hy should Britain talk to a rogue nation that caused over athousand deaths by their illegal invasion in 1982? BTW Americans, your gov supported us but we refused military assitance.

The solution is simple. England establishes a permanent military/naval base on the island. Stations a nuke carrying sub there. Game over.

Bebert, a nuke sub is nearby. The only ever sinking of a ship by nuke sub was the General Belgrano.

Send in the warships! -Whatever it takes to extract this oil.

This is not a spat. The Falklands belong to the UK. Debate closed.

That the US would refuse to back the UK after all the British lives sacrificed in Bush's sundry follies is appalling, but not surprising.

Obama disagrees. What's more, his party is desperate to pander to the Hispanic block in America. The Spanish speaking world's Anti-Anglo Saxon sentiment hardly stops at the US - Mexico border...

odaogma, Obama can get stuffed. Islands are British and will remain it war or not.

Our Government has never threatened to "do so" again. Foreign Relations Minister Jorge Taiana made it clear "military action will never be among our options"; "Diplomacy will prevail". The British are the warmongering nation.

Those clearly ethical, purer than the driven snow citizens that mugged me of my money in Buenes Aires at gunpoint. Mmm... obviously a country with impecable morals. You must have forgotton the dirty war (high quality morals by argentinians) Don`t judge a whole group of individuals until you meet everyone of them, just like i dont judge Argentinians from a handful of shady ones i encountered.

You think the US 'owes' the UK because you've lost a grand total of 446 (as of 02MAR10) people in supporting OEF and OIF? How many Americans do you think died in the European Theater in WWII? Roughly 400,000. Take even a fraction of that number for Americans who died just to save Britain and you'd still need to add a couple of zeros to your precious 446. You have got to be kidding Ivan. If you're going to judge alliances based on the number of citizens sacrificed, then I'd say that YOU still owe US big time old chap. And to think that someone would chastize the U.S. for wanting to solve a dispute like this diplomatically. Damned if you do, damned if you don't...

WHAT DO THE PEOPLE OF THE ISLAND WANT? IF THEY WANT TO BE BRITISH ,SO BE IT .

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It's best the U.S. doesn't get involved. If they did it'd be another circus like Iraq and Afghanistan.

There are two different issues here and if you can't tell the difference, you are lost. Issue one is the dispute between Argentina and the U.K. over ownership of the Falklands, a totally moot issue that the Argentinians are retarded to debate. Issue two is drilling for oil in the area, and since the exclusive economic zones of Argentina and the Falklands butt into eachother before reaching their full 200 nautical miles, the fact that the Falklands rest on Argentina's continental shelf, and the fact that oil drilled in one area can be sucked out of someone else's area, Argentina may have a reason to complain. Until someone can pinpoint to me exactly where the U.K. plans to drill I can't say anything against Argentina's complaint.

Odogma, I think you have misrepresented Obama. He has refused to take a stand on the oil drilling, that I know, but I have not heard anything about his position on the Falklands and I doubt you have either. Remember dispute one and dispute two are not the same.

Clinton offers to help resolve Falklands spat

Say what you like about Bubba, he can get folks to the table......Oh No! I thought it was the other Clinton! Jeez, talk about adding gasoline to the fire!

Obama disagrees.

Then Obama's grasp of international politics is weaker than most observers give him credit for. South America's dictatorships can sabre-rattle all they want but the USA's closest ally remains the UK - like it or not.

Nah, the Brits can do that themselves just ask Chile about the little problem in 1982.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I'll clarify my post for the youngsters, Chile assisted the British in the Falklands war due to a dispute with Argentina over access to the Beagle Channel (i.e. common enemy = mutual friends). Argentina on the other hand still hasn't learned to accept the outcome.

What is there to discuss? the islands belong to the UK. The UK holds them and the people want to belong to the UK.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Soochi, prove that Obama disagrees about the status of the Falklands. I looked it up and could find no proof that Obama had any problem but over the question of offshore drilling. I cannot prove he does not have a problem, so you prove your statement that he does.

HeyLars - you need to read the thread again. Odogma's words, not mine. I too have no idea whether Obama agrees or disagrees.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If the Falklands belong to the UK is not the issue. Everyone knows they DO!!

What's more important is that bigmouth Clinton AGAIN is interfering in other nation's businesses. Ok, she's only offering help. But in a way to make it seem that other nations can only solve a dispute WITH the help of the US. Who does Clinton actually think she is!!!!

"....we want them talking, and we want them trying to resolve the outstanding issues.”

And many nations want YOU to shut up and mind your own business. That's what they want!! You got that...MS. Clinton?
