A sign of a totalitarian political movement is when they crack down on protests.

Protesting is illegal?

Protesting and gathering are two different things. You can protest all you want. As loud as you want. But you can't take others hostage. And if they're making mischief or they didn't get a permit to assemble, then I don't see any problem at all. Democracy does not equal anarchy. Protesting is not the same as trying to break things, to attack people, the police or other repressive forces. Many of them did not come to protest, rather they came to fight and revel in violence.
