Good looking girl no doubt. Wish she'd stop texting me though.

This seems like an incredible anachronism.

This seems like an incredible anachronism.

An anachronism! These days it is 'Look, but don't touch. Show no emotion. Don't even think!' The stuff about social advancement, respect to and empowerment of women comes a very distant second.

How about this: Congratulations to Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters! You got it all, in your inimitable femininity. Good luck to you!

What? No 'I've seen better looking girls on the train' yet?

Have to say as a bloke who prefers women with short-hairstyles am rarely 'wowed' by miss universe contestants. They all look pretty much the same to me i.e. very long hair and/or 80s hairstyles. Is long hair a requirement in miss universe/world comps? Has to be.

Almost quaint in an archaic way.

Good god I thought this had died years ago, don't remember seeing it for decades. Amazed it is still around.

Surely ‘the contestant representing South Africa’ is simply ‘Miss South Africa’, no?

@lucabrasi,

After conducting extensive research, it seems you are correct. But it's not so straightforward. There are Miss Universe and Miss World contests, and so the titles held by the contestants may not be just the name of their countries. For example, Japan's contestant, Abe Momoko, is titled Miss Universe Japan and not just Miss Japan. There is also a Miss World Japan, Yoshikawa Priyanka, who I presume will enter the Miss World contest.

@goldorak,

Miss Tanzania has short hair. I'd have voted for her too.

@alba

Thanks. Hope you’re not worn out, after all that research ; )

Miss Universe, Mr Universe, etc. I wonder when the Lefties are going to start setting their sights upon these events and start raising the Sex/Color/Gender issue... for example in the UK Teachers are being told that they have to use gender neutral terms in order to avoid harming the feelings of those who have Gender issues...

so by implication, those two events such be banned with the UK, and perhaps elsewhere where such lunacy reigns.

Shows like these belong in the 1950s. But they're not banned. They're just boring and objectifying.

As for UK education and gender terms, if that's true, so what? How does it affect any of us here today?

There's one particular region of the UK that still has segregated schools because of religion. In this day and age. Which actually does affect people. Can you guess what part of the UK that might be?

I'd rather see integration and respect for pupils than divisive, archaic standards from yesteryear.

They're just boring and objectifying.

I certainly find then boring, but mainly for the reason goldorak mentioned, they all look the same*. But I don't get the objectifying issue. We treat women and men as objects in various contexts - heartthrobs, pinups, superstars, dreamboats, etc. Some people watch movies or TV to see their favorite actors, actresses, sport stars, singers, etc. Is there really a fundamental difference between sports awards, movies awards and awards for just looking good? Let's not deny beauty, however it's beheld.

except for Miss Tanzania :-)
