The Democratic candidates looked like a weak group of sisters compared to the Republican candidates. Serious issues were sidelined and talk was a mealy mouthed bunch of poop. The talk about education by Bernie Sanders that all Americans should have a free through college education struck me with a bullet between my eyes. My youngest is in college and has paid for education through financial aid because we can not afford for the cost of college and the fact that colleges/universities will prefer to take Asian/international students who pay 3 times or more per credit for a class than locals. My youngest has a high school friend who is from Peru illegally and whose parents cannot leave the USA because if they do they will not be allowed re-entry yet their daughter has been given a full (tuition, room and board) ride by the US government because she qualifies as a "dream child" under some bs law. This dream child law is financed by my tax dollars and my own child can not benefit yet her illegal friend gets a free ride because the us government is full of stupid politicians who will vote through any law as long as they get to keep their jobs. America politics are a joke and Russia, the EU and China are loving it. America has no right to call itself a world class power when things at home are so screwed up and I hope that none of those moronic democrat presidential candidates come close to being elected.

I found it interesting that the Dem candidates said that their debate wasn't about attacking each other and name calling and that they were focusing on vital issues. Well even though they managed to dance around those key questions, with vague answers, the moderators didn't ask questions that would lead to inflammatory comments or personal attacks. Never heard a question to any of the candidates on what they thought personally about each other, or what they may have written in a book. Yet when the moderators get the GOP candidates, they don't stick to the issues but try to frame the questions that will lead to some type of confrontation.

Example, they asked Trump questions about what he said about Rosie O'Donnell. Ok, then why didn't anyone ask Hillary about the comments from a book on former Secret Service Agents who gave stories on how mean spirited she was and how harsh her treatment to them was (to be fair, the agents in the book spoke on all of the Presidents and wasn't just a one sided hit piece), but you get the picture. If it would make the candidates look bad, they didn't ask but they will for the GOP debate.

Those types of questions (hit piece types) don't do good for selecting a President, and shouldn't be asked for both sides. But when you have a media that is in the tank for a Dem candidate and will throw up obscure comments to bring one down and draw attention away from real issues I have a problem with.

-9 ( +3 / -12 )

they asked Trump questions about what he said about Rosie O'Donnell. Ok, then why didn't anyone ask Hillary about the comments from a book on former Secret Service Agents who gave stories on how mean spirited she was

Do you see no difference in asking a person about comments that person has made about another person, and asking a person about comments someone else has made?

The important point this article neglects is Bernie Sanders' constant rejoinder: WE MUST GET OUT THE VOTE. It's why Republicans have the legislature, and why super PACs are so effective. But when the common American who hears the issues - not the commercials - casts their ballot, it is democratic principles that prevail, like equality, justice, and the creation of opportunity through intelligent use of the federal government's powers to level the playing field and return the American Dream (read: upward mobility) more than just a bumper sticker

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Pretty animated and respectful debate unlike the reality show the GOP's inmates shriek from the loony bin.

Both Sanders and Clinton seem pretty smart people. The pure entertainment, however, remains watching the Republicans 15 crazies slug it out.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Glad Bernie's in the race - he's pulling Hillary leftward. A key point I wish more would talk about is that socialism is not incompatible with democracy just as cheese is not incompatible with macaroni. As per Karl Marx: "Give capitalists enough rope. ... and they'll hang themselves." It was the New Deal - socialism at its best - that choked off Communist inroads in American society. The many pillars of that legislation (workers' rights, social security, medicare and medicaid) that remain are justifiably popular: It would be impossible to imagine America without them. However, too many pillars have eroded, and more must be done to bring American social justice into the 21st century (straight from the 19th, in some cases).

I still predict that Hillary will be the next POTUS and hope that she can build on Obama's legacy.

Clash? There was no clash. There was a healthy and constructive debate.

I am proud to be a Democrat today

...their daughter has been given a full (tuition, room and board) ride by the US government because she qualifies as a "dream child" under some bs law.

Hawkeye, I can sympathize - My kids are 1st and 3rd year students at American universities now, and my life savings are imitating a Drano commercial. Still, you've got the facts wrong.

The DREAM Act is not a scholarship or grant program. No monetary benefit is directly attached to this legislation. Under the DREAM Act, undocumented youth adjusting to lawful permanent resident status are only eligible for federal student loans (which must be paid back), and federal work-study programs in which they must work for any benefit they receive. They are not eligible for federal grants, such as Pell Grants. DREAM Act students also receive no special public benefits and are subject to the same eligibility requirements for those benefits as other legal immigrants.

Free junior college might be a good thing considering that a bachelors degree today is equivalent to a high school degree a generation ago. Strong conditions should be applied regarding attendance and grade levels, and perhaps the final two years should still be paid for by the student (with bolstered government aid), but it is certainly an idea worth exploring. As a father of a student, wouldn't you agree?

The best moment of the night:

Sanders: But I think the secretary is right, and that is that the American people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn e-mails....The American people want to know whether we're going to have a democracy or an oligarchy as a result of Citizens Union. Enough of the e-mails. Let's talk about the real issues facing America."

4 ( +9 / -5 )

From what I'm reading it was a strong showing by Democrats. I loved O'Mally's closing statement.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

O'Malley's closing statement

"On this stage you didn't hear anyone denigrate women, you didn't hear anyone make racist comments about new immigrants, you didn't hear anyone speak ill of anyone because of their religious belief," O'Malley said. "What you heard was an honest debate of what will move us forward, to lead to a clean electric grid by 2050, and employ more of our people, rebuild our cities and towns, educate our children at higher and better levels, and include more people in the economic and social life in our country.

"

What a farce.

All very civilised and actually intelligent in most parts.

That made the GOP debates look like fart-lighting competitions.

Hillary should be pressed more about stealing emails and concealing truth during Benghazi hearings which could prove she is just thief and liar same like Bill who said I did't have sex with Monica.

Trump talks a tough line about executing Bowe Bergdahl. Bunch of macho bullshnit.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

I watched on TV skipping Dodgers Mets game last night. Before debate, all candidates were to be gathered behind trailers of Wynn hotel but Clinton was not there. WeJew hRWE knew Culinery Union had demo on some places but did not know there is a hotel named Trump Hotel somewhere in City but Clinton went there to support demo people and that was why she was late. News displayed Rubio stated Alderson will donate to him. But his first speech was full with hatred on Jews aCasiro, Adelson is a Jew. He was Dwm unto; his former e,ployee Shelly bcame pol;ar congress woman, She is not in politics so we don't know if he will give 100 M to a Jew hater. Then display repeatedly showed Jebb's speech..

Clinton's line exposing GOP hypocrisy regarding Planned Parenthood was also spot-on:

Republicans don’t mind having big government to interfere with a woman’s right to choose and to try to take down Planned Parenthood. They’re fine with big government when it comes to that. I’m sick of it! We should not be paralyzed by the Republicans and their constant refrain ‘big government this, big government that’ except for what they want to impose on the American people.

She was brave to even mention Planned Parenthood, but it's a good signal: She'll take what the GOP thinks is its weapons and turn them against them. PP might work well for a GOP candidate in the primaries, but it will kill the eventual nominee in the general election - as well the Benghazi "investigation" (there ought to be an investigation into this investigation, which has surpasses the Watergat investigation in length and expenditure but does not seem to be on the verge of concluding anything).

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Suggesting a president subvert the military court system to execute a soldier, as Trump wants to do to Berghdahl, shows the GOP frontrunner is dangerously cuckoo. The idea seems worse than attacking McCain for being a POW.

For Nevada people, especially Vegans. it is hard to understand bragging of NE states governors.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Torafusu, it is telling that the three leading GOPers - Trump, Carson, and Fiorina - have absolutely no chance of becoming president. I mean, the party will be lucky enough to elect a House Speaker without resurrecting Gingrich or - gasp! - Cheney, completely insane ideas bandied about by supposedly serious people at the end of their ropes.

My guess is that Bush will eventually bow ("time for fresh blood" and all) and leave the nomination to Rubio, a character so capricious he makes Clinton look like Gibraltar. Between now and then, though: There will be blood (they're already gunning after McConnell to abolish the Filibuster, irony of ironies). I just hope the Union is strong enough to survive.

When asked how her administration would differ from President Barack Obama’s, she said with a smile, “Being the first woman president would be quite a change.”

Actually, it might not be a big change.

"Biden has been deliberating about his political future for months and is expected to announce a decision within days."

He needs to jump into this race to liven things up!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Things must be bleak for the GOP if they are pinning their hopes on Joe B. running.

Trump just gets on the nerves of too many people. Engages in crazy talk without any kind of filter. If ever notice Hillary talking about executing an AWOL American soldier like Trump has promised to do, y'all be sure to let everyone know.

Biden will not get in. Clinton and Sanders have made this lively enough. At least they're debating on substance and not on how to out-Reaganesque the other.

Laguna: the Benghazi "investigation" (there ought to be an investigation into this investigation, which has surpasses the Watergat investigation in length and expenditure but does not seem to be on the verge of concluding anything).

The investigation(s) cleared up any wrongdoing on Clinton's part in Benghazi and debunked the GOP's imaginary claims. Since that was a bust, Republicans had to move to the email issue.

After her husband’s White House tenure, Hillary was forced to return an estimated $200,000 in White House furniture, china, and artwork that she had stolen. The fact that a lying influence peddler, thief and shakedown artist can corral so much support among the democratic party speaks to how absolutely desperate and out of touch the left has become.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

@kabukilover> f you want to write such phony story, check furniture price at that time. Cheaper than for sale furniture stores. And also what kind of furnitures are used in WH -American, not from your guess. They don't use cheap stainless wares.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

In my opinion, Sanders is a plant to make Hillary look good. He's too far to the left and by comparison makes her look more centrist.

I find it interesting that the party that claims that they are for full diversity has all white people running. Not one of the Blacks or Hispanics or any other minority that they supposedly are looking out for their better interests is good enough to be President. At least with the GOP, you have a woman, a Black, and two Hispanics (sounds like a joke opening).

Instead of a free college education, since it was brought up that in today's job market, a college education is the equivalent to a high school diploma 50 years ago, how about going back to the free system we have now with the public education from K-12, and make that better so that when students graduate, they actually know something that matters like the hard sciences and skills instead of testing to some "common core" as the GOP wants or learning about "social justice" and having their high school diplomas only mean that they passed the 12 year day care system that kept them off the streets during the daytime. We work the public education system before free college for everyone, because in a few years all you will get is a plea for more graduate education since a Bachelor's degree will not mean as much.

I found Webb to be reasonable. Instead of giving a focus group answer on who was his worst enemy and blaming the GOP, he mentioned the VC that threw a grenade at him. He's no longer with us now so at least he knows how to take care of business. With Hillary, she blames the GOP, and so that means that she will not be willing to work with them, and I guess those who don't tow her line will join her "enemies list." Newsflash Hillary, if you are elected, you will also be President for those who didn't vote for you. You may not want to alienate an entire party and the people who are in it as your enemies.

Notice how the moderators tried to steer clear of the topics that you accused the GOP debates of degenerating into name callings, etc. It helps if you are going to throw softball questions to all candidates. At least Webb acknowledged that when he made his comments of him being not asked questions and he could see it was all a big campaign add for Hillary.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Sanders is a plant to make Hillary look good. He's too far to the left and by comparison makes her look more centrist.

He's the best choice. Not too far to the left, rather, he's a man for the people.

Newsflash Hillary, if you are elected, you will also be President for those who didn't vote for you. You may not want to alienate an entire party and the people who are in it as your enemies.

I'm unfortunately going to pull a Bass here, and say that maybe the Republicans should try taking that advice.

Although I recently saw an interview with Chris Christie, and one thing I really liked that he said was something along the lines of it being his job to get along with the other side and get things done, and how that's not capitulation, but rather doing a good job. But notice how with an opinion like that, he's way at the bottom of the Republican polls.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

he's way at the bottom of the Republican polls

I don't think he is in the bottom of the polls tor that type of comment, but his overall policies. I agree that they must learn to get along, but I don't see that from any of the Dems maybe except Webb. Just based on Hillary's record, one can see what they do to those who don't agree with them.

To say that Sanders is not too far left, you must be kidding. There was an article on how much Sanders proposals would actually costs, and it would be trillions more than what the government is currently spending. You can only tax peoples so much. Where will the extra money come from? .

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Remember one ex governor blagged his state installed windmills and wanted Nevada do same if he is elected/ Well Hillary is still in south of Vegas and explained Solar panels on top of casinos. We oly have solar energies and no need foe windmills. Hillary is keen. it is hot and no wind, T save aie con, we go casino to cool down. No nees of windmill. But the Gov thought NV is cold and windy like his state. Mabe too hoy, only Hillaet and Sanders left snd donation are pouring to them.

@ Laguna: You need to check out the story on the Illegal Immigrant at Cal-State Long Beach who was elected the student body president, and is fighting for the pay that goes along with it ($1264) a month, who even has the support of the Univ. President. He came to the country illegally 10 years ago, and is now at the Univ. While he is trying to find a loophole to get the other stipend as student body president, he still gets $300/month, along with free tuition, and a faculty parking lot spot.

All of the Dem candidates said that they would support extending Obamacare to illegals, something that the President said would not happen and was voted on by at least two of them (Clinton and Sanders) knowing that illegals will not get the healthcare.

At what point do they not understand that you can't have a country without rules. This guy came to the US illegally 10 years ago, not born here but was old enough to be aware of the illegality. Yet we are to give him free stuff and he is demanding more, when there are plenty of deserving US citizens (notice I didn't say what race since they are from all races) who are struggling to get through school, and this guy who broke the laws is getting a free ride. You may not like the immigration laws on the books, I don't have a problem with that, but to just openly flaunt them, and then pander to the people who do so despite the fact that illegal aliens can't vote in US elections tells me that the voting will be rigged. One of the reasons why people like Trump are doing well among Hispanics (legal ones who can vote) is that they know that in order to succeed, you have to follow the law. Not all Hispanics in America have direct relatives that come to the US illegally, that in itself is racist thinking by the Dems that everyone came here illegally or is related to someone south of the border. Here's a thought that they should ponder, just because I am Black, doesn't mean that I have direct relatives in Africa that I want to get over to America illegally the same as Hispanics in the US.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This guy came to the US illegally 10 years ago, not born here but was old enough to be aware of the illegality.

He was probably in the neighborhood of 10 years old when he came here. I'm not sure I know too many 10-year olds who know about immigration laws, know they are breaking them, then tell their parents they that refuse to do anything illegal. Not really the best example for someone flaunting their status. And to become student body president at Cal-State Long Beach probably means he's a special person who would do well to live and work here.

There is so much support for immigration reform and it's being blocked by a small group of Republicans, even when there are enough votes to pass both the House and the Senate. They just block the vote from happening at all. It's good for business, good for healthcare, good for Democrats, good for Republicans, pretty much good across the board. But this very small group on the far right somehow wield extensive power over the Republican majority and paralyze the process, and Republicans take extensive political damage because of it.

I was at Brertbart today and they had 12 separate articles on the front page of their website that used the word "migrant." It's an obsession. We talked about it a year ago, but not nearly to this extent. Not only do they cover the situation in the US, but they have stories about migrants from around the world. And they pump that crap out daily. These people are just out of control.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I'm not surprised. Jose Antonio Vargas, Pulitzer prize winning journalist, immigration activist and America’s most famous undocumented (Filipino) immigrant has been openly traveling and speaking about his immigration status.at high profile events all over the country for years. I believe he actually did turn himself in last year in McAllen TX but was released by the Border Patrol on his own recognizance. It is completely insanity.

Former President Clinton and his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, have sent $28,000 worth of household goods back to Washington after questions arose over whether the items were intended as personal gifts or donations to the White House. “We have been informed that it is being shipped back, and the National Park Service is ready to receive it, take possession of it and take custody of it,” Jim McDaniel, the National Park Service’s liaison to the White House, said Wednesday. “The property is being returned to government custody until such time that the issues can be resolved. It may well turn out that that property is rightly the personal property of the Clintons.” Giving Back After they were criticized for taking $190,000 worth of china, flatware, rugs, televisions, sofas and other gifts with them when they left, the Clintons announced last week that they would pay for $86,000 worth of gifts, or nearly half the amount. Their latest decision to send back $28,000 in gifts brings to $114,000 the value of items the Clintons have either decided to pay for or return.

Clinton, Sanders clash on guns, economy, foreign policy

The biggest clash was among the candidates trying to out Socialist each other. Free this and free that. Meanwhile they were implicitly bashing the state of the Obama economy and ignoring the fact that Obama has run up $9 trillion in debt over the last six and a half years. Obama is currently running up a half trillion dollar a year debt and all the Dem's can come up with are to double down on the worst economic recovery in American history and more deficit spending. With the exception of Webb, all of them denounced capitalism while promoting the same old socialist-progressive policy ideas. Bizarre.

The biggest clash was among the candidates trying to out Socialist each other. Free this and free that.

Kinda like Bush's tax plan that pockets him an extra $900,000. Got anymore tax cuts for us Mr. Deficit Hawk?

Meanwhile they were implicitly bashing the state of the Obama economy and ignoring the fact that Obama has run up $9 trillion in debt over the last six and a half years.

Please tell me what he spent the money on that any President wouldn't have to spend the money on. And be detailed. The last analysis I saw showed that Bush's debts were mostly from bad choices that didn't have to be made like the War in Iraq and tax cuts. Obama's money is tied up paying for unemployment and veteran benefits from the last time the GOP was in office.

Obama is currently running up a half trillion dollar a year debt and all the Dem's can come up with are to double down on the worst economic recovery in American history and more deficit spending

So much old thinking here. Austerity is not the answer and Europe has proven that over and over again. When demand collapses economists have learned that the government needs to step in to replace part of it. When they pay unemployment benefits, that money is immediately handed over to landlords, grocery stores, loan companies, etc. We are learning that they ultimately become the beneficiaries and things continue to function as they did before. That prevents a downward spiral.

In all reality the US government should have spent more right at the onset to replace demand, but Republicans were too stubborn to change. There's a great comic strip showing the US economy as a dying patient in the emergency room, the Democrats are trying to shock it's heart with paddles and the Republican is behind him pulling the plug out of the wall to save on electricity costs. I suspect some Republicans know this but having a weak economy helps them in their war against Obama and I don't put them above that.

all of them denounced capitalism while promoting the same old socialist-progressive policy ideas. Bizarre.

Bernie is asking all of the right questions. You don't have to vote for him or even like him, but he's able to articulate what a lot of people are thinking about the economy. Hopefully he will burst the zombie lie that is trickle-down economics. As for Clinton, I thought one of the circulated GOP talking points was how she was in bed (always using that phrase) with Wall St and the banks.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Kinda like Bush's tax plan that pockets him an extra $900,000. Got anymore tax cuts for us Mr. Deficit Hawk?

You are right - the government has their hand on the scale and Bush has no intention of fixing that. Those that are in favor are allowed to pay less in taxes than others. Only a flat tax with no deductions (except the first amount earned up to the poverty level) can bring things back to any semblance of fairness. The flat tax is perfectly "progressive". If someone makes 10 times more in income than I do they pay 10 times more in taxes. The way it is now both party's have constructed a tax code with so many deductions that the well off - who can afford tax attorney's to keep track of the complex tax code - pay much less than they would if the tax rate were flat. Corporations make a killing on the deductions. As for Bush getting an extra $900,000, as-long-as he is paying the same flat tax rate as everyone else I could care less how much money he gets to keep. I do not envy the success of others as the Left does. At least I would know he didn't get an advantage on me because he could afford to pay a top tax lawyer.

So much old thinking here. Austerity is not the answer and Europe has proven that over and over again. When demand collapses economists have learned that the government needs to step in to replace part of it.

Old thinking? What is going on now is old and leading nowhere. The US government has been running an annual deficit for 48 of the last 50 years regardless of whether the economy grew or contracted. Even Keynes knew that was voodoo economics. He said spend during the recession and run surpluses during the recovery. The only surpluses in recent memory were caused by a tech bubble that subsequently burst and caused a recession leading to more deficit spending by both Bush Jr. and Obama.

Are you trying to say that that whenever government is locked into a half century cycle of spending more than it takes in the government can never stop deficit spending?

In all reality the US government should have spent more right at the onset to replace demand, but Republicans were too stubborn to change.

Nearly $900 billion in shovel ready spending was not enough? Wow, you don't ask for much do you.

Bernie is asking all of the right questions. You don't have to vote for him or even like him, but he's able to articulate what a lot of people are thinking about the economy. Hopefully he will burst the zombie lie that is trickle-down economics.

How is 50 years of trickle down government working so far? People get so caught up in their partisan squabbles that they miss the forest for the trees. I have 19 trillion reasons that say Bernie's free everything idological policy prescriptions are just plain nutty.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Republican economic theory is just that, something invented by Republicans. Trickle down economics is not quoted in any economics book anywhere, just in the Republican bubble.

Nearly $900 billion in shovel ready spending was not enough?

Nope, not even close, and every economist outside of the Republican bubble agrees. Government spending was the medicine in that specific situation and the GOP fought to water down everything the doctors tried to do. But I've yet to meet a Republican ready to accept that since their thinking is horribly out of date.
