After seeing Trump roll over on the Russian hacking issue, the Chinese probably see an opportunity.

the South China Seas are China's backyard - not the US's.....I wonder how the US would react if Chinese warships were prowling around in what it considers to be its backyard...

As usual, USA will start war far away. Japanese will pay the price.

Trump may be pres, but I very much doubt he can call a war. I'm sure the Senate or whatever their political system is would have to debate and vote on any such action. Trump isn't that popular even with his own party's senators.

I don't think so.

The only intelligent comment here.

Really? Didn't GWBush invade like 10 countries based on something he read on a bathroom wall?

I believe congressional approval is required for war. Part of the checks and balances. The one thing that is good is that trump and his party have a battle going on, which may limit some of the potential destruction.

After America's non-response to Syria, Ukraine, and then Syria again, China was always going to militarise the SC Sea, as they knew there is nothing anyone could do about it. Now it's too late and comments like that from Tillerson aren't helping anyone.

From the great inauguration ceremony playlist:

(South China Sea・Crimea・West Bank)

One of these land grabs is not like the others,

One of these land grabs just doesn't belong,

Can you tell which land grab is not like the others

By the time I finish my song?

Men will find a way to break the tyranny of the elite CCP.

Confrontation in South China Sea has the potential to lead to WW 3 among the countries in the region.

Probably, and with only losers in the end. But what will be crystal clear is who initiated it.

@dcog9065 - the USA doesn't have interests in Syria or Ukraine or many other parts of the world. The places local need to take up the fight for "good", whatever that means. BTW, my next door neighbors are Ukrainian. Nice people. They keep a very nice yard. ;)

In the Western Philippines Sea, the USA has interest thanks to our allies there. What happens there will be dependent on their goals.

Trump's nominee for Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on his confirmation hearing:

"China’s efforts to lay claim to the Senkaku or Diaoyu Islands were illegal actions. The island building in the South China Sea itself in many respects in my view is akin to Russia’s taking of Crimea."

So if one's against China's maritime takeovers, that one's gonna be against Russia's Crimea takeover. That's the Trump change.

@nostromo "the South China Seas are China's backyard"

No. the South China Sea is International Water. Not China's backyard.

after U.S. Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson suggested the strategy on Wednesday.

Boy, it's a good thing we didn't elect the warmonger.

Coming to a future near you:

"Comrade Supreme Commander, the Americans are starting to realize our involvement in their election!"

"It is no big thing. Tell the asset to instruct his underlings to begin a war with China."

Not war yet. US is too busy in confirmation procedure of Trump splinters. US senate and Congress will ddeclare war if necessary. But before that, US have to py huge debts to China. China had been rescuer of US money crisis.

Thanks for the reality check, Toshiko!

Is Trump's secret to #MAGA debt forgiveness by force?

toshiko: But before that, US have to py huge debts to China. China had been rescuer of US money crisis.

If a war starts, the USA could just write off all that Chinese-held debt.

Re Congress declaring war ...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_of_war_by_the_United_States#Other_undeclared_wars

... On at least 125 occasions, the President has acted without prior express military authorization from Congress. ...

including Obama's Libya War. 70 Democrats in the House voted against it (70 to 115).

... Obama explained his rationale in a two-page letter, stating that as commander in chief, he had constitutional authority to authorize the strikes, which would be limited in scope and duration, and necessary to prevent a humanitarian disaster in Libya. ...

Why is it now the Chinese have some money through the "cheap labor" they use all of a sudden they want to run the World?

This is a big news now. The news now shows the map of islands between Phillipin and China. Then US War hawks are on talks with Media. Seems Japan is behaving none of its business tight now. Other Asians? ?????

toshiko: Other Asians? ?????

China probably bought off Duterte. They're in the clear. At least he was talking pretty nicely when he visited there.
