China opens the door to Asia, and the US just walks on through....

Fat chance. This will end in shots being fired.

It takes two hands to clap.... its imperative that everyone keeps cool. Especially America, who has redirected the fear campange to Asia after its done a wonderful job in the Middle East.

Let's hope she doesn't, quote: "She will also raise the spike in tension between Japan and China" ...and this is just a very poor piece of journalistic writing.

repost.....Why China is so afraid of UNCLOS when it is a signatory? It is its tactic to resort to bilateral talks in which it can intimidate the weaker nation, a prey on the predators paw. It's a shame for this growing superpower to exercise its military might against the weak and lowly neighbors. It's like robbing a poor fellow with its meager food in his hand while he is enjoying a sumptous food on his table. China: let these nations live on their own. Do not grab what is not yours just because you have the means. You are bound to obey international laws

The focus of the latest conflict is the Scarborough Shoal, which the Philippines insists is well within its exclusive economic zone but which China claims along with most of the South China Sea....CHINA=GREEDY

@jobert 'Exercise its military might against the weak'. That's what superpowers do.

Coercion is word.

Whether military might or economic might, plying either against another to get what you want is "coercion." I feel rather sheepish to say it, but I've always been proud of how well the U.S. has been able to "influence" other nations.

The so called 'Japanese family that owned Senkaku islands' When did they ever lived in those islands and why they leave those islands? Because their ancestors been there and those islands belonging them? Wasnt that argument too amusing? China has astronauts lifted to space and living in China's space station last month, due to the above theory valid by Japanese claim of senkaku islands, the space is belongs to China!

From Wiki:

The Japanese central government formally annexed the islands on January 14, 1895. Around 1900, Japanese entrepreneur Koga Tatsushirō (古賀 辰四郎?) constructed a bonito processing plant on the islands with 200 workers. The business failed in 1940 and the islands have remained deserted ever since.

In the 1970s, Koga Tatsushirō's descendents Zenji and Hanako Tatsushirō sold the islands to the Kurihara family of Saitama Prefecture. Hiroyuki Kurihara owns Uotsuri, Kita Kojima, and Minami Kojima. Hiroyuki's sister owns Kuba.

It should be noted that during the entire time the islands were in Japanese control until just BEFORE the U.S. was going to hand back administration of Japan to Japan (a span of 76 years), not a peep was heard from China or Taiwan regarding the islands. It wasn't until the U.S. was stepping down in Japan that China and Taiwan made their "claims" on the islands. This is highly suspicious. Why didn't China say anything after Japan's defeat? THAT'S when they should have been trying to reclaim lands they felt were theirs (and they DID in other cases) but China was silent on the Senkaku islands at that time. Their silence makes their case extremely weak.

Actually the world is waiting for China to declare that Space has been an undisputable part of China since ancient times. And they are going to pull out all sorts of thousands of years old records making reference to the "sky" and "stars" to prove it.

East Asia can solve its problems without help (or meddling) from Ms Clinton and the US State Department. The US Government, with regard to international diplomacy, is living in the past a little too much of the time. If one considers overt military action in the region then we should look first toward the US because they have employed this tactic more times than any other country over the past 20 years.

You are right Feihu, and hopefully the PLA leaders appreciate that the cause has always been to stop aggression by a "bully" against it's neighbors.

Is there an echo in the world? Same rhetoric, same result. NOTHING. Possession is 9/10th of the law, so Japan had better prepare to defends its property and rights. But, do it without the USA military. Yanks are coming home from various theatres, and Japan is going to be one of them.

U.S. is pushing all the right buttons. Reality is China has lack of real allies. Real strategic alliance or friendship is not a commodity that can be bought and bartered casually. It is based on shared security interests, fortified with similar ideological values and enduring trust. China excels in "transactional diplomacy" romping around the world with its fat checkbook, supporting usually poor, isolated, and decrepit regimes like Angola and Sudan in return for favorable terms on natural resources or voting against U.S. sponsored resolutions criticizing China's human rights record. China will remain deprive of dependable strategic allies because of geography, ideology, and policy. China is situated in one of the toughest geopolitical area in the world. It shares borders with Japan, India, and Russia; three major powers which have all engaged in military conflicts with China in the 20th century. It still has unresolved territorial disputes with Japan and India, and the Russians fear a horde of Chinese moving in and overwhelming the depopulated Russian far east. As natural geopolitical rivals, these countries do not make easy allies. Vietnam, is gearing up for another contest over disputed waters in the South China Sea. And just across the Yellow Sea is South Korea, historically a protectorate of the China, but now firmly an ally of the U.S. China's growing assertiveness on territorial disputes in the South China Sea caused Southeast Asian nations to realize that their best security bet remained the U.S. At the last East Asian Summit in Bali in 2011, most of the ASEAN countries spoke up in support of U.S. position on the South China Sea.
