwise to use that type of weapon. Too many fired and the USA may mistaken it for a nuke attack and fire back.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

China in the next decade is starting to sound like Japan was back in the 1930s....

" anything made in China is cheap crap and unreliable. We all know this from first hand experience "............................

if only it's that simple. Case in point, your I-phone etc. Components made in Korea, Japan etc etc and assembled ( made ) in China.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Spidapig24, the bases that "matter" is Kadena AFB, alone with White Beach. The big battle will be and air and naval battle in the Sea of Japan and South China Sea. The marine helicopters will be useful for air and sea rescue but if the Chinese land a signification force on Okinawa it is over. It is my wish our Chinese cousins think this through and do not go to war. They have almost nothing to gain and everything to lose. They have to settle for the "payback" done by the Americans to the Japanese nation.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

if only it's that simple. Case in point, your I-phone etc. Components made in Korea, Japan etc etc and assembled ( made ) in China.

While that may be true, when was the last time China actually improved on the design instead of just attempt the best copy they can make? China can copy as much as they want, they'll be dangerous when they finally learn to improve and come up with innovative designs of their own based on the tech they steal or buy.

"china has 50 modern war ships" LOL SO! we have alot more than that! besides economically it would ruin china people Would easly boycot them. its Asian neighbors DON'T want china in controll either. 7777 says (I also say look at Vietnam and NK. America didn`t win either of these wars with these tiny countries) we were NOT at war against these countries! but tried to help. in civil wars. 5 years after ww2 Proof that china is a Back stabber. LOOK at NK as far as thier life style! compared to south Korea! china impossed "communism" on them & the people still suffer to this day!

2012 promises to - smell of gunpowder in the air.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

It would be nice if China helped fight more against Somali pirates!!!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

You Chinese want both Senkaku Shoto, is not it? then, come get it - We look forward to welcome them.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

"China tries to assert power in Asia, the more the rest of Asia and the rest of the world will turn around and boycott them, or turn to the USA etc..to keep the Chinese from invading their land, their waters etc.."

Who is boycotting China? People complain all the time that all the jobs are going to China, everything is made in China, and gross human rights violations in China, but when it gets down to it most people are not boycotting. If people boycotted, the shelves in stores would be practically empty and what was left would be much higher priced than the boycotted items so even though people don`t like the idea of practically everything being made in China and they feel uncomfortable with China puffing its chest out more and showing off its muscles, the pocketbook speaks and people like the cheap prices too much to boycott.

Another thing is countries are tightly tied to China in banking, debts, industries, etc. So to just walk away, which may be what needs to be done, isnt that easy. To walk away means cutting MAJOR losses and the governments and companies are too invested that they arent willing to do that.

As for turning to the US, I think it is a gamble. One person in Obamas administration said her hero was chairman Mao; Obamas mentor was a staunch communist; and Obama allowed a Chinese pianst to come in the White House for an official event and play an anti-American, communist victory song, so Obamas loyalties may lean more to China based on these things. I honestly dont know how committed he would be to helping Japan or S. Korea if China struck. Also America is spread fairly thin right now military wise. Forces in a poor country like Afghanistan is a lot different than a full out war with China. With just Afghanistan it costs Americans millions of dollars and that doesnt count the military contributions from other countries. The economy in America keeps getting worse so I think it would be economically difficult for America to be fight a full blown war with China. I dont think Asia should be counting too much on America because America may not pull through.

You said look at Vietnam. I also say look at Vietnam and NK. America didn`t win either of these wars with these tiny countries. China is much more powerful.

Anyway, I dont think we should worry about the "what ifs" in life. China is undeniably showing aggression, but I hope good diplomatic measures will be taken to prevent anything from escalating. I never want my children to see or experience war so I hope leaders can be diplomatic enough to avoid trouble. The earthquake and nuclear disaster are more than enough trouble for me!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

I think Foxie makes an excellent point!!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Actually if all the navies joined forces to fight evil pirates etc...

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

anyway...the enemy is not the human race, its beyond...

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

I smell war and greedy like the "OLD JAPAN".....

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

If the ships are made in china, they'd probably sink.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

all nations should start building up their military, it's very good for business. Might just be the " jump start " we need for the economy.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

If the ships are made in china, they'd probably sink.

are you referring to the ones you play with during bath time? anyway, it's time you get out of your parent's basement.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

MaotseTung was too busy killing at home to be doin much of it abroad. Duh.

so china hasn't actually had more external combat/invasions of foreign territories than the usa then right?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I like China to be honest. Its like a place that has so much potential but its going to waste on the wrong type of people (thanks the gov.). Just like the US, there is potential that is actually being used, but also is being thwarted by stupid greedy egotistical people. It most certainly would not benefit China at all for them to start a war, or become more aggressive since once they do a lot of their neighbors will really be peeved off at them and many countries they have to import stuff from will drop them along with sanctions.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

It this then, do not waste time and show me your true face. These politicians of dpj that has strong links with the Chinese will be in a trouble, are not going to get more cover up their lies and The war will be a good business to Japan, so we can move on to clean this country.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

As I stated many times, all civilized nations need to work together to isolate CHINA!! If we don't do it now, it will be too late in 2 years!! When China is isolated, their people will not get high tech products from us, and they will overthrow their government and beg for our forgiviness!!!

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

If I remember it right China said their military is for peaceful purposes? Or it will make some military personnel rest in peace? Now it shows how arrogant this country is (not the people). When they say combat, I think it literally means "to kill." When are guns for peaceful purposes anyway?

Who cares about journalism. Can you print WWIII in the making.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Unfortunately, only a war will restore the Japan of the Meiji period and the respect that,we deserve it . This will set us free from this tie that Americans have imposed on us. Changing our constitution now !
