It's not the first time European tyranny has been born in Austria.

One step in the wrong direction

11 ( +20 / -9 )

This is a bit much.

But for Health Minister Wolfgang Mueckstein, compulsory vaccination is aimed at both protecting the country against new waves and fighting new variants.

This is what keeps me up at night. The vaccine conveyor belt that you get on once you get jabbed. Will it ever end? Some countries now on their 4th jab. Ignore the fact that the majority of people who die from Covid are either obese or have some other medical condition. They should be promoting a healthy lifestyle. Thats what keeps people safe from Covid, not jabs.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

The government is not forcing you to vaccinate, they are just limiting your movements to the point it more beneficial.

Patently false.

10 ( +22 / -12 )

Draconian and evil. We are looking at a handful of countries now with very dangerous leaders, Austria, Canada and Germany being the prime suspects. Causing hatred, division and chaos for no other reason than they can.

Very unfortunate but if they deem it necessary to save people from themselves, so be it

Arguments along that line are often used to justify tyranny.

9 ( +21 / -12 )

Shame on them!

8 ( +11 / -3 )

If Austrians could be trusted to behave then this wouldn’t be necessary.

Submitting your body to the state is not "behaving", it's submitting.

Accept this physical assault against your body or pay us money.

They are wrong and we are right.

8 ( +14 / -6 )

Critics have also questioned the need for compulsion given the far milder nature of the Omicron variant.

Tyranny has no concern for health, logic, or common sense.

I hope these freedom seeking people can get themselves to a country

which stands for human rights.

A real shame it is not their homeland.

While Denmark has completely opened up, Finland plans to open up next week, Norway is now planning it, Sweden and England maintain only minimal restrictions, Austria of all countries goes full authoritarian. Shame on Austria. That government needs to be voted out pronto presto.

I wouldnt be surprised by Austria and Germany, given their track record....

Canada is a surprise, but then, like many leftists these days, Trudeau is more than happy to turn authoritarian when it suits. Pretty unbelievable to consider that Conservatives these days believe more in freedom of speech and freedom of movement than "so-called" Liberals.

@Lindsay

Historically speaking, there were a few instances, where mass vaccination has taken place and later turned out to cause widespread severe health problems. So, there is always a possibility that a negative effect could happen in some unexpected way. Especially when it comes to new technology such as mRNA vaccines.

Aside from that, would you really classify a virus that kills less that 1% of it's hosts as 'deadly'? Are you vaccinated against all other deadly viruses that exists? Including all types of flu?

Seems it was democratically decided

So was a previous regime that we should not mention to stay clear of Godwins law. That AUSTRIA of all countries turns to totalitarian measures is truly shocking.

5 ( +15 / -10 )

time to run away from austria

5 ( +12 / -7 )

Despite the threat of such a drastic measure, the vaccination rate in Austria has still failed to take off, languishing below the levels seen in France or Spain.

Vienna vaccination centers remain relatively quiet.

Additionally I wonder if the elite has considered that forcing anything on people makes them more suspicious of it? I have several friends over there who would consider at getting a shot but balk at the idea of being forced into it.

4 ( +12 / -8 )

I’m surprised by how many people are against this. There is no reason a healthy person should refuse to be vaccinated against a deadly virus.

Umm because I'm healthy and my body is my body. Give me a choice. Or leave me alone. And if I get it and end on hospital, I'll pay for whatever that costs. Anything else to say?

4 ( +9 / -5 )

Why is it that so many people equate the idea of opposing mandatory vaccination with opposing vaccines, period?

Ive had 3 shots of Pfizer and I oppose mandatory vaccines.

A lot of people I know feel the same. Why? Because they think its slippery slope. They think its unnecessary for a virus that kills less than 1% it infects and they think the bar should be higher for such a gross infrigement on basic rights. They also see that these vaccines are not particularly effective and seem to require regular boosters, which increases the odds of eventually getting unlucky with a bad, long lasting side effect. They want the freedom to choose to take that risk or not.

It is very, very possible, to be thankful for having the vaccines as an option, to appreciate the science behind it and to be able to make a judgement based on the overall pros and cons, as you see them.....while also being opposed to mandatory vaccines that see people lose their jobs and have their movement severely curtailed

disaffected grievance-driven conspiracy theorists

I know, I know. Anybody who questions the mainsteam orthodoxy is a heratic. No. Just average people with an understanding of history and where this can all lead combined with all the other factors I mentioned.

4 ( +9 / -5 )

Absolute madness. Anyone who can't see why genuinely has an intellectual growth problem.

3 ( +10 / -7 )

That sentence sums up the illogical anti vaxxer thinking.

if you don’t want the vaccine go live on a deserted island!!!

LOL. I strongly suggest you read my post again

You need to get back on your meds.

3 ( +8 / -5 )

I have several friends over there who would consider at getting a shot but balk at the idea of being forced into it.

I don't believe that for a second. Anyone who really believed in the efficacy of the vaccine would already have had the shot, given that Austria has had two million cases and 14,000 deaths from it. And so far, it's been voluntary. What are your friends waiting for, a personal invitation?

2 ( +7 / -5 )

So they're forcing this stuff into people when people have died from it, nobody knows the long-term effects, and they probably already have natural immunity by now for a virus with an IFR of 0.15 that's roughly equivalent to flu (maybe even less with omicron)...

Nobody knows what effect those lipid nanoparticles have on women’s fertility either

Still haven't had it, won't ever have it. Resist this tyranny.

Pretty unbelievable to consider that Conservatives these days believe more in freedom of speech and freedom of movement than "so-called" Liberals.

Interesting. So conservative Chancellor Karl Nehammer is a "so-called" liberal, is he? I don't think so. And real conservatives, in the true sense of the word, are probably more inclined to get vaccinated. Right-wing radicals and disaffected grievance-driven conspiracy theorists, on the other hand, are not.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

"We would have finished a long time ago (with the pandemic) if everyone had been vaccinated", said legal worker, Angelika Altmann.

Exactly, but then there are those that are paranoid and full of conspiracy theories!

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Additionally I wonder if the elite has considered that forcing anything on people makes them more suspicious of it?

Sounds like a communist argument, distrust of anyone with an education. Russia, Cambodia, China have carried out murderous purges with such ‘Elite’ arguments!!!

It's pretty heavy-handed but 'draconian and evil' - that's a bit of an extreme characterisation of the situation.

They are trying to save lives, and it's only a small jab. ;)

@Matt Hartwell:

There is nothing in the history of Fascism that would lead anyone with an acceptable knowledge of history to equate a public health measure in a time of pandemic with the rise of said Fascism. Nothing. This kind of hysterical exaggeration by the opponents of vaccination in an effort to undermine every sensible measure taken over the past two years to protect citizens against the worst effects of a virus that has probably killed 10 million people minimum is politically and ideologically driven, and driven by a coalition of conservative, radical right, nihilist libertarian and other so-called “freedom” activists with a dodgy idea of “rights” and no idea of “responsibilities”. Every single Doomsday prediction made by Covid deniers since all this started, especially about the death of democracy, has been proved wrong. That we’ve got as far as we have is despite your so-called “average people”, who are in fact not average at all. Don’t try and claim “average people” as being on your side. Average people, which almost by definition means the vast majority, have accepted what had to be done and got on with the job of putting humanity in the situation we’re in now - on the verge of reaching a liveable accommodation with the virus. The rest, the deniers, with their fake science alternatives and their self-serving arguments, have done nothing but get in the way.

I don’t think people who refuse to be vaccinated should be physically forced to take the vaccinations, and it probably won’t come to that. But tell you what, it would be hard to feel sorry for them if they were.

-5 ( +5 / -10 )

Arguments along that line are often used to justify tyranny.

Tyranny doesn't need justification lol

-6 ( +7 / -13 )

So was a previous regime that we should not mention to stay clear of Godwins law. That AUSTRIA of all countries turns to totalitarian measures is truly shocking.

Can you think a little and restate that?

You seem to be saying something important, I dont want to misunderstand you.

-6 ( +5 / -11 )

Granted, it's a little harsh but those who refused to get vaccinated even though they were medically able to have basically forced the government's hand at this point. For the health and safety of everyone, and to ensure that the country and population have a future, well, if it comes down to mandatory vaccinations then so be it.

-6 ( +5 / -11 )

That sentence sums up the illogical anti vaxxer thinking.

They think its unnecessary for a virus that kills less than 1% it infects and they think the bar should be higher for such a gross infrigement on basic rights.

People who think just about themselves and not the people around them are the ones who are the greatest threat to the society.

Stop thinking just about yourself, you don’t live in Silos.

if you don’t want the vaccine go live on a deserted island!!!

-7 ( +4 / -11 )

Vaccines save lives.

With the sheer amount of easily accessible authoritative information, only the really dumb don't realize that.

People used to die for what they believe in. And people who knew them celebrate and treasure their memory of them.

Now people die because they failed to understand and failed to understand they don't understand.

People who knew them still remember them, but in disgust.

Enemies laughing derisively for their idiocy.

And friends and families cursing them for their stupidity.

-8 ( +5 / -13 )

Tora - Umm because I'm healthy and my body is my body. Give me a choice. Or leave me alone. And if I get it and end on hospital, I'll pay for whatever that costs. Anything else to say?

And, you don’t care how many people die with you. How about your parents, wife or kids? It’s not your body. It’s the bodies of 7 billion people.

-8 ( +3 / -11 )

I’m surprised by how many people are against this. There is no reason a healthy person should refuse to be vaccinated against a deadly virus.

-9 ( +6 / -15 )

It's official: From Saturday, Austrians over the age of 18 must be vaccinated against COVID-19 or face the possibility of a heavy fine, an unprecedented measure in the European Union.

Wonderful, that’s the only way to deal with the anti vaxxer idiots.

This ignorant lot whine about their freedoms while putting others’ lives at risk.

Wish other countries follow suit!!!

-11 ( +11 / -22 )

I wouldnt be surprised by Austria and Germany, given their track record....

Track record in what, taking in refugees, developing a robust economy, putting the welfare of their citizens above all!!!

I am sure you love putin’s or orban’s track record, the idiot anti vaxxers always gravitate towards murderous dictators while whining about their rights!,,

-12 ( +7 / -19 )

The government is not forcing you to vaccinate, they are just limiting your movements to the point it more beneficial. As Austria is part of the European union, it’s citizens have the option to leave Austria.

-13 ( +15 / -28 )

Smart move Austria.

-13 ( +3 / -16 )
