Sad to see children abused with all this mask wearing and social distancing. That is not good for them, both mentally and physically.

Deciding how to reopen

School officials should make decisions about school reopening based on available data including levels of community transmission and their capacity to implement appropriate mitigation measures in schools to protect students, teachers, administrators, and other staff. Schools should also consider other aspects of students’ risk and wellbeing that arise when schools do not reopen for in-person classes. This includes the potential adverse impacts on students’ social-emotional, behavioral, and mental health, as well as the critical services provided to students to help mitigate health disparities and serve children in need, such as school lunch programs, special education services, after-school programs and mental health services.

The unique and critical role that schools play makes them a priority for reopening and remaining open, enabling students to receive both academic instruction and enable the provision of other critical services and supports. By strictly implementing mitigation strategies, schools will be able to meet the needs of their students and community, while reducing the risk of COVID-19 spread.

The agency acknowledged that may be an underestimate

It's difficult to trust any numbers coming from the Trump administration, or any government anywhere.

What is clear is the virus has had huge effects on populations everywhere and those problems aren't going away any time soon.

The more the pandemic deniers and other eugenicists say ignore the virus and get back to serving the needs of the 'elite' 'establishment', the longer the virus will continue to harm people everywhere. Especially those who are NOT 'elites'.

It's not been just another flu/cold/hepatitis, regardless what the pandemic deniers and other eugenicists keep saying.

6 of those 9 had underlying conditions.

Really?

As the United States’ covid-19 death toll moves relentlessly beyond 200,000, data shows that only about 100 children and teenagers have died of the disease,

https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/covid-children-deaths/2020/09/25/9df39bf4-fdad-11ea-8d05-9beaaa91c71f_story.html

and here is some more info:

Majority of kids who die of coronavirus are Hispanic, Black, or Native American, CDC finds

Hispanic, Black and Native American children accounted for 78% of those deaths even though those groups represent just 41% of the United States population

What say you?

Trump and his fellow 'elite' have shown they have zero regard for anyone they consider 'others', i.e. those at the lower end of the economic spectrum, especially if they're Black, Hispanic or Native.

Trump's just carrying on policies of rightwing Republicans who are more concerned about their fellow global elite than they are their own fellow citizens.

Trump is willingly, perhaps because he's in such a deep financial hole being used by a rightwing billionaire faction (see Koch, Barr and Federalist Society; Mnuchin and Wall Street/Rothschild) who see him as their tool.

Right now, most of Africa seems more competent, safer and wiser than the 'best country in the world'.

Come on, let's all shout 'The best is yet to come!'

Sigh. I detest who my wife calls "the Rooster" (walks around cluck cluck cluck then pecks at something sending all the other creatures in the barnyard running around flapping and sqwaking), but let's stick to reality. The Koch brothers are Trumps enemy on the right having famously and very publicly fallen out with him two years ago and the ancestors of the Rothschilds haven't mattered financially in 150 years. Their former banks don't even make it into the EU's top 20 banks, and no EU based bank makes it into the global top ten. Those are all American or Chinese banks. Any time someone drags out the old anti semitic Rothchilds line you know they are full of hooey.

Sad to see children abused with all this mask wearing and social distancing. That is not good for them, both mentally and physically.

Sad to see people commenting without even reading the headline.

The headline and article are dealing with CASES. Constantly wearing a mask and all the other measures they are taking is not good for them, for their mental condition, for their immune system, and for their overall health.

And as Blacklabel mentioned:

"There have been 9 deaths in the USA from COVID for ages 0-17.

6 of those 9 had underlying conditions."

And I would reword that last bit to: 6 of those 9 had known underlying conditions (I suspect the other 3 had unknown ones).

COVID-19 cases rising among U.S. children as schools reopen

Gee, maybe it's because of someone hiding the truth and deliberately misinforming the American people...

*Trump stated on tape to Bob Woodward in Feb and Mar that he knew COVID was "a killer", "deadly", it "rips you apart", it's "highly contagious - airborne", "it's the plague". He also acknowledged in Mar that the virus isn't just affecting old people, it's "young people too - plenty of young people". But then in May he said to open schools because; "it has very little impact on young people"....*

Among the overall US population about 40% are deficient in vitamin D. The number jumps up to about 80% for Blacks (it's also high for Hispanic and Native Americans). But why aren't they screaming about his on the MSM? Why isn't Fauci saying anything about this? Fauci himself apparently takes high doses of vitamin D daily. Not having kids playing outside is just making things worse!

BTW, the 9 children deaths from Covid19 was from May; the current number is of course higher but it's still a very low number.

Factually incorrect. Go to the CDC website below - it shows 35 deaths in the US strictly from COVID in the age group 0-4. The number for age 5-18 is 77....total = 102....and the cutoff for the data was 19 Sep...

https://data.cdc.gov/NCHS/Provisional-COVID-19-Deaths-Focus-on-Ages-0-18-Yea/nr4s-juj3

More misinformation from Trump and his supporters...

And we wonder why our death toll is now over 200K...

The actual number is ten times higher (94) and growing fast now that schools are back in session. I reckon you don't have kids in school but from experience, if one kids gets something in elementary school, the whole class has it and soon thereafter their parents. I don't want our little boy to bring that virus home and infect momma and I. Oh gee never thought of that did you? The kid gets sick and recovers, assuming they don't later come down with that horrible inflammatory syndrome that affects some kids who had Covid-19. But the parents get really sick and suffer months of lingering symptoms, fatigue and lung damage. Now spin us a nice fairy tail how that benefits our family. Go ahead and try. It's hard work but we'll keep our boy at home thank you very much.

People in the US believe the lies and buy things they don't need from fast talking sales pukes just like Donald Trump every single day in the US. They believe late night infomercials like they are the gospel. The US seem uniquely weak when it comes to believing hucksters. This is how people like Donald Trump get rich. It's not the product because the product is never what they claim, it's the bs story they weave to get you to part with your hard earned.

Let’s take a look at the death rate. Almost zero, like a cold for kids.

-9 ( +1 / -10 )

A study says 'Reopening US college/university campuses for in-person classes in late summer could be associated with 3,000 extra cases daily..'. Is it absolutely true?

The words "could be" connotes uncertainty and speculation We have been overwhelmed by lots of uncertainties in this critical and difficult time. They are becoming very stressful if not utterly depressive. Can we not have less speculative element in all study or research findings/reports?

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Lower death rate? How does anybody of you already know? Including already known and still unknown long term effects you don’t even know if they ever reach the age group of those who deceased since early spring. In addition, children are of course equally getting and spreading the virus like adults. A smaller surface in mouth , throat or lung on the one side, but a much higher breathing frequency on the other side, to give you a little idea. Just don’t press them narrowly altogether into classrooms, playgrounds or events. Well, nobody wants to hear all that... That’s why already over a million worldwide cannot even hear it anymore, even if they wanted for an eternity.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Not surprising.  question is how many are severely affected?

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

the coronavirus is increasingly infecting American children and teens in a trend authorities say appears fuelled by school reopening's and the resumption of sports, playdates and other activities.

This must be fake news.  Cult leader Trump said it didn't affect children.  Antifia must be behind this.

The headline and article are dealing with CASES. Constantly wearing a mask and all the other measures they are taking is not good for them, for their mental condition, for their immune system, and for their overall health.

Scientific data proves you wrong. The risk of catching COVID-19 and developing serious complications that can result in permanent disabilities or death is higher than the possibility of damage from wearing a mask.

Pediatricians say that not wearing a mask is worse for their health, and listening to them has the advantage of not depending on a magical conspiracy controlling all the science in the world for no real reason.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Sad to see children abused with all this mask wearing and social distancing. That is not good for them, both mentally and physically.

As opposed to feeling responsible for family members or friends get infected, get sick, and possibly die

Kids in the US are used to these precautions now. They've already months of practice when school was out since Spring. They see everybody else wearing masks and social distancing every day too. They see their friends wearing their own custom masks like fashion. This is not new to them - the only thing new is them doing it in school now that school is back

The kids have been fine with these precautions for months. This is not something that was foisted on them suddenly just yesterday. They've already been doing it everywhere indoors where lots of strangers. They'll be fine doing it in school too

6 ( +6 / -0 )

There are a number of studies demonstrating that masks have limited (if any) benefit against Covid-19 among the general population. Mask wearing has some direct negative health effects. If you're always breathing through a mask, you don't challenge your immune system as much as breathing freely. This constant social distancing and all the other stress is not good, especially for kids.

I find all this child abuse sickening.

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

There are a number of studies demonstrating that masks have limited (if any) benefit against Covid-19 among the general population.

References, you have put a lot of studies that say the opposite of what you understood (or were told they said). How come that all medical professional associations, that have access to everything that you have read and understand it much better than you say that mask are very likely a useful part of the measures against the pandemic? Is is again the magical conspiracy that makes all of them in the world lie?

Mask wearing has some direct negative health effects. If you're always breathing through a mask, you don't challenge your immune system as much as breathing freely.

Again, references, it does not matter how much you believe something, if you don't have objective qualified data to prove it then it is just your personal belief. Not a single pediatrician or immunology association in the world share your views, and they know the topic very well.

This constant social distancing and all the other stress is not good, especially for kids.

But it is still much better than the risk of catching and carrying COVID-19, the same as vaccines, everything has a risk, but an effective measure have less risks than letting the natural infection run its course, specially one for which every week or so we keep finding new long term consequences, including some serious ones specific for children that had the infection without apparent symptoms.

Pukey

Right now, most of Africa seems more competent, safer and wiser than the 'best country in the world'.

Africa's population is extremely young, and generally not overweight and diabetic. And btw, the hight US death rates are in a small cluster of states: NY, Massachussetts, Connecticut. Take those out and the US average is quite low.

....which is almost nothing, considering this is the total over 8 months.

And how do you get to "strictly from COVID"? The footnote in your table says:

"COVID-19 deaths are those with confirmed or presumed COVID-19, coded to ICD-10 code U07.1."

"Presumed Covid" sounds a bit different to me than "strictly from Covid".

Let’s take a look at the death rate. Almost zero, like a cold for kids.

oh man people just dont get, if kids catch it then take it home and spread it to their parents grand parent

who have a higher probability of dying from it.

I know my son is currently quarantined in his room because two boys in his class tested positive, hes been tested with the rest of his grade will know the results tomorrow, its highly likely that he negative as hes showing no symptoms but we still have to distance him away from the rest of the family as a precaution for our health. we live in a semi rural area of Japan that has been up until now covid free, yes everybody wears masks social distance spray alcohol on their hands leaving the store etc

The fools on here that continue to downplay this virus just hope karma doesn't come calling, winter is coming soon and this could get far worse before it gets better especially in the US

The words "could be" connotes uncertainty and speculation

Sigh. It would sure be nice if more people studied statistics in high school or college and understood why those of us who deal with big numbers in our professions express them in terms of ranges of possible values. If you can test every possible subject there is no error. You will know exactly how many times an event of interest occurred. However if you can only test some of the population you automatically introduce a range of possible values that you could observe if you had the ability to test the entire population. That range of values, however, can be determined with a great deal of precision, usually enough so that one may say the value for the total population is 95% certain to lie between a calculated high and low value. From this you can determine a most likely value. This is the opposite of speculation. It is solid mathematics but knowing the popularity of math and statistics (sometimes jokingly called "sadistics") among students my comment will not be voted into negative oblivion. America is not a quantitative society. Few are, to our detriment.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

I find all this child abuse sickening.

This constant social distancing and all the other stress is not good, especially for kids.

Schools have to implement masks and social distancing because they don't want to be responsible as being the virus spreader center of the township. Look what happens to sports teams that get infected - they are forced to shut down. And so are schools will be forced to shut down by the town if the school is found to be spreading the virus to the rest of the town.

If it's a choice between (A) staying at home and doing online schooling all by their lonesome, or (B) going to school and socializing with their friends but on the condition that they have to wear masks and social distancing in order to keep the school from shutting down, most kids would choose (B) the latter. They'd rather wear masks and social distancing than be left out of their social circles and be missing out on the happenings with their friends.

Being alone and missing on socializing would be worse on their psyche and state of mind and can lead to depression. Now that's child abuse. Some things are more important to kids and their growth (friends and socializing) than the ideology of wearing masks and social distancing.

(Meanwhile, those kids and parents who feel safer staying at home and away from crowds still have the option to continue online schooling provided by the school.)
