China is never going to use its military to "invade" Taiwan. The US knows this too but it doesn't fit well with the "yellow menace" in the east mantra and the need for an ever bigger military budget.

Communist China (wrongly) considers Taiwan to be part of her territory. They would have no hesitation in invading Taiwan, just as they have Tibet, and taken control of Hong Kong well before they legally were permitted. China would almost certainly do this for internal reasons, with Xi desperate to project a "strongman" image to Chinese people.

Make no mistake : invade Taiwan, and China will be very sorry. US Military are already there waiting, and if they are in any way attacked, the free world (QUAD, AUKUS, the EU, Japan and more) will be there in a heartbeat.

Irrelevant, as it is not up to the UN what sovereign nations do. Resolutions are ignored as often as they are followed. If that is the strength of China's planing then it could be in for quite a shock.

China isn't going to attack and murder people who they claim are their own. They'll wait and support some complete fool on a popularity wave into office and have them hand over everyone's future, just as they did in Hong Kong nearly a quarter of a century ago. If they were to lose patients and launch an invasion inflicting massive casualties on a civilian population there's the possibility that it would unleashed civil unrest on the mainland questioning communist rule or bring about a response from the apparatsia leading to their own arrests and prosecution for crime's against the people.

The latest survey in Taiwan showed that only 1.5% of the population wanted a complete joining with the mainland.... But also only 5.6% wanted independence. So what of the vast majority, the other 87%....

They want the status quo to continue, China is also happy with this. Taiwan, its people and economy are so interwoven with the mainland. The Taiwan economy would collapse without China and its pool of cheaper labor. China hasn't changed its stance on Taiwan, its the US that wants any excuse to pressure China for its home news consumption... Always needing a threat.

The US military is good for destabilize nations rather than building something good…take a look at the Middle East! Why are you mentioning Japan when the current constitution in Japan doesn’t permit military action! The US couldn’t even win from the taliban who had no nuclear capabilities and no advanced weapons! Trump signed a deal with them because he knew the US will never win! Biden implemented the deal because he also knows that! Vietnam war was also a big failure for the US. Iraq war destabilized the entire Middle East and gave rise to terror groups…another US failure! Your arrogance about the strength of the US military is plain crap because China is a no pushover with nuclear capabilities and Russia will always parter up with China in case of a war!

That has nothing to do with Winter Olympics. Switching back to normal the diplomatic ties would be the appropriate and necessary international answer. Remember, the ROC was a founding U.N. member, not the PRC.

I used to think Taiwan was the line in the dirt. But, there really isn't much that can be done if China decides to invade.
