Coyotes kill woman hiker in Canadian park

Well, at least she was not walking around with a cowbell on. That would have been uncool.

RIP young lady.

I always carry a 16 ton weight and a few sticks of dynamite when hiking in coyote country.

Naive, romantic type probably tried to make friends with wildlife.

Time to clear out the Coyotes for a 50 mile radius. Cull the bad blood like we do with dogs.

She's a teenage girl hiking alone in the wilderness. Gotta question her intelligence. (Coyotes - 1 Teenage Canadian folksingers - 0)

This is just horrific; coyotes simply aren't supposed to do that.

Very sad story. Coyotes are opportunists just like any predator/scavenger. Eastern coyotes are bigger than their western counterpart, and some say they are more of a brush wolf. They can be up to 70 lbs. If the deer population is down, she probably looked like a meal given her size. Always carry a weapon or at least a good solid hiking stick in the woods.

Unfortunately there is not much you can as coyotes are scavengers, so you can't play dead and they're to fast to bear mace. That is the risk you take when hiking alone, poor girl.

Who the heck hikes alone in an area as isolated as Cape Breton? Even in Stanley Park in the middle of Vancouver coyotes have been caught on film attempting to steal children away from families while they are picnicking! RIP on one hand but I shake my head and say, "City folk!" on the other.

Not sure what they say Toronto, but in Vancouver, which has a hugely diverse, but heavily Punjabi and ex Hong Kong Chinese populated, many of these good folks drive across the 10,000 plus Km Trans Canada Highway not long after they arrive. They proudly declare they've been across and seen Canada, although few to none realize that Newfoundland exists across the pond from Nova Scotia.

Anyway, they rarely venture more than 50 metres off Highway One, to either a shopping mall, a motel or a gas station. Yet, they consider themselves seasoned Canadians, having seen "Christmas trees" in the Rockies en route.

In Vancouver they're called "One-Fifties" Yet, in Vancouver, where coyotes abound, they still put up little cute signs saying "Kitty Lost" or "Puppy Lost" with the required tear-jerking photo, on trees, on fences and in convenience store and gas station windows. They just don't get it. Welcome to non 905 area code Canada. You're ON the menu!

And don't get me started on the "One Fifties" who feed black bears from their Lexuses or try to pet grizzlies when they cross into the Yukon! City folk!

I would suggest adding a knife and a brand new lighter, still in the package to your list of things never to go into the woods without.

30061015 hit it on the head. Any time your out in the wild take something to protect yourself. Walking sticks, repellent sprays etc will keep animals away from you. Sad news.

Coyotes aren't supposed to do that? They were hungry predators; what do you think they would do? It's more rare than with bears or cougars (not the over 40 variety...) but it does happen. In my old neighborhood the coyotes were going through screen doors to get people's cats and yap dogs. One neighbor got a German Shepherd because the coyotes were coming up to the back door and eyeing up her toddler. It's a pity it happened but nature is NOT similar to what "Bambi" presented. Hiking alone in that type of woods should be done with more than one person and with some sort of defense.
