Enjoy your cruise as best as you can folks. Port cities simply can not afford to allow Novel virus-suspected passengers to disembark in their cities. The possibility of infecting a few thousand people pales in comparison to the possibility of infecting millions. A successful vaccine is coming. Hopefully it will created, and distributed, sooner rather than later.

It's nice to hope, but realistically, 18 months would be 5-6 times faster than most vaccines take. I don't think that's going to help anyone on a cruise ship right now.

Shortcuts are being taken, government regulations are being sidestepped. I'm gonna hope for sooner.
As far as the cruise ship passengers are concerned, it's called "triage". Someone has to make a hard decision on the order of treatment for a large (and ever increasing) number of patients. Risk the lives of 3,000 or risk the lives of 3,000,000.

Too bad they didn't get off the ship at Punta Arenas. Not much of a town, but the wildlife nearby is absolutely amazing provided you dress for the cold and wind, even in south American summer. When we visited, minivans and larger vehicles were being flipped on the highways the wind was so strong.
Patagonia has many "only there" species like the Guanacos, rheas (like emus), the Andean condor and just a few hrs away is the Torres del Paine National park with amazing hikes, waterfalls, and some other species probably not actually seen, but their impact is seen as a puma kill.
At least they were in BsAs. Hope they got some excellent pizza there. Best in the world at El Cuartito, IMHO. Every place we visit, we look for the best pizza, usually it is ok to good, but El Cuartito was so excellent to be above all others.
Santiago was ok, but felt like most other large South American cities to me. Much of their current history is about overthrowing dictators and abuses of native peoples. Haven't heard much since the riots there last fall. Santiago would be ideal for an electric scooter to get around, provided it folded for subway/bus rides. Most of the city is flat with a few hills.
A breakdown of the passenger nationalities would help shame the countries with the most passengers into helping. OTOH, they did get to go through the Panama Canal. That's still on my bucket list and I've been all around South and Central America.
