Mexico is a country desperately in need of gun rights and militias. The government and police are utterly flaccid and the gangs are out of control.

But the stupid, idiot government of Mexico has made it so that their law abiding citizens can only purchase guns in an unmarked, virtually unpublicized location in Mexico City. I am not kidding. One gun store in the country, run by the government, and they are basically hiding it.

Then here is the rule that even if you manage to get a gun, you are not allowed to take it outside your home.

Meanwhile the gangs roam the land with automatic weapons and the police do nothing but smile and wave.

All the guns used by the gangs are from the US. Drugs go north. Guns go south.

Mexico's GDP is ranked 14th in the world which is quite strong yet 43% live in poverty. When almost half the population live in poverty, people will resort to crime. Mexico is a country desperately in need of wealth distribution, social, and economic reform not gun laws.

Mexico is a country that is up and coming. If Mexico could get rid of its corruption, gangs and of course the cartel they could very well do what China did on a larger manufacturing scale. All the goods can flow through and from south America on a rail or freeway system. There would be no need for barges and overseas oceananic shipping also cheap labor. Look for Mexico to thrive.

Not saying it wouldn't be nice to see, but I think the propsects of getting rid of the cartels are extremely low. They have been running parts of Mexico for decades now and socialists like AMLO prefer appeasement rather than confrontation.

The gdp per capita is much much lower than 14th. It is in the neighborhood of Serbia and Bulgaria. That being said, it is quite high for Latin America. What they definitely don't need is to lose their trade agreements with the US.

You are correct. There probably could have been a solution at some point in the past where Mexico and the US could have sealed their borders for both of their benefits. It's probably too late for that now. I think if Mexico fortified their southern border, it could provide a way to economically get out of their situation but I'm not sure there is a precedent for a country with a large crime problem to actually solve it.

Despite Mexican laws, guns are ubiquitous in Mexico. Not just the narcos have them. There are local militias and farmers groups that are armed. The nation is flooded with firearms. You can thank the US for that because it is just so easy for a straw buyer to buy up guns in US gun shops and drive them across the border into Mexico.

Mexico could have sealed their borders long ago, particularly their southern border. They should at least try solving their problems rather than blaming others.
