Thanks, Tex! By the way, 'member how all those right wingers criticized Obama about the so-called "red lines" he'd set during the Syrian civil war? Well, Obama might not have been able to deliver what he'd sought (granted, the situation was fractured, and he was not willing to commit many US resources), but if China makes any move towards Taiwan, Trump will turn tail in an instant.

I guess this because, although he's an idiot with zero desire to learn, he's not suicidal. If China wants to take Taiwan by military force, that is what they will do, and now power in the world can stop them. The key success in Sino-American relations has been to prevent China from feeling the need to take Taiwan - the luxury of time, of allowing history to take its course, something that people on both sides of the strait deeply appreciate. Again, I assume Trump won't screw this up, but not because he's any kind of genius; just the opposite: he's too greedy to start a war with China, and too stupid to negotiate any other option than the status quo.

This idiot and his Twitter account are going to get people killed.

This idiot is going to needlessly start a war.

Although I agree that China should never be allowed to annex Taiwan, which is about as foreign as you can get nowadays to mainland China, I think Trump needs to be careful with his casual rhetoric and baiting of China over Taiwan, which they likely consider a war or peace issue.

Cheap media soundbites and vague patriotic noises aimed at uneducated Rubes back in America might be useful for keeping the sheep in check, but in the real world could have disastrous consequences

"Note to China: There's a new sheriff in town and its not going to be business as usual anymore..."

Trump talks out of his rusty sheriff's badge. As dcog9065 pointed out, this kind of posturing may get some people whooping in the US ( your Wild West image is an example ) but he really does need to think carefully or be told to shut up by more sober minds.

It really shows how successful Chinese propaganda has been when people think America is being the aggressor by simply recognizing the practical reality that Taiwan is a separate country. This is not controversial for anyone in the reality based community.

Trump is simply pointing out that the Emperor has no clothes when it comes to the one China policy. Sometimes it takes a child or an idiot like Trump to point out what smart people refuse to say in polite company. This is long overdue and very refreshing. Words and the truth are not bombs or war. The only idiots who are likely to start an actual needless war over this are the idiots in Beijing. Any criticism for ratcheting up the tensions on this issue over decades should be directed at them. They are the ones acting absurdly and demanding that we all play along.

The man who campaigned on isolationism and promises to stay out of other peoples' business just stuck his nose in other peoples' business and now he's got one of those countries talking about funding America's enemies.

And the worst part is, he didn't do it because of a principled, moral stance. He didn't do it because he has thought through an excellent strategy for winning the conflict. He did it because he got criticized for taking a congratulatory phone call and he can't stand it. His constant need for personal validation is literally pushing us closer to war.

Trump said in a Fox News interview:

I don’t know why we have to be bound by a ‘One China’ policy unless we make a deal with China having to do with other things, including trade.

There are three serious problems with this statement. First, Trump is tying Taiwanese democratic aspirations to Trump's trade goals - in other words, their future is fungible, able to be traded for Trump's ambitions. Second, anyone with an ounce of knowledge of China knows that this is not a negotiable topic. Taiwan may eventually turn their de facto independence into on internationally recognized, but that is for the two sides to negotiate. Finally - what kind of boneheaded moron would make such a statement?! Not only does it reveal a complete lack of situational awareness, it is dangerous to the people living in Taiwan. No polls have been released yet, but my guess is that most Taiwanese would wish Trump would just shut the hell up.

Li says it best:

“He’s very fickle as well, he may eat his words sometime soon.”

We've already seen him climb down on obvious nonsense like sending Hillary Clinton to jail, the preposterous "wall" with Mexico that might now be a "fence" (before being forgotten altogether) etc.

Donny's out of his depth. That's plain to see. How much will we all have to suffer because of it? That's the 64 million dollar question.

We should make a song about. "nobody can control Trump". I agree with Trump, Why does USA have to do what China says. Taiwan have millions of people they should be recognized

This is where you are going to see even more problems with Trump as president. The man can't even take a modicum of criticism from comedy shows and critics in his own nation; he'll go ballistic -- perhaps literally -- if a nation he always feels a bizarre inferiority complex and hatred towards criticizes him. Mom and Dad might have to take Twitter away from the child again.

"Li Haidong (poor fellow) doesn't have an option not to be hostile to Trump as he doesn't live in a country where there is free speech and democracy.Li Haiding has not had the pleasure of ever taken part in a free and fair election."

One can only wonder about the bafflement of people living in dictatorships about an election where the loser got more votes than the winner.

Funny thing this free and fair election malarkey.

United States of North waged civil war against confederate states of South such as Texas for prevention of disintegration 160 years ago. South was crushed and defeated by North. Successive US presidents since Jiimy Cater followed Lincoln model for United States of China as illusion. As a WWII ally, US has moral responsibility for defending Taiwan if PRC will use force. According PRC and ROC or Taiwan constitution, there is one only one China with different political party. US wants to keep that status quo of different interpretation as far as both sides not killing each other.

Reality is US struggled to defeat China peasant army who used bamboo sticks and cleavers during Korean War. Back then China was poor and backward. Gerneral Douglass MacArthur even requested for using nukes from President Truman. Truman sacked MacArthur. One China policy likes a Romance fiction against the reality. It is not perfect. It has preserved peace and stability. Everyone will live happily after.

If Trump is not happy, he is nothing different from war monger Bush Jnr who waged Irag with Saddam Hussein WMD. He is the dumbest President for twisting very effective diplomatic protocol,

love it! china can shove their inferiority complex

The US isn't doing what China says. We have agreements in place with them. If Trump wants to renegotiate, that's his choice, but that also opens the door for China renegotiate. But it's a lot more complex than "Why should I...?"

Li Haidong (poor fellow) doesn't have an option not to be hostile to Trump as he doesn't live in a country where there is free speech and democracy.Li Haiding has not had the pleasure of ever taken part in a free and fair election. However, I'm sure the irony in his comments is lost on him.....

Note to China: There's a new sheriff in town and its not going to be business as usual anymore...

Zenpun: Reality is US struggled to defeat China peasant army who used bamboo sticks and cleavers during Korean War.

Pure fantasy and propaganda. During the Korean War, China had weapons provided by Russia, captured Japanese weapons, and even weapons provided by the US during WWII. Russian and Chinese piloted fighter jets also provided air support. Prior to the Korean War, China had defeated and exiled the Nationalist military forces. Surely, they used weapons other than bamboo sticks, etc., when they defeated the Nationalists.

The one-China policy cannot be traded

That's a position that makes any kind of progress difficult if not impossible.

He’s very fickle as well, he may eat his words sometime soon.

Could that be read as a glimmer of hope? By making out that Trump's words can't be taken seriously, it gives Trump some leeway to say what would have been unspeakable by more conventionally-minded leaders. Having the one-China-two-Chinas topic somewhere in the public domain has to be a first step to any kind of solution.

One can only wonder about the bafflement of people living in dictatorships about an election where the loser got more votes than the winner.

Perhaps, Jimizo. But winning 30 states out of 50 seems a reasonable way to decide. Not that baffling, I think.

The only idiots who are likely to start an actual needless war over this are the idiots in Beijing.

This is what a lot of people with common sense, perhaps, are thinking, but are afraid to voice.

Having the one-China-two-Chinas topic somewhere in the public domain has to be a first step to any kind of solution

Add to that the issue of the unacceptable non-negotiable South China Sea hegemony aspirations. What is your reply to this, Mr. Li?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The CCP's "soft power" wasn't fooling anyone with their actions in Hong Kong, South China Sea etc... Pretty much the CCP is saying, "Either you'll let us take what we want underhandedly, or by force!"

I still don't believe Trump is the wisest man to be in place for such a situation, but China's CCP needs to be called out.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

But this time it warned that if Trump “openly abandons the one-China policy, there will be a real storm. At that point, what need does mainland China have for prioritising peaceful unification with Taiwan over retaking the island by military force?”

Well, if that happens, then there is also the option that China can get kicked out of the south China sea and contained, along with supporting the Taiwanese government (ROC) and getting the Hong Kong (SAR) and Tibet out from under the CCP.

If Clinton had got more votes then she would be getting ready to be the next President! However, this is not that alternate reality........

Chinese media warned Donald Trump Monday that the one-China policy is “non-negotiable” and dropping it could lead to Beijing supporting U.S. enemies -- article

The world's five top five military forces in terms of technology and firepower are:

1.) USA

2.) USA

3.) USA

4.) USA

5.) USA

China best be careful what they wish for. . . .
