Always entertaining to hear the opinions of people 8,000 miles away with limited new sources.

Swan ... also labelled the Tea Party wing of the Republicans as "extreme".

I'll take that as a compliment. Freedom, liberty, and personal responsibility are always considered "extreme" by government bureaucrats who exploit the dependence of others for their own political gain.

"limited news sources"

Apologies for the typo.

-10 ( +3 / -13 )

Its true. Cranks and crazies have taken over. That's the very bad news. 'Cause the cranks and crazies will most likely hold onto the House.

The real good news is Americans understand this. And will not only re-elect President Obama, but will increase the number of Dems in the Senate. And, if Romney continues to implode, we may even take back the House.

9 ( +13 / -4 )

You gotta love those Australians for their frank talk. Now all Amerians need to do is find a way to get them to take back Rupert Murdoch and his insidious Fox News.

12 ( +15 / -3 )

Exactly. It's no surprise that those looking from the outside in are losing respect for the States when they see the Tea Party cranks and evangelical crazies. I know many of my colleagues asked how Sarah Palin was ever taken seriously in a developed country. Creationist crackpots and Tea Party nutcases are something which belong in underdeveloped theocracies or uneducated banana republics, not in the world's largest economy.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

"Cranks and crazies"? The Aussies must think it was the Tea Party behind the "Occupy" protests/vandalism.

-14 ( +4 / -18 )

@"these Australians" and"The Aussies must think" Well, there's one official named Wayne Swan who criticized the one-issue Taxed Enough Already! party. Don't see where he mentioned the Occupy movement, so how do you know what he thinks about it?

"limited news sources" Wayne Swan is banned from using the internet to get unlimited news from America? Huh?

4 ( +6 / -2 )

The Republican Party’s position on the U.S. budget had led a year ago to the deadlock in negotiations, Swan said, to prevent the looming “fiscal cliff”—nearly $600 billion in planned spending cuts and tax hikes that will bite early next year.

I'm actually looking forward to this. I've been saying for years that the best thing that Washington could do for the country would be to sit on their hands. Now they've decided to do so and the budget is actually being cut, it's a miracle. Not by nearly enough of course, I'd love nothing more than to see a 40% reduction in welfare spending and similar massive cuts in defense, but you've got to start somewhere I suppose.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Good on ya Mr. Swan!

-8 ( +3 / -11 )

They have been'cranks & crazies' since 2001! Just nobody notice until 2008 when Bush Jr step down!

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Yes, cranks and crazies have taken over the Republican party. I believe in small government too and considered myself a Republican, but there is no reason or rationale to the party now.

Romney is another nutbag without a clue, and a plutocrat to boot.

I said it to friends earlier, the Republican party will self-destruct before the end of the year. Romney had the 47% and dependency comment attributed to many hard working and voting Americans. Any intelligent person could tell Romney is telling half truths. We had the "legitimate rape" comment, which is something Ryan and many other crazies supported. Romney attacking the governments statements about the Bengazi Embassy attack before knowing what went on. Romney's idiotic criticism of the London Olympics, a round about way to say he was responsible for having an awesome Olympics by belittling the UK. Romney expects illegal aliens to step up and self-deport themselves. Huh? That will not happen. He also thinks hispanics will support him after making a statement like that. He said Palestinians will never get a nation state, and we are wasting our time trying to find peace for them and Israel. He wan't born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he had no help from his father who was a CEO of a automotive company, senator, etc., he made all his money on his own. The Republicans and the talk show crazies would call Fast and Furious a huge Obama conspiracy to attack gun laws by purposefully getting a border guard killed with an assault rifle.

Romney is just too out of touch, but so is the rest of the Republican party and all the right wing talk shows. Well, I say too out of touch, but there is still a lot of crazies supporting them.

11 ( +11 / -0 )

Shoot the messenger.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

OldHawk : I'll take that as a compliment. Freedom, liberty, and personal responsibility are always considered "extreme" by government bureaucrats who exploit the dependence of others for their own political gain.

Well, if the Republicans offered those things (Freedom and Liberty (personal responsibility is a part of liberty)), I would be right there with them. Republicans and the extreme right want to instill their sense of morality on everyone. For example, why are the Republicans and the extreme types still talking about abortion? Didn't they read Roe v. Wade? It is history, American law supports freedom of choice.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

" “Despite President Obama’s goodwill and strong efforts,"

This is the point where the BS flag starts getting waved.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Virtuoso:

" You gotta love those Australians for their frank talk. "

Absolutely. Even if he is an idiot, he should have the right to say his opinion.

" Now all Amerians need to do is find a way to get them to take back Rupert Murdoch and his insidious Fox News. "

Oh? So that would leave the US media landscape as a uniform democrat-party biased alphabet soup. Fox News is the only large news organization that deviates from the political bias of the majority. So you prefer to have it all uniform, without even one single dissident? Some improvement...

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

Oh? So that would leave the US media landscape as a uniform democrat-party biased alphabet soup. Fox News is the only large news organization that deviates from the political bias of the majority. So you prefer to have it all uniform, without even one single dissident? Some improvement...

I want facts not opinions from the news. Fox News doesn't qualify as news.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Hey OldHawk you have really touched the nerve of the liberal posters on JT -- I'm jealous. Most of the posters are part of the 47% (or wish they were) who pay no federal income tax and think Obama is the next best thing to the Second Coming. When you can say there is a war on women, but we cannot say there is a war on Islamic terrorists and when they blame the murder of a US Ambassador and three staffers on a movie trailer and then use taxpayer money to make apologies to Muslims when its our constitutional right of free speech (remember the 1st Amendment) then its the Dems this Aussie should be calling cranks and crazies. Lets see if I can get over 20 negatives for stating the truth...

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

An entertainment organization masquerading as a news organization. If it were serious about news reporting, it would get some viewers outside the U.S., but sadly it specializes in ego-inflation performance art for ex-politican pundits.

We can watch BBC and ABC news segments in Japan, but I don't think FOX is available. Palin, Huckabee, and the rest are not considered A-list celebs here. Nobody outside of FOX fans really cares if Huckabee can play his bass guitar.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Old Hawk

Always entertaining to hear the opinions of people 8,000 miles away with limited new sources.

It's just not right is it? People just don't appreciate how the Tea Party and its supporters have moved beyond mere criticism. They are out there on their own - blazing a trail of their own - just like the religious extremists who first settled America....

0 ( +2 / -2 )

As usual, outsiders can see it and say it a lot more clearly and more easily than the locals. Australia is bang on on this.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

viking68:

Well, if the Republicans offered those things (Freedom and Liberty (personal responsibility is a part of liberty)), I would be right there with them.

They do. Ever hear of the Second Amendment?

Republicans and the extreme right want to instill their sense of morality on everyone.

So do the Democrats and the extreme left (which is redundant these days). Global warming fear mongering, anyone? Wealth redistribution, anyone?

For example, why are the Republicans and the extreme types still talking about abortion? Didn't they read Roe v. Wade? It is history, American law supports freedom of choice.

Beats me, it's not an issue I'm invested in. But from what I gather, Republicans are concerned for the life and liberty of the unborn. By the way, do you know the history of abortion in America and why it was started?

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

@"confirmed kill (Teddy Kennedy)"

You'd make a big fuss if someone substituted that name with Laura Bush, another car crash "killer" in her younger years. Why the double standard?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Tatanka,

Really, seriously think about the question I'm about to ask you now: What part of "The U.S. government never apologized to Muslim nations for the films" do you fail to comprehend? Take your time while you answer.

For all the garbage you spew, you seem awfully ignorant of basic facts.

One, the U.S. government's very own investigation of the attack on the consulate uncovered evidence that it had been planned ahead of time. In other words, the investigation suggest it had nothing to do with the video. And this news is no state secret. It's readily available across the Internet.

Two, of that 47% that you are tripping over yourself to disparage, 22% of them happen to be the retired elderly, a significant cornerstone of the GOP's core constituency. More information that's readily available.

Three, as for your suggestion that all posters here are tax-doging members of that magical 47%, I'm interested to learn how you came to that conclusion. In other words, what empirical evidence do you have to support the statement? Anything...? Anything at all...? No? I thought not.

In the meantime, you clearly have no idea what the heck you're talking about when you claim Obama supporters think he's the next best thing to [sic] the Second Coming.

For one thing, the phrase you seem to be struggling to master is "since the Second Coming." Not "to the Second Coming."

For another, don't you know we're all God-less communists? The Second Coming doesn't mean anything to us. Unless of course, we're all now God-fearing commies, if that's the spin the GOP needs these days to muster support among its fractured base. :-)

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Old Hawk and Tatanka, you're both out of luck, as I'll give you both the "thumbs up". But I give you an "A" just for trying.

BTW, it's tetonka if you mean buffalo.

I'll agree to listen to an Aussie lawmaker criticize how messed up my country's political process is on the day when that nation's government formally recognizes Aborigines in its Constitution.

Like we care what Australia thinks. Next we have to listen to Hugo Chavez notice, he's been pretty silent these days or hear from Ahmadinejad...yawn...next!

I'll agree to listen to an Aussie lawmaker criticize how messed up my country's political process is on the day >when that nation's government formally recognizes Aborigines in its Constitution.

I totally agree. Not all the Vegemite in the world would interest me what any outsider says about my country, we already got enough loons and liberals as it is and now we need to listen to outsiders telling us how to govern?! Aww, Hell NO!

Democrats want to make up the shortfall by increasing taxes on wealthy Americans, while Republicans favor spending cuts.

The interesting thing here is that the US national debt reached a level that is mathematically impossible to cap and repay this week, so any comments on wealth taxes etc to repay debt have become irrelevant. Which points to the ideas that none of them are giving any real information about the financial future either because they have believed a lie, just don't know or hiding the truth along with their secret investment strategies to profit from the impending financial disaster.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

@Bass Unfortunately, what 'outsiders' ( very revealing choice of word ) think is important to US interests. Confidence in US policy is vital in economic and strategic terms. I know many on the US rightwing regard owning a passport as tantamount to treachery but they have to be dragged kicking and screaming outside their comfort zone and deal with commies, pagans and other 'outsiders'.

never ceases to amaze how the US is always happy to dish out advice on other countries political systems and affairs yet can't handle comment from others.... such arrogance - putting Australia (a long standing ally) in the same basket as Chavez and Ahmadinejad... quite sad that its obviously reached the point where you people cant take comments (both good and bad) from anyone outside the "bubble" that is your own self interest....

very noble - insisting on the liberty of the unborn yet retaining the right to the death penalty if things don't work out....

Cranks, crazies, loons and liberals. What a combination!

Wait until the January spending cuts kick in and the tax cuts are ended. Whoever wins this election is probably going to wish they hadnt by inauguration day.

This isnt even criticism, this is just stating facts.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

"Whoever wins this election is probably going to wish they hadnt by inauguration day."

Heh, weren't we all saying that in 2008?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@smith-ya Aussie, your starting to sound like how Aussies term the Yanks, when you look at you from the outside, full of yourself. Dont mention the recent news about Australia saying they have to be careful of their foreign investors-ala China-otherwise they will be spinning down hill too. And a lot quicker than the AMericans I'll bet! Of course the news about Chinese protesting in AUstralia about Japan didnt come to your attention either I guess. And who works right alongside Swan? Wong. That name ring a bell. Bet they cant work out their books without taxing the Australians some more! And they wont tax all that cash that is taken offshore of course, only the industries that are actually creating wrok within Australia like the mining.....the only decent person on the left side at the moment is Gillard their leader, but she has sharks galore surrounding her....and full of himself Abbot in opposition.....ah where will the cookie crumble? Less taxing is definitely a better thing. Or otherwise governments start picking which industries they prefer, like nuclear power and stuff.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Cranks and crazies run the Australian government currently. I'm referring to the incumbent Labor party with it's maligned Greens influence.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Insignificant little crazy crank. Tell you what. You guys send over a drone or something, and we'll look the other way.

he should get the sack for that.

I am going to come clean, I have absolutely NO problems with Aussies they have been a good friend and ally and YES, you are 100% correct, so my sincerest apologies, It came out the wrong way. Hey, when you are wrong, you are wrong. What I meant to say was that, I don't like people like Swan trying to vilify Conservatives or Republicans just because we want a fiscally conservative America, it's very offensive to me. But I don't mind ANY foreigners criticizing the US, the people or the country have nothing to do with it, but I lived and worked with Aussies, we have many living in Cali. So I am not perfect, it's not the country or the people, but the individual.

@nostromo

never ceases to amaze how the US is always happy to dish out advice on other countries political systems and affairs yet can't handle comment from others.... such arrogance -

I agree with applying this to bass4funk and a scary proportion of the American public, but I think you should be careful about applying such arrogance to the American populace as a whole.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Question - why should anyone give a rat's arse what the Australian treasurer says or thinks? Except maybe his wife.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

why should anyone give a rat's arse what the Australian treasurer says or thinks?

Maybe because he's a prominent member of a government closely allied to the States? Go ahead, ignore him, disdain your allies, America, and don't come crying when Australia signs a defence pact with China.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Maybe because he's a prominent member of a government closely allied to the States?

I'm not saying we should ignore our allies - when they have something worthwhile to say. Insulting a political party is not a worthwhile comment to make. If they were insulting the other side, you'd likely say the same thing.

Besides, the president has no problem ignoring our Israeli allies now does he, and I think they are at least equally as important as Australia. And discussions with Israel aren't about whether or not they like one of our political parties.

And also, just because someone is a prominent member of their political process doesn't mean they aren't a jackass.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

And also, just because someone is a prominent member of their political process doesn't mean they aren't a jackass.

Indeed. I offer George W. in evidence and rest my case ; )

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

"I'm not saying we should ignore our allies - when they have something worthwhile to say"

Not just when it is something you agree with? Heh.

People frequently crap on the US unfairly and when they do, I take it up with them. And vice-versa.

If anyone thinks the Republicans new-found policy of politicizing the debt ceiling in opposition as they did last year (despite constantly voting to lift it for years prior) isn't a huge threat the the world economy, then they need their heads examining.

Perhaps the Treasurer was a tad blunt, but then again....

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Indeed. I offer George W. in evidence and rest my case ; )

I could counter with Jimmy Carter (even typing the name makes me shudder with horror). But you actually raise a good point in a sense. Pointing out that you think someone/some group are idiots is not really newsworthy - unless you're part of the biased media opposed to that particular person or group. Media bias has been around forever and isn't a new thing.

And no Madverts, it's not just because I don't agree with the fellow, but because I simply don't really give a damn what someone from another country - or even my own - cares about on that level. Criticizing a policy or a viewpoint or something else is at least interesting. What if I were secretary of dirty baby diapers, and said that all Australians were descendents of former criminals - would it be worth anyone really caring? And you're so high and mighty - but as you point out, if they were saying that liberals are a bunch of hypocritical dope smoking hippies you'd be screaming worse than I am.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

@Tiger

You make a good point regarding the media, but are you seriously comparing Dubya with Carter. Carter is, quite simply, a good man. Not much of an accolade in these days of media hype, but true nonetheless. Bush is a selfish, grasping idiot.

Nothing to do with with party politics. Just a comment on two human beings.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

" And you're so high and mighty - but as you point out, if they were saying that liberals are a bunch of hypocritical dope smoking hippies you'd be screaming worse than I am."

Why would I do that?

Personal attacks as you should know are water of the duck's back to me, why don't you try sticking to the topic and counter-attack what I wrote about the GOP and its shameless politicizing of the debt ceiling?

:)

Krugmam nails it:

Where does this disdain for workers come from? Some of it, obviously, reflects the influence of money in politics: big-money donors, like the ones Mr. Romney was speaking to when he went off on half the nation, don’t live paycheck to paycheck. But it also reflects the extent to which the G.O.P. has been taken over by an Ayn Rand-type vision of society, in which a handful of heroic businessmen are responsible for all economic good, while the rest of us are just along for the ride. In the eyes of those who share this vision, the wealthy deserve special treatment, and not just in the form of low taxes. They must also receive respect, indeed deference, at all times. That’s why even the slightest hint from the president that the rich might not be all that — that, say, some bankers may have behaved badly, or that even “job creators” depend on government-built infrastructure — elicits frantic cries that Mr. Obama is a socialist.

Now, such sentiments aren’t new; “Atlas Shrugged” was, after all, published in 1957. In the past, however, even Republican politicians who privately shared the elite’s contempt for the masses knew enough to keep it to themselves and managed to fake some appreciation for ordinary workers. At this point, however, the party’s contempt for the working class is apparently too complete, too pervasive to hide.

Absolutely! This is but one reason I made my "8,000 miles away with limited news sources" comment.

What does the death penalty have to do with liberty? Other than permanently removing a proven societal threat, protecting the lives of others. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, right? Such crazy extremists nonsense from political cranks, according the Australian Leftists. And what does it have to do with abortion? With personal liberty comes personal responsibility and accountability (so far unknown to Democrat politicians), so why shouldn't a murderer expect to be put to death himself?

Oh, the irony! Bush is in a quiet retirement, avoiding the spotlight and not commenting on his successor's job performance. Carter has done exactly the opposite, and has even actively campaigned for accolades. Carter was always, and remains, an insecure, petty, little man.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

Swan's comments seem intemperate and unwise. The election belongs to Americans, and foreign politicians should keep their noses out of it.

Besides, one of those "cranks and crazies" could be in the White House next year. These insults aren't a good basis for a relationship.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"Swan, named by banking magazine Euromoney as its finance minister of the year in 2011" Everyone knows about him who he was in Australia. He is just lucky bustard. He got credit for Peter Costello hard work. Wayn Swan and JUlia Gillard are worst PM and Treasurer in Australian political history. The Labor wasted billions of dollars for nothing. Australia has huge debt even though unexpected Mining boom new taxes invented by Labor Government. Australia will be left with huge debt by Labor Government once they lost election next year. I'm sick of hypocrite of Wayn Swan and Julia Gillard since they found Government by help of Green and idiot 3 Independent MPs. Julia Gillard and Labor does not win last election but highjack by 3 idiot Independent MPs and stupid Green. Please, ignore what you heard from creepy, crazy, hypocrite Wayn Swan. No one has recognized Julia Gillard and Labor has mandate to govern Australia because they lost the election but save by idiot stupid Green and Independents.

woops.

Yes, it is disturbing. The Republican hard right turn right off the cliff is very disturbing. It started in the 90s. with Newt and then Delay. Bush was bad, really bad, for America. His tax cuts and his unfunded adventurism in Iraq contrary to the long-term heath of our economy and position in the world. But not catastrophic.

But President Palin? Palin was a catastrophe.

No responsible person could have caste a vote for that ticket.

The party is now held hostage to the cranks and the crazies.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@Alan, thanks! Never heard of this word CRANK used for what I would call idiots, fools, nut cases but nice to be multi lingual and know that our amigos down under use this word CRANK in such an interesting way. By the way the only other term, usage I remember for CRANK was a really bad drug that was popular in the late 1980s?? Early 1990s in the USA, does this drug have anything to day with the Aussie use of the word crank??

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@Elbuda I've heard the word "crank" used in that way in all of my countries, including England, New Zealand and Australia, so I thought it was pretty much universal in the English-speaking world. I believe it's derived in some way from the crank handles used to start old cars. I don't recall a drug called crank. Perhaps you mean crack cocaine?
