Love how a Chinese ship in the Sea of Japan is 'long-distance' but American ships in the same place somehow don't rate that description.

The beginning.

but American ships in the same place somehow don't rate that description.

if its international waters then its fine, in Japanese water then most likely at Japans invitation,

Taiwan straight is international waters

Are there any islands or reefs for China to claim and build upon in the Sea of Japan?

‘Lhasa’ sounds like it’s a Tibetan ship.

That would be like Russia naming a ship Kiev. Strange.

My first thought also, but football fan mentalities have some difficulty with the obvious if it conflicts with their programed perceptions and have no capacity to see anything but the insides of their own heads. My Team! My Team! My Team! Right or WRONG! Sadly, it's our lot to be part of such a species and have to watch it as its most pathological elements control these minds and, for GREED, do nothing but mass murder of ITSELF, Mankind's most distinguishing characteristic in the animal world... Homo sapiens was murdered long ago and Homo DEMENS rules our ongoing autoextinction.

A bit of trivia. The USSR once did have a carrier called Kiev. In her day, she was the biggest carrier in the world.

The USSR, not russia. You're making the same mistake Putler is making. The USSR and russia are not the same.

Those ships have been growing in sophistication as well, with the Type 055, also known as the Nanchang class, featuring a stealthy design and packing air-defense missiles and anti-ship and anti-land cruise missiles, as well as torpedoes.

Speculation is rife about whether the US Navy’s recently unveiled concept of a next-generation destroyer — DDG(X)— is based on China’s Type 055 guided-missile destroyer.

Fortunately we have a resident expert here. Desert Tortoise, any truth to the above?

I know that the US has claimed that the waters that lie between the Chinese provinces of Fujian and Taiwan are international waters, but though my naval law expert died a couple of years ago, I'm sure that the actual laws of the seas DON'T support such a claim.

Of course, seeing as she lived on the coast of British Columbia where the US claims that the waters between two parts of that Canadian province are international waters, I also know that having the facts against them never deters the US from making such claims.

I have to agree. As long as China isn't fishing inside Japan's EEZ or within the 12nm limits, it is called "freedom of navigation" regardless of which Navy does it.

I suppose the US should claim all waters between Hawaii and California? Or Guam and Hawaii? That's the way China seems to think.

The USSR once did have a carrier called Kiev. In her day, she was the biggest carrier in the world.

The Kiev was owned by Russia after the USSR broke up. It was retired in 1993.

Strangely, it is listed as an exhibit/hotel in Tianjin, China. after millions in renovations. 39.155N, 117.808E are the GPS coordinates. Looks like tennis or basketball courts are on the flight deck now.

Thanks for the information.

In the days of the Kiev, Russia was the area of the USSR that was in the continent of Europe.

Japan should play tit-for-tat. Or just have the Izumo visit Taiwan.

No. If anything the DDG(X) design is driven by its radars, future weapons and integrated power system. You could say the increasingly sophisticated Chines A2/AD threat and development of aircraft carriers and their air wings drives the design but it won't be a copy of any other navy's ship. I would say the Type 055 is a more capable enlarged Type 054D, which is itself sort of a copy of an Arleigh Burke Flight IIA.

The power plants on the Chinese ships are much like that of a Burke, Ticonderoga or Spruance class. DDG(X) will have something very different which will probably include electric drive similar to the Zumwalt class since a distributed electrical system seems to be part of the plan for them. When you do that you don't have to put the power generating gas turbines in the hull to facilitate reduction gears and shafting. You can put the gas turbines in the superstructure at main deck level to reduce the volume lost to intake and exhaust ducting, ease removal for overhaul and provide better compartmentation of the hull. I'm not involved in that ship but I know that is the direction the US Navy is going.

"It's time to quell the US Democrats witch hunts of the 1960's and put the Just and Rightful President back where he belongs in order to avoid WW3."

Groveling to the Russians guarantees WW3.

I think a joint naval visit by US and Japanese warships would be a great idea, but have a carrier strike group standing off to the east, just in case.

Question for Desert on the topic of surface combatants:

I would like to know what happened to the rail gun idea on the Zumwalt class. The idea seemed so promising.

(Only tangentially off topic as it is related to the topic of Chinese warships. I would beg the Moderator’s indulgence.)
