And the carnage shall continue for as long as guns are out of control.

Guns, guns and more guns. It's getting worse and worse year by year, like climate change.

How much more of this madness can America take?

6 ( +8 / -2 )

The blame is squarely on the robber /murderer. FYI, criminals don't get their weapons through the legal process.

Maybe he was a good guy with a gun until yesterday. FYI, just so you know, as you seem to be unaware, most guns used in mass shootings were purchased legally.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Nevada is also an open carry state and a lot of gun owners travel there to buy at gun shows.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

California is getting lax on its prosecution of crime.

Then explain why only six states in the US have lower rates of death by firearm than California has?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

But wait there are NO red states "next to California"

Yes there is. Arizona. The last time I visited there people were walking around with handguns in holsters and it was perfectly legal. I have never gone back there again.

Nobody has register firearms in Arizona. Nobody is required to have a permit for concealed carry of a weapon in Arizona either. Background checks for gun sales are only required for sales by gun shops and not for private sales of firearms. Ghost guns are legal in Arizona. Not surprisingly Arizona's rate of death by firearms per 100,000 population is twice that of California; 16.7 deaths per 100,000 population for Arizona compared to 8.5 deaths per 100,000 population for California.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Of course the smug answer you will hear from certain parties is that more people should carry firearms so a "good guy" could have killed the perp. But for 2020 out of over 45,000 total firearm deaths, less than 600 involved self defense and the great majority of these were by police officers. The tragedy is that over 60% of firearm deaths are suicides.

Arizona has a Republican Governor and Republican majorities in both houses. Most counties in the state are majority Republican.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Easy access to guns paired with a chronic public problem with mental health and the promotion of the idea that people should be free to do as they like no matter what.

Seems like the leading cause of death in Arizona tends to be cancer and drug overdose.

Be that as it may, Arizonans manage to kill themselves and others with firearms at twice the rate of Californians. The difference in their gun laws makes a real difference in how many people die from firearms.

But since you mentioned drug overdoses, the rate of death by overdose for California is 21.8 per 100,000 residents. The rate of death by overdose for Arizona is 35.8 per 100,000 residents and that of Nevada is 26 per 100,000 residents. Oh look, California does something else better than its neighbors. But then California has the second greatest life expectancy in the US bettered only by Hawaii. We all have to die of something but in California you live longer and are less likely to die from a gunshot or drug overdose.

In the 1880s? Was just there this March, in Tucson. Didn't see anyone walking around with handguns in holsters.

Go out to some of the farm towns between Tuscon and Phoenix and you will see people walking around with holstered handguns. This was just a few years ago.

Its corporate responsibility for these chains like 7-11 to provide guns and training to their employees.

They are trained to be non-confrontational and give the crook whatever they want. Don't give the crook any reason to shoot anybody. Whatever money is in the cash drawer or safe can be replaced through insurance. It's just a job. It's not worth dying over. There are enough high quality cameras in those stores that the crook will in most cases be identified and found quickly.

I live in Arizona now. I think the heat melts the brains of most people here.

I noticed that a lot of car door handles and outside door knobs had socks stretched over them so you don't burn your hand. Even still car vinyl or leather seats in shorts can be treacherous!

Tell that to the Cripa, bloods, 18th Street and MS-13, I’m sure they disagree.

The numbers don't lie. Death by firearm is death by firearm and California has the 7th lowest rate of deaths by firearm of the 50 US states. Every state has gangs but California is doing better than most at reducing the bloodshed.

Crips and Bloods agreed to a cease fire. So far it is holding, and it had nothing to do with any white man's law. Nipsy Hussle preached black entrepreneurship and prosperity, which are hard to achieve when people are shooting at each other. His rap was so well regarded by both gangs that they seem to have taken his message to heart and agreed to cease their decades long feud. Sometimes a new law and longer sentences aren't the only solutions to a problem.

California needs to toughen up its criminal laws.

Ok, everything the shooter did is highly illegal and can be punished by life in prison or even death. What else do you want? Keep in mind the rate of death by firearms per 100,000 population in California is seventh lowest of the 50 states in the US. California is doing a better job than the great majority of states in this regard.

or as always, the gun came from the red state next to California. /s

But wait there are NO red states "next to California".

As always the naive logic of the silly gun lovers..

The state doesn't matter if it's blue or red, the problem is the WHOLE COUNTRY..

Firearms are out of control in ALL STATES, thinking about the color of each state is something silly and senseless..

The country is bleeding out and blood, suffering and death have no political party..

PSril many people in US think they are so strong and first world, but they are not realizing that the country is falling to pieces, making it easier for China to reach the top of the world...

a day when the national 7-Eleven brand is celebrating its 95th birthday by giving out free Slurpee drinks.

why not just get a free Slurpee drink?

I live in Arizona now. I think the heat melts the brains of most people here. I’m moving in a couple months. The people I mostly see with guns are yahoo’s in the back of 15’ high pickup trucks driving in circles in the Costco parking lot with with giant Trump and confederate flags.

Strange place.

Bass: Why? I have family in Arizona,

Good for you. Some of us actually live in Arizona. And it's odd the you bring up your "family in Arizona" many years after joining this board.

In short, you have no idea what Arizonans think. Go away.

Ok, California has other problems like homelessness, drug usage, highest taxed, highest real estate market,

California has the lowest effective property tax rate in the US. When you buy a piece of land in California the property taxes are set at 1% of assessed value, one of the lower tax rates in the US. However, assessed value and market value are two different things in California. Unlike any other state, the assessed value is set at market value at purchase, but because of a 1978 ballot initiative called Proposition 13 the assessed value may not rise more than 2% per year regardless of what the market value does. The value of your home could go up 25% in two years but the assessed value will rise no more than 4% over those same two years. However if the value of your property falls your assessed value will fall. The net effect is that the effective property tax rate in California is 0.7% of market value.

Move to Texas where taxes are low. Right? Not so fast. A buddy of mine was bragging about how much he is saving by moving from California to just outside Dallas. His new home in Texas cost about the same as mine, but his property tax rate is 2.5% of market value and there is no Prop 13 to prevent his assessed value from rising with rising property values as there is in California. Even though Texas has no state income tax, his property taxes alone are a bit more than what I pay California for property and income taxes on similar incomes. Meanwhile the sales tax is the same as it is in my city in California.

Florida for example has a higher property tax rate than California (but lower than Texas), no income taxes but the state applies sales taxes to labor, services and rent. Imagine paying sales taxes on rent! The moral of the story is that while each state has a different menu of taxes, they all take pretty close to the same percent of your income in taxes.

Drug ooverdose is rapidly increasing in states like California and with the continued rise in homelessness it will be the major cause of death.

Bass logic: The issue you brought up that currently exists doesn't matter, because of this extremist right-wing future issue I think will happen.

Seems legit.

Yes there is. Arizona

thats interesting.

a supposed red state that voted for a Dem for President and has both Senators as Democrats as well.

they dont seem to vote very well, do they?

The 7 Eleven serial killer is still out there.

Perhaps argue about that instead of guns

Be that as it may, Arizonans manage to kill themselves and others with firearms at twice the rate of Californians.

Ok, California has other problems like homelessness, drug usage, highest taxed, highest real estate market, so when you had the growing despair and desperation that California is experiencing, it’s no wonder states like Arizona seen so attractive for so many.

The difference in their gun laws makes a real difference in how many people die from firearms.

I have a big family across 13 states, is that a problem?

In short, you have no idea what Arizonans think. Go away.

No reason to, it’s a free world.

Crips and Bloods agreed to a cease fire.

And they’re still beefing, not like the old days, but they’re beefing.

The shootings appear to have occurred after robberies or attempted robberies at the four convenience stores on July 11, or 7/11 — a day when the national 7-Eleven brand is celebrating its 95th birthday by giving out free Slurpee drinks.

Again, a senseless act by a criminal.

California needs to toughen up its criminal laws.

Saw a bunch of shops selling marijuana legally.

Didn't venture there. Saw rifles on rifle racks on pickup trucks though. But if you are in farmland, well, I can see the reason for packing, but I wouldn't worry about them.

Ok, everything the shooter did is highly illegal and can be punished by life in prison or even death. What else do you want?

California is getting lax on its prosecution of crime. I would rather walk in a Tucson farm town than in San Francisco. Lenient laws are emboldening criminals.
