Yup! Real unique! This old dude Eastwood now reminds me more of Homer Simpson's really old dad more than Dirty Harry! Mitt Romney has some funny ideas about the economy, politics, REALITY so hell no, my vote will never be wasted on old corrupt fools like these 2 bozos! But good for a laugh and bit of a break from all the other BS from the Republican convention. IMHO. Love that response to that silly empty chair, sorry dude THIS WHITE HOUSE CHAIR IS ALREADY TAKEN by our commander in chief, President Obama!

0 ( +11 / -12 )

The Dem convention should have an empty suit as a prop.

1 ( +9 / -7 )

The Obama campaign shot back afterward by tweeting a photo of the back of the president’s chair, with Obama’s head peeking over it, along with the line: “This seat’s taken.”

The response by Team Obama proves Clint's speech hit home.

RR

-22 ( +8 / -31 )

The speech was outstanding. It hit the mark on the true failures of the Obama administration over the past four years. It was funny however Clint was able to show exactly how Obama would answer tough questions on his own. Just a baby playing a mans game. The main issue? He may HAVE the seat but it's still just an EMPTY seat.

-18 ( +9 / -28 )

Chair/Rubio 2016!

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Obamachair is destroying America!

Repeal Obamachair!

5 ( +13 / -9 )

Look everyone! Biden is at Sushi's house! Did you see the intelligence level fall even further??

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

An empty chair is much better/safer than a chair taken by a clown.

-5 ( +8 / -13 )

"This seat's taken"

And the present occupant has done serious damage to the nation's finances. And he'll do a lot more damage if he's re-elected.

-11 ( +9 / -20 )

"This seat's taken."

Heh, Obama fell for it hook, line and sinker. Clint defined him as an empty chair, Obama confirmed it.

RR

-16 ( +9 / -25 )

Since this bad joke of a president hasn’t met with his Jobs Council since January, the empty chair was most appropriate.

He’s had time to make out his NCAA basketball tourney brackets, welcome sports teams to the White House, play umpteen rounds of golf, go on countless campaign jaunts, but he can’t meet with the worthless committee he appointed to act as though he was doing something about the 15% real unemployment rate.

-5 ( +7 / -12 )

I am no fan of Romney, but he did a very credible job in his speech, pretty much along the same lines as Dukakis in '88: former Massachusetts governor, lacking in the charisma department, generally doing better than expected. (You may laugh at the comparison, but even though he ran a generally awful campaign, Dukakis' acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention actually went over quite well; if you don't believe me, go look it up.) But Dukakis in 1988 didn't have to have this millstone of an aging movie star sucking all of the oxygen out of the room. I almost feel sorry for Romney -- here's the biggest moment of his life so far, and if he doesn't win it will likely be the biggest public moment of his life forever, and here an 82-year-old man messed it up for him beyond all belief.

Clint Eastwood mocked for Republican convention appearance

Given the source, praise indeed.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Besides the brilliant empty chair visual, Clint also made one of the best observations of the night: American voters own America. Politicians are our employees. When they don't/won't do the job that they were hired to do, "we have to let 'em go."

RR

-6 ( +8 / -15 )

Newsman, agreed.

Not only that, but Eastwood's appearance epitomized the sad form today's GOP has become: a party of and for ultimately negative white men (and women.)

Former-GOP party chairman Michael Steele said it himself yesterday that only 4% of Republican delegates are of color.

That's a disgrace, especially considering it's being forecast the GOP will become unelectable from 2016 due to changing demographics, mainly a surging Latino population that the GOP always excels itself at alienating.

A key problem with the GOP is they are too inflexible on their principles. They are (generally) anti-abortion (non-negotiable and due to their entirely unprovable belief in the Bible), anti-immigration, anti-gay, anti-gay marriage, against dealing with climate change, anti-foreigner, anti-all non-Christian religions, anti-birth control, anti-people of color, the list goes on and on.

The above is just a short list, but what stuns me is how many things you have to be against in order to be a conservative American.

The entire conservative mindset and set of 'values' is extremely negative.

What are conservatives actually for?

This is a key reason I could never be a conservative - I'm a very positive person and conservative values are simply too negative, too depressing and so anti-fellow human.

To stay relevant, the GOP needs to become more flexible and centrist.  Unfortunately for them, the extremists in the TP have dragged them in the opposite direction and the hyper partisanship of today's political climate in the States isn't likely to see this change any time soon.

The Obama campaign shot back afterward by tweeting a photo of the back of the president’s chair, with Obama’s head peeking over it, along with the line: “This seat’s taken.”

No....That seat is only rented and that exactly why Obama's team has been while continue to fail.

-5 ( +5 / -10 )

Correction:

No....That seat is only rented and that exactly why Obama's team has been and will continue to fail.

-4 ( +7 / -11 )

The Dem convention should have an empty suit as a prop.

They already do. It won the last election and has been President for the last 3 1/2 years.

-6 ( +6 / -12 )

Clint Eastwood gave the reason to shed tears since 23,000,000 Americans have no jobs under the divider in chief. The Obamabots attack Clint for speaking out the truth. It is kind of oxymoron since liberalism has been moving away from its own principle of inclusiveness and openness. The liberal join force with left wing thus becoming exclusiveness, by attacking any person or opposite view. The policy of quick fix and self-interest of the few by hiding behind the mass and disregarding the debt, or well being of future generation has been used unsuccessfully in most Western Europe; for America need not to follow. Clint said "go ahead, and make my day".

-9 ( +4 / -12 )

It doesn't mean his speech was bad, it means that there are a lot of catty ageist people out there who think nothing of mocking a great man once he falls out of their 'cool' age demographic, and does something out of the box. In other words it reflects on them....and they call themselves 'liberals'...why is that word so often linked with out and out intolerance of the kind they so often say is a Republican trait? Lot of people shouldn't be throwing stones.

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

Not only that, but Eastwood's appearance epitomized the sad form today's GOP has become: a party of and for ultimately negative white men (and women.)

Oh, and the Dems have done no negative campaigning....(whistles....)

Former-GOP party chairman Michael Steele said it himself yesterday that only 4% of Republican delegates are of color.

Doesn't that mean that blacks identify strongly as Democrats? It would be illegal and impossible to keep blacks out of one party or another, do you say that's what's happening?

-5 ( +5 / -10 )

It's an improvement on 4 years ago when a senile old white man was the nominee.

5 ( +10 / -5 )

@Sushi

Leave it up to libs to spin everything around, it's always someone else's fault, Dems are the savior of the American way and American life as we know it, no room for bipartisan ship. Clint was spot on in a nutshell, Obama failed and I know that hurts you guys, but we don't award failure. He had 4 years, 2 of them controlling all three branches of government. Absolute power and what happened? You guys spent, outspent Bush tried to jam every thing through legislation, spent tax payers money on Green projects that failed again and again, rammed a healthcare mandate that we can't afford, let alone that the majority of Americans don't want, 8.3% unemployment, government owning GM, stripping our military and NASA and much more....

So you guys think with that kind of a bismol record, you all deserve 4 more years??? For what? To turn the US into a 350 million population into a 3rd world nation. You guys destroyed California, that's more than enough damage done! Liberalism the way Obama is using it, is the worst thing for America.

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

But yesterday's RNC coverage was great! I kept it on the More of the Same National Barack Channel and the pundits were trying soooo hard to be balanced ( that's a new one) but Matthews, Sharpton, Maddow and Hayes just couldn't do it, their liberal bias ism just came to a boiling point and they just had to poke cynical nasty shots at people at the convention as to why this network is on the air, I have no idea, nobody watches them. CNN did a lot better, but Piers Morgan, again, why is he on that network? He should go back Dancing with the stars or on msn.

-8 ( +3 / -10 )

@jim

It's an improvement on 4 years ago when a senile old white man was the nominee.

why must you liberals make everything a race issue? So if I were to say, "it's a huge failure 4 years ago of a young Black man who was the nominee." that would make me a racist, right?

See how idiotic it sounds, when defeated, a liberals best defense is to use the race card, never fails.

-9 ( +5 / -13 )

@Bass You're missing the point of my comment. The Republican Party is disproportionately white. Would you agree with that statement?

9 ( +11 / -3 )

Yes, but that doesn't mean that they are anti minority

-9 ( +4 / -12 )

A key problem with the GOP is they are too inflexible on their principles. They are (generally) anti-abortion (non-negotiable and due to their entirely unprovable belief in the Bible), anti-immigration, anti-gay, anti-gay marriage, against dealing with climate change, anti-foreigner, anti-all non-Christian religions, anti-birth control, anti-people of color, the list goes on and on.

Eastwood is self-identified as socially liberal, Romney is not a Tea Partier by any stretch....and Ryan is a happy conservative warrior ! (Look it up, in the mold of Rockefeller, Reagan, Kemp as contrasted with the sharper edges or bumbling aggressiveness of Palin, Chris Christie etc.

I agree that the Eastwood speech (actually comedy bit) was brilliant. It was obviously scripted as a Parody of "Harvey" to truly ridicule Obama (for the first time !) without being nasty or over-the-top.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

"Clint, my hero, is coming across as sad and pathetic"

Ebert's entitled to his opinion. Heck, he gets paid to blurt them out, lol.

"The Republican Party is disproportionately white. Would you agree with that statement?"

Obama got a disproportionate percent of the black vote ( near 100% ). Would you agree with that statement?

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

Just for the record,

Rather enjoyable to see the MSM go into full meltdown over Clint's speech. But the very best thing I read so far was from Jim Treacher over at The Daily Caller...........Wish I could take credit for it but I can't.

Dirty Harry calls out the President of the United States in front of the whole world, and he responds with… a tweet.

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.

-2 ( +3 / -6 )

As a matter of fact, I think it's racist that Blacks overwhelmingly vote for Obama, solely because he's Black, but that's not racist? Obama could slaughter 300 Mink Whales, destroy the Pyramids, blow up the Taj Mahal and be accused od spousal abuse and still, the majority of Blacks would vote for him, now how is that NOT racist? Most Blacks are socially conservative in every way, church going people, they don't have ANY typical liberal attributes.

-14 ( +3 / -16 )

Sail: "Dirty Harry calls out the President of the United States in front of the whole world, and he responds with… a tweet. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant."

I wonder how long it took before the folks at Dem HQ finally stopped laughing at how badly Eastwood humiliated Mitt in front of a global audience of millions ?  :-)

8 ( +11 / -3 )

Readers, the word "racist" has no place in this discussion.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Only a misfit empty suit candidate like Romboid can be upstaged by an empty chair. No one cares about Romney's speech, they are more interested in an empty chair.

The DNC needs to have about 25 chairs for the Romboid to so they can capture all of his positions, on just healthcare, for it, against it, kinda for it, kinda against it, for it on Tuesdays, against it for the old, for it for guys who are rich, and on and on and on.

And of course the republicans are all about race. It funny when they try to deny it. A CNN camerawoman who was black had peanuts thrown at her during the convention with the two folks doing it saying this is how we feed the animals. Michele has been called a gorilla by RNC operatives. Its all so very clear. The Obama derangement syndrome that the republicans clearly have is all about him being black.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

At least with Clint's act, he didn't have to resort to gutter language to make "blue jokes." He commented on what Obama would probably say, and never used a cuss word. Yet you get actors today who tweet from the WH with cuss words about the good times they are having.

Clint's act showed class. Too bad many of the Dems don't. Funny, how the Dems thought Trudeau and Doonesbury was fine to make jokes about Bush (both of them) being nothing but invisible men, but now someone does the same to Obama and now it is seen as bad.

-4 ( +3 / -8 )

Mr. Eastwood MADE MY DAY!

3 ( +3 / -1 )

John McCain was born on a ship in the Suez Canal - did anyone question his birthplace or legitimacy to be president?

No.

Ummm----Errrr..........Yes

The Liberal bastion of the Mainstream Media The New York Times led the attack.

McCain’s Canal Zone Birth Prompts Queries About Whether That Rules Him Out

“If I were on the Supreme Court, I would decide for John McCain,” Ms. Pryor said in a recent interview. “But it is certainly not a frivolous issue.”

Apologies forgot to add the birther network NBC to the list about McCain.

I saw the whole thing on TV and didn't even even bother finishing reading this article (no offense against JT), but I'm so tired of all the political crap going on. For months the contenders criticize each other and then as soon as one of them wins, they "kiss and make up" and say what a great president/person he is and life just goes on. I change the channel anytime politics comes in view. I no longer respect Clint Eastwood...he's a good actor and always was, but go go this public in mocking the U.S. president is unprofessional and un-American. Shame on him.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Dirty Harry calls out the President of the United States in front of the whole world.

It was a Republican Convention, not the Olympics.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

The Obama campaign shot back afterward by tweeting a photo of the back of the president’s chair, with Obama’s head peeking over it, along with the line: “This seat’s taken.”

Taken?

One only gets to sit in that seat at the will of the American voters. Another fact that doesn't register with Team Obama.

RR

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

It was a Republican Convention, not the Olympics.

Different venues of course but quite a lot in common.

This the Howard Dean moment of RNC?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

You all projected on Mr Obama your hopes and dreams and painted him how you wanted / needed to see him. Then YOU, a majority, didn't give the mandate he would have needed to pamper your rosey views by giving The Houses away from him in the midterms: What is it YOU want? Make up your MINDS!

Mitt? Glove puppet.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Rock on Clint!

-1 ( +2 / -4 )

" this public in mocking the U.S. president is unprofessional and un-American. Shame on him."

That's the biggest laugh I've had all day. The media continually mocked Bush. Liberals can dish it out but they can't take it. Romney's speech had nothing they could criticize so the left-wing attack dogs will just keep baying at Clint for having the audacity to make fun of their messiah.

Very predictable.

Finally the right is fighting back. Dan Quayle was forever remembered for the spelling mistake. If the media were true to form that be continually referring to Obama as the guy who doesn't know the number of states he's President of.

Liberal media are just bullies. Best way to treat bullies is to stand up to them. Everyone loved Clint until that speech. Just shows you what people are like.

"this public in mocking the U.S. president is unprofessional"... really, that's too funny. Maybe you mean, mocking Democratic President Obama is unprofessional.

cry me a river.

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

America is at war on 2 foreign fronts. It's time to get behind the president. Public parodies like these targeting the commander in chief are plain un-American. (Rhetoric taken from the mid-2000s.)

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

If Clint did a similar thing with Romney in an invisible chair, or Bush back in the day, liberals would have seen it as his finest moment.

Nobody is allowed to make fun of Obama.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Not sure which is funnier, Clint's performance or the Obamacampers' spin-attempts. I think Clint was brilliant.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

82 year old man can say whatever the hell he wants. Nice to see some spontaneity though, instead of the scripted crap that they usually provide.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Clint was... unique. Mitt, who?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

"The Obama derangement syndrome that the republicans clearly have is all about him being black."

Republicans have no problems with blacks. Ever heard of Condi Rice? A black woman got probably the best reception. LIberals just can't help pretending that republicans are racist.

I think it's great that you guys had a black President. Maybe after Condi Rice, Colin Powell, and then a black President, people can stop talking about a racist America. It's time to just judge a person on his record - not the color of their skin, and alleging that questioning of a black persons performance is racist.

That's a tired old strategy. Grow up!

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

@yasukuni, you're so right! On SNL, Repubs have always been roasted( rightly so), but poking fun at Obama has been taboo, and even SNL veterans have said so. The guy from MadTV ( Phil LaMarr) would parody Obama very well.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

I sometimes get the sense that the Republicans on this board would rather simply have a conservative dictatorship in the US, whereby they could simply stamp out any liberal idea that dared to rear its ugly head. While fascism often seems to work when you are on the side of the fascists, in the long view it is doomed to fail, just like the Romney campaign of 2012. After all, once you've managed to eliminate everything you hate, you find out it is yourself that you truly hated in the first place.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

"Clint Eastwood mocked"

Heh heh, he certainly wasn't mocked by anyone present in that auditorium.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

He just made the GOP look even more insane.

3 ( +8 / -4 )

but go go this public in mocking the U.S. president is unprofessional and un-American. Shame on him.

I guess you don't think too highly of Kanye West and his "George Bush doesn't care for Blacks" or Sean Penn and his comments about Bush, and lets not forget the rants Rosie O'Donnel has made about Bush. I guess that makes them "Un-American" too.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

"He just made the GOP look even more insane"

He did not. He did, however, piss off the Obama campaign.

-7 ( +1 / -9 )

After all, once you've managed to eliminate everything you hate, you find out it is yourself that you truly hated in the first place.

That could be said about the Dems. After all, they are the ones who call Blacks and other minorities who don't agree with them "sell outs."

I don't agree with all the Dems or GOP do, but I am big enough to admit when either party has good points or bad points. Obamacare, I don't agree with it, but I am glad that they made it so insurance companies just can't drop you. Does it need more work, no doubt, but the Dems are the ones who didn't want to compromise.

I sometimes get the sense that the Republicans on this board would rather simply have a conservative dictatorship in the US, whereby they could simply stamp out any liberal idea that dared to rear its ugly head

Also, I think such liberal thinkers (sarcasm) like Woody Allen and others are the ones who wished Obama could just put into place laws like they do in China to get his agenda going. You can look that up and see the direct quotes, but even under Reagan and Bush, did I ever hear of a conservative saying we need to go to a dictortatorship rule "for our own good."

I think you missed the point in Romney's speech about that even though his party didn't vote for Obama, that they stood behind him and hoped that he was a success since we were all Americans.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Alphaape... shhhhhh. Please don't bring up the "B" word. Not until after the election is over. Signed, The GOP Planning Committee

"Eastwood, a fiscal conservative who takes left-leaning stands on social issues such as gay marriage"

"George Takei said he was "drafting a DNC speech to ( an ) imaginary Romney in an empty factory"

Jeez, George, what would you do if Clint took a right-leaning stand on your gay marriage? Sheesh.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

My read is that he stole the show, not that he was pathetic. I love the campaign posters, too: Eastwood/Chair. He added some humanity to the evening.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

He did not. He did, however, piss off the Obama campaign.

Is that why even Ann Romney tried to distance away from his act?

1 ( +3 / -1 )

John McCain was born on a ship in the Suez Canal.

No he wasnt.

Your fact checker having the night off again?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Millions have formed an opinion of Romney. And of Eastwood. I like Eastwood. As an actor and producer of great movies.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

"Is that why even Ann Romney tried to distance away from his act?"

Is that why she said "We appreciated Clint's support."?

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Your fact checker having the night off again?

Well, yes, it was a different canal, though it still wasn't Kansas.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/28/us/politics/28mccain.html

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Is that why she said "We appreciated Clint's support."?

By calling him a "unique" guy and he did a "unique" thing?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I didn't know "unique" was bad.

-1 ( +2 / -4 )

What Obama should have done was to just laugh it off as a way to take the sting out what Clint said and did. Instead, his arrogance got the better of him. Obama took the bait and ran with it; thus, everyone will now and forever remember how Clint's words and actions so rattled a sitting president.

RR

-3 ( +3 / -7 )

Politco's don't see the enormous positive impact of Clint's appearance. Too many are thinking of analyzing a speech (as handler types do) instead of just watching, listening and then looking thru the eyes of John or Jane Doe American. The party machine control freaks will no doubt be all over themselves with awesomeness when it wins the election for Romney.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Clint's act was funny and well intended...pity he has to choose sides, one side he doesn't like, and one side nobody cares about...it feels like a waste of good intended energy to me...

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I always liked Clint Eastwood, but it's just so sad to see him make a fool of himself like that. Maybe he was nervous and had a few too many drinks beforehand? His act was rambling, disjointed and well, just lame. I felt embarrassed for him.

2 ( +5 / -2 )

SushiSake, it seems you've taken the misguided liberal mindset of the news organizations that hysterically accuse the GOP of being "(generally) anti-abortion (non-negotiable and due to their entirely unprovable belief in the Bible), anti-immigration, anti-gay, anti-gay marriage, against dealing with climate change, anti-foreigner, anti-all non-Christian religions, anti-birth control, anti-people of color, the list goes on and on."

To the contrary, most conservatives in the U.S. are none of those over-worn cliches, and their "mindset and set of 'values' is [NOT] extremely negative."

You ask, "What are conservatives actually for?". You say, "I'm a very positive person and conservative values are simply too negative, too depressing and so anti-fellow human." Conservatives are positive, too, and their values are not negative, depressing and certainly not anti-fellow human. Their values are basic, honest, empathetic and sympathetic, but not bend-over-backward, it's-okay-to-slap-me-down obeisance like the typical leftist Democrat.

For what it's worth, I'm a Canadian who was very active politically on both sides of the coin, and I continue to follow and write about, and teach, the differences.

-4 ( +1 / -6 )

Or being working class and republican when they are just going to steal from you to give more to the rich

Ridiculous, most Republicans are working class.

-1 ( +1 / -3 )

By Obama feeling so threatened by Clint that he just had to tweet a response (with a now-famous symbolic photo him sitting in a chair with his back turned on Americans) is an indication that he even sees the writing on the wall about not winning a second term on Nov. 6 and is in denial - the first stage of grief.

The next stage is anger. Think we'll see any of that next week?

RR

-3 ( +1 / -5 )

Clint Eastwood failed to his share.

His job was to CONNECT to the audience.

He did not connect to Black, Latinos, Women voters..

Very poor job and it summed up about RNC.

1 ( +4 / -2 )

Oh by the way, we will see this again on SNL tonight.

1 ( +3 / -1 )

Politco's don't see the enormous positive impact of Clint's appearance. Too many are thinking of analyzing a speech (as handler types do) instead of just watching, listening and then looking thru the eyes of John or Jane Doe American.

Exactly. The massive meltdown by the liberals that's now going on here in the States is because they fail (or refuse) to ask themselves is: Who's more popular with the majority of Americans: Barack Obama, or Clint Eastwood?

RR

-5 ( +1 / -8 )

He did not connect to Black, Latinos, Women voters..Very poor job

Do you know much about American politics? Blacks and Latinos are never going to vote for Romney or the Republican Party. They are poor and like their benefits. Why would they vote for a party that promises fiscal conservatism? Romney needs to win over the white vote and he shouldnt apolgise for doing so. That is the only way he will win.

-2 ( +3 / -4 )

Do you know much about American politics?

I would like to think so. I am in the front line in my district for political campaign and doing as much as I can in my state since 40 yrs. ago.

I appreciate heathly political debates who understands issues, stakes and solutions. Thank you.

-1 ( +1 / -1 )

Furthermore, three days ago, we successfully converted one failing hospital to a state funded medical school hospital. More than 87% of voters want to go with the idea. Everyone is entitled to a good medical care.

We successfully have been keeping Deaf and Blind school from closing. It was also a big success. Everyone is entitled to public school if they are disabled.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I would like to think so.

Then why would you think the Republican candidate would be using his nomination speech to reach out to Blacks and Latinos? They overwhelmingly vote Democrat and that isnt going to change overnight. The same reason why Romney wont be spending much time campaigning in California nor Obama in Texas.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Mr Eastwood was right on point!-When You Can't (or won't)take the heat,Get Out of the Kitchen! The Democratic Party has gotten way too far to the Left in recent years & so after voting ,like my Father & Grandfather Democrat, I have changed my Party to Republican-The People come First!

-1 ( +4 / -6 )

Typical liberal attitude displayed with this post

So you still don't get that Obama is taking on what may prove to be a level of debt as lethal to the corporation he was hired to run as out of control executive compensation liberals so vociferously decry ? When this country is on the brink of financial Armageddon and the next great depression, you better believe we are all going down together. I won't have money. You won't have money. And when the public health system doesn't have funds to meet basic expenses there sure as hell there is going to be about as much accountability for and connection between the government and these marginalized groups as there is between the will of shareholders and the operations of big business.

Obama is taking on what may prove to be a lethal amount of debt to the corporation he was hired to run.

Clint Eastwood mocked for Republican convention appearance

Headline should read, " Dems mock Eastwood for mocking Obama".

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Haven't seen it yet but plan to and am kind of afraid to. On the one hand The Republican Party terrifies me (in fairness I'm not American). Obama has his problems to be sure but the modern GOP is so extreme that in comparison Reagan is a liberal, Nixon a radical and Eisenhhower an off the charts leftist.

On the other hand Eastwood is amazing. Seriously. Forget Dirty Harry stuff which was decent action but nothing compared to what he's directed. Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby, A Perfect World etc.. the list goes on and on. I can't name a greater living director other than maybe Scorsese.

All successful statesmen must be able to demonstrate flexibility in making pragmatic political calculations. And even if he appears to do little else, I have no doubt that Romney wants to "do good" as president and wants desperately to be successful at his stated goal of getting this country back on the track of fiscal solvency. There is no indication whatsoever that Obama will not continue to pursue an ideological agenda that took a bad situation in 2008 and made matters much, much worse.

When this country is on the brink of financial Armageddon and the next great depression, you better believe we are all going down together. I won't have money.

We DO have money. The Rep (acually the TP) stopped all 12 balancing budget proposals in Washington. All we need to do is to chip in. Everyone has to pay our fair shares including Romney. I will give you a good example here. When we do potlucks at work place, why do we see these free loaders like Mr. Scrooge? They never understand giving is receiving. They never understand a true meaning of Christmas.

There is no tax hike if you are making less than $250,000 with Obama plan while Romney/Ryan is proposing no tax on capital gains and freeing financial regulations for the Wall Street. . Keep it mind these are the problems that took us into this mess.

In my city, 87% of voters agreed to pay 23 cents more for every $100 we spend to keep the hospital open. The things are getting even more funny that these fiscally conservative politicians (The Rep.) are now joining Obama campaign asking for city tax hike to commissior. A mayor of this city (R) is now accepting a Fedral Disaster Fund to restore this city.. This is a rich city in US. What's going on?

-2 ( +1 / -2 )

American voters own America. Politicians are our employees. When they don't/won't do the job that they were hired to do, "we have to let 'em go." And that includes Congress, that has to date, have a 70% of not doing their job. Clint should had more than one chair on the stage.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Most importantly, I need to ask you who took us to two wars? Obama or Bush? It was Bush who took us to two wars. There is no mistake about it.

We are spending $2 billions a week on war in Afganistan. That's your tax money. The money should be spent on us. We need to get out, and Obama has already made a commitment to do so within 2 years.

Cost of war at least $3.7 trillion and counting

That's another problem in addition to the two problems I have listed on my previous post. .

Are you talking about Obama's tax plan, which calls for letting the Bush-era tax cuts expire for incomes of more than $250,000 that would save around 1 trillion over 10 years when the projected deficit for 2012 alone is 1.2 trillion ?

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Lizz, If I understand your question properly the way you have stated, yes, I am talking about Obama tax plan.

Unfortunately, I have no exact offshore tax loophole savings the riches have been enjoying for the past 12 years, but it is believed to be more than 5 trillion dollars. That's the reason they want to keep this previlage as long as they could. And they want a president who is willing to do so. $1 billion for campaign contribution to the PAC is nothing compared to the savings they may enjoy for the next 4 years, possibly 8 years. It is well worth for them to do so. Thank you, Lizz. I enjoy healthy political debate when someone like you who reallly understand the issue.

@sailwind, because of the Civil Rights movement, the Liberals help Blacks to be free (property to person) in society, most Blacks have not forgotten what Liberals did for them in history. Look everyone! Biden is at Sushi's house! Did you see the intelligence level fall even further??

@spoke, I may disappoint you. Biden was a Prosecutor and the District Court Judge before going into politics. He was a chairman of Judicial Committee as well as Foreign Affairs for many years in congress.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

You all projected on Mr Obama your hopes and dreams and painted him how you wanted / needed to see him. Then YOU, a majority, didn't give the mandate he would have needed to pamper your rosey views by giving The Houses away from him in the midterms:

That has to be one of the most convoluted example of excuse-making for Obama that I've seen so far. Obama peddled hope and change as his platform. Too bad people believed it and voted for him.

-1 ( +1 / -3 )

@Sushi

You are really sorrily misguided, Being Pro-life doesn't mean that you don't respect Pro-choice, huge difference. If you choose not to believe in any religious entity that is your prerogative, but religion isn't the guide for every conservative, just like the opposite that every liberal is NOT religious, stop lumping people into a Borg collective. Conservatives are NOT against immigration at all, we are mostly for comprehensive and LEGAL immigration, that's the difference between liberal and Conservatives, Liberals want an open door policy, let everyone in and eliminate all borders. Once you do that, you do NOT have a sovereign nation. Some Conservatives are Anti-gay, many are NOT, most Liberals are against a Strong National Defense, (I think that's insane, but that'll be for a later topic) NOT against gay marriage, just the use of the "word" They have "Civil Unions" but they should have the exact same equal rights and to be protected as anyone else. No, another myth, not against climate or alternative energy solutions, but the global warming thing was proven to be overhyped, that does not mean, it isn't happening, but the Liberals go absolutely wild with this (see Al Gore) as long as the advancement in green energy is done with Private money and private donations, NOT A PROBLEM! But putting it all on the back of the taxpayers, we have to use what we have right now, we have oil, coal, gas and Nuclear, but you guys want us to give up thousands of jobs just to play around with algae?? We don't have any problems with foreigners, of different ethnics, as well as religion, we are the US, remember. Do we have problems, sure we do at times, but you Europeans do too, we are the most tolerant nation, NOT perfect, but least in America as person of color CAN become President, but Germany, France, Spain, UK and all of Europe, I highly doubt it. Anti-birth control, maybe if you are Catholic, but now it seems like you are just ranting.

The above is just a short list, but what stuns me is how many things you have to be against in order to be a conservative American.

No, you are just seeing things from a micro, pragmatic, prism.

The entire conservative mindset and set of 'values' is extremely negative.

The entire Liberal mindset is being aggressively negative, narcissistic, pushy and intolerant of other peoples point of view (especially if they happen to be conservative)

What are conservatives actually for?

Small government, fiscally conservative, helping our middle class and against poverty, believe in self-reliance, love for the country and more.....

This is a key reason I could never be a conservative - I'm a very positive person and conservative values are simply too negative, too depressing and so anti-fellow human.

And this is why I could never be a liberal, cocky, overbearing, pushy and never owning up to any mistakes or failures, raping the country (see California) I am positive like most Conservatives, lack of strong morals a lack of loving their country.

Please do not talk or speak on behalf of Blacks as if you know how they think.

The Democratic party was the worst thing that could happen to Blacks! It was the Democratic Party that has been and is still keeping Blacks and Latinos down. For a very long time!

Democrats started the Klan, they were opposed to civil rights and voted against the civil rights bill from 1865-1965, who passed Jim Crow it was the Democrats, Slavery itself was instituted by well, now we call it the Democratic party and it was the party of Lincoln-the Republican party that ended Slavery! MLK, Malcolm X were assassinated by people in the Democratic party, high taxation on Blacks, keeping them dependent on the party like drug addicts on crack and the constant FREE STUFF that Democrats are known for to keep their base solid and to ensure votes. Blacks have commonality with the Democratic party like Snooki has with Shakespeare.

Most Blacks are socially conservative, are against gay marriage (as most latinos) family and religious oriented, the Democratic party destroyed African Americans and Hispanic Americans and this is why the Republican party is trying to make itself more attractive, yes, in the past they didn't do a good job, but we are in a new era and things have changed, but now more Blacks and Hispanics and especially the ones with a better education are leaving the Democratic party and either becoming Republicans and or Independents.

Then, what does it take to motivate them to get real jobs, DentShop? I would like to hear. I wonde why we do not have this problem in my city My city does not have a ghetto corner. Why do you think we are doing very well here unlike others. We will keep it that way.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Then, what does it take to motivate them to get real jobs, DentShop?

Ask them! My personal reason for getting a job is so I dont have to live in poverty and I can contribute to a better life for my family and community.

Why do you think we are doing very well here unlike others.

I have absolutely no idea where you are right now. Only to say that most of America isnt having as good a time as you are. Instead, how about you tell us about why your town is doing so well?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

@global

You are so much talk and NO bite, you act as if you even have the slightest idea as to what exactly is going on in the Black and Latino community! Maybe where you live you have a few Blacks that are doing well as a hole and I really wish that, but it must be a small, percentage of Blacks where you live. But in the State of CA, the second largest in the union. Blacks have the highest unemployment.

Whites 7%

African American 14.4%

Hispanics 11%

Not to mention the high gang rate and out of control incarceration of Black males. The Democratic party with its piousness polices and keeping Blacks and Latinos addicted to those welfare checks. The Democratic party has ruined the minorities, made them leeches created greater dependence. If Blacks and Latinos would really know the truth instead of voting for the Dems by default, they would realize that voting Democratic is same as taking another EBT card and a trip to the welfare office. Dentshop is correct and if you don't realize that, then you are 100% in complete denial!

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Instead, how about you tell us about why your town is doing so well?

Okay, I love to, DentShop. There are 50 best school districts in US. My city alone takes more than 10 best school districts in US. We believe in quality of education filled with great probrams, job trainings, teachers. We provide free lunch for kids who are in need. We believe in "no kids go to school hungry" philosophy.. Also we offer after school athletic activities keeping them away from crimes. My city is filled with outdoor activities in natue' hiking, skiing, fishing, rock climbing, mt.biking, I can list more and more. School kids can enjoy everything free, They pay nada..

2) our social infrastructure here is most updated and clean for everyone. When you keep public infrastructures clean, everyone wants to do it more. City buys old neighborhood and demolish it and then replace it with newer apartments for poor..

3) Walfare recipients cannot stay on food stamps and cheaper housing forever. In exchange, the community offers many job training (internship) provided by state and private sectors partnership programs, so that everyone has a fair share and many end up with full time jobs.

4) our judicial system is fair and just as much as they could be including law enforcement.

5))we do not believe in segregation. Everyone is welcomed. We embrace them by spreading arms around them. There is no "turf" here. We all blend together, white, blacks, latinos, Asians, muslims. We all live together and respect each other. Once they know that they are welcomed, and feel safe, they return the same respect to our community. They know they are getting a best of the best in US, so they do not want to rock the boat and they want to stay here for life.

6) There are many churches every corner of streets. The doors are all open for everyone who are in need.

. This is a beautiful, peaceful and clean city we all love, and we will keep that way many more years to come..This is not a crime free city, but this city is still safer than any other cities I know.

.

It sounds like a socialist utopia gw. Well done! Your town could earn a lot of money by sending its civic leaders out into the rest of the US to educate other towns and cities on how to spend all that public money and not go broke all the while embracing all those wonderful minorities! In fact, give the White House a call. The president has been spending a lot of public money with no success. He could benefit most of all from your outstretched arms.

globalwatcher, the Liberals had help..............

Everett McKinley Dirksen (January 4, 1896 – September 7, 1969) was an American politician of the Republican Party. He represented Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives (1933–1949) and U.S. Senate (1951–1969). As Senate Minority Leader for over a decade, he played a highly visible and key role in the politics of the 1960s, including helping to write and pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Open Housing Act of 1968, both landmarks of civil rights legislation.

@sailwind, I love to read a healthy feedback on politican debate. You are correct. He is one of the few Republicans who had a vision of America.

We cannot talk about the Civil Rights issue unless we talk about Warren Court and Justice Black who played critical roles in many decisions.. If you are interested in US history, this is a good topic to understand the true meaning of Human Rights in the Constitution. If you have not taken the class, I encourage you to do so, you will learn something nobody can take away from you. Good luck, sailwind.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

We cannot talk about the Civil Rights issue unless we talk about Warren Court and Justice Black who played critical roles in many decisions.

I would take it further back. In my opinion the foundation for true Civil rights equality started well before the court decisions of which 1954 Supreme court ruling of Brown vs The board of Education was the most famous. The path started with President Truman desegregating the U.S Armed forces in 1948. As the U.S Military had a draft and was really a representative slice of the entire country as a whole this change really was profound in changing attitudes towards race relations further on.

And one of the things that are never really taught or acknowledged by a left leaning academia on the the subject of the Civil Rights movement is that before Truman made it official and desegregated the Armed Forces there was a person that had the courage to do it two years before he did.

As a Colonel he also founded the Arizona Air National Guard, and he would desegregate it two years before the rest of the US military.

That person was Barry Goldwater, the acknowledged inspiration for the modern Conservative movement.

globalwatcher.

Here is a good one for all haters on JT

There is a Pulitzer prize winning book called "The Killer Angels" set in the civil war at the battle of Gettysburg. It captures my view and almost all conservatives that I've talked with on the subject of race.

Tell me something, Buster... What do you think of Negroes? Sergeant 'Buster' Kilrain: Well, if you mean the race, I don't really know. This is not a thing to be ashamed of. The thing is, you cannot judge a race. Any man who judges by the group is a pea-wit. You take men one at a time. Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain: You see to me there was never any difference. Sergeant 'Buster' Kilrain: None at all? Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain: None at all. Of course, I haven't known that many freed men... But those I knew in Bangor, Portland... You look in the eye, there was a man. There was a "divine spark," as my mother used to call it. That is all there is to it. Races are men. "What a piece of work is man. How infinite in faculties and form, and movement... How express and admirable. In action how like an angel. Sergeant 'Buster' Kilrain: Well, if he's an angel, all right then... But he damn well must be a killer angel. Colonel, darling, you're a lovely man. I see a vast great difference between us, yet I admire you, lad. You're an idealist, praise be. The truth is, Colonel... There is no "divine spark". There's many a man alive no more of value than a dead dog. Believe me. When you've seen them hang each other the way I have back in the Old Country. Equality? What I'm fighting for is to prove I'm a better man than many of them. Where have you seen this "divine spark" in operation, Colonel? Where have you noted this magnificent equality? No two things on Earth are equal or have an equal chance. Not a leaf, not a tree. There's many a man worse than me, and some better... But I don't think race or country matters a damn. What matters, Colonel... Is justice. Which is why I'm here. I'll be treated as I deserve, not as my father deserved. I'm Kilrain... And I damn all gentlemen. There is only one aristocracy... And that is right here. [points to his head] Sergeant 'Buster' Kilrain: And that's why we've got to win this war.

Or as Martin Luther King said........The content of ones character and not the color of ones skin.

And this is what Democrats and their international allies want for all of America. The ideology - as demonstrably short sighted and doomed to fail as it has always proven to be - is much more important to them than the plight of those that suffer under it. Not only does the US have numerous South American and African states as-well-as the leading edge of the European states as perfect examples of the road to ruin that Obama has chosen to lead the nation; California and numerous cities and municipalities around the country are home grown examples that offer up a warning to the disaster to come.

America must change course now and boot out Obama before the train wreck becomes unavoidable. There is still time but this election is the last chance. A vote for Obama is a guarantee $5 trillion more in morally irresponsible debt piled onto the back of our children and grandchildren. Social welfare programs unreformed and certain to become insolvent within the next 10 to 20 years. Structurally high unemployment (especially among the young generation) and slow economic growth.

Very true. One reason why Condi Rice joined the Republicans.

Rice was a Democrat until 1982, when she changed her political affiliation to Republican, in part because she disagreed with the foreign policy of Democratic President Jimmy Carter, and because of the influence of her father, who was Republican.

"My father joined our party because the Democrats in Jim Crow Alabama of 1952 would not register him to vote. The Republicans did."

Yep, most Blacks that are open-minded and really evaluate the facts and are impartial, would realize that the chain that keeps them from progressing in society is the Democratic party and they know this and they know they have a record for broken promises to the Black and Latin community. For most Blacks the Dems have created a welfare government dependent culture, which is something that the Dems want. Helps them and future votes. Shame on them.

Without the co-operation of the House and Senate?

What more did you expect? In his inaugural speech, Obama himself said it might take two terms to fix all the damage done by the Bush years. Do you think Mr. company closer Romney would fare any better? What's his solution, more tax cuts?

We don't reward failure, the Presidency is a performance rated job, he had 4 years and he himself said, if he can't do a good job in 4 years, he will be a one term President and I totally agree with Obama on that. He did nothing, but racked up more debt and the unemployment rate is a whopping 8.3% Enough already and yes, he should cut taxes and reduce spending. We are spending more than what we are pulling in. We spent 60 cents on the dollar, that is out of control, way too much!

What President inhereted was an absolute disaster. He's done well to stabilize total meltdown. If you don't understand the disaster you don't understand the problem. All of it under Bush's watch.

Romney has been making so many judgement mistakes so far I would hate to see what he does to the world if he has 4 years.

"a party of and for ultimately negative white men"

Will Democrats ever stop bringing race into their elections? I admit that it works but it's tiring and not doing the country any good.

And when George W failed to do his job and live up to his promises, what did they do? They re-elected him! What a bunch of the usual hypocrisy by the Republican warlords.

So it's okay for celebreties to endorse democrats, left wing enviormental terrorists, and every crazy cause under the sun but as soon as one endorses a republican he's ridiculed by his peers. The man has spent most of his life making great movies and has made massive contributions to American society. Yes he's older and has a tendency to ramble but the response is insulting.

A guy takes over from the worst president in recorded history, who left behind two disastrous wars and the largest deficit ever, complete with a banking crisis, auto industry crash, jobs flying overseas, etc... and you expect him to fix the mess in four years? Without the co-operation of the House and Senate?

Wars are still on, deficit is larger, banking and auto-industry problem got kicked down the road (no real reform, just a multi-billion dollar bandaid to cover the pothole), jobs are only coming back because American workers are working longer and for less money. Oh, and the President had a filibusterproof majority in the House and Senate in his first two years.

I'm not a republican, not voiting for Romney, but a failures a failure. I don't care whether it's red or blue.

Failure! Failure! Obama's ruining the economy! Obama's ruining the economy! Who the heck do you people think was in power for 8 years before the biggest economic collapse in recent history? Sorry to tell you but the Bush admin was a failure too. So what is to be done? For one thing, people can stop ranting on and on about how Obama has ruined the country.

Yes, Bush was a failure. Obama is a failure. The sum of their experience in the subject adds up to 12 years of failure.

If the Dems had fielded a halfway decent challenger maybe Bush would have been a one-termer. Maybe Obama should be one too. Heck, if Romney gets elected maybe he should only get one term too. But the last thing I want to hear is, "Yeah the first four years were pretty aweful but I'm sure that if we give him another term he'll do better." or "He needs another 4 years to sort out the mess he was handed." Well he's had four years and the problems have only gotten worse.

What that indicates is that there is a systemic problem with the global economic model. We spent our way into debt and called it progress, the Europeans imposed crushing taxes and regulations to appease big labor, and we made it more profitable to lobby for government subsidy than to actually develop products people want to buy.

Clint Eastwood can endorse whatever party he wants. Last I checked its his right as a US citizen to support whatever party he affiliates with. I may not agree with it but I see it as no reason to heckle him. I don't really like either party but hey, some folks got to go with a sports team and treat politics the same way.

Give me my Clint spaghetti westerns any day,but that drivel of a speech/rant said it was high time he exited stage right of the political arena.

Jon Stewart on the Daily Show has a brilliant take on the "Old Man of the Seat"...give it a listen. Clears up quite a few of the quibbles above. Clint is just a w e s o m e !! !

@Ranger. Not much point in watching that. it will just be the first in an everlasting series of attempts to attack Clint. So predictable. He made fun of Obama - just giving back in the same way that liberals have been doing for years. One attack on CLint is his age. But, he's done everything in Hollywood and doesn't have to worry about the liberal Hollywood machine. A young actor or comedian who made fun of Obama at the RNC wouldn't have any career left.

If Clint did the same kind of speech at the DNC he'd be lauded now. Liberals can dish it out but can't take it.

Clint was brave all right.

16 trillion in debt. But Obama was never really good with numbers was he?

Very interesting. I've read several reviews of the speech on American news sites, but this is the first place that anyone has said it was anything other than a home run. I have a few close friends and family who are Obama supporters, but the vast majority of people I know are fed up with his handling of the economy, his use of executive orders to ram his pet projects through without running them by congress, all he's done to handicap small businesses (The largest group of employers in the USA), and worst of all his attacks on civil rights. He basically nationalized the auto industry and handed it over to his buddies in the UAW. He okayed the execution of an American citizen w/o arrest or trial. He pushed for giving the military the right to detain civilians w/o trial or even charges INDEFINATELY. He used executive privellage to try and cover up the Fast and Furious scandal. He won't let the border patrol and INS enforce the law and deport illegal aliens. He's just plain bad for the country and needs to go.

JT Moderator: Once again, you really have no grasp of the situation. Racism certainly does have a place in the discussion. When Democrats can't win on the strength of their arguments they always call the opponents racists. Even though historically they're the ones who supported Jim Crow laws, faught against desegregation, and have done the least to help minorities. It's the one lie they come back to again and again. Please don't take that from them or they won't have anything left to say.

Someone suggested that we would be better off if a pineapple (the fruit, not the imposter) occupied the Oval Office. Look up Pineapple Party. The chair reminded me of the Murrah Building Memorial (OKC bombing site); memorial to a failed President. Look up "Eastwooding"; lots of empty chair pictures hit the 'net but it will never beat out the You Tube kittens.
