This Huckaby women should hang from the highest tree! How the hell can anybody even think of killing a little girl? Let alone your own daughter's friend? This is very sick and twisted and this women does not deserve to be out in public roaming around waiting to kill innocent children. Hang! Hang! Hang!

I sort of agree with the idea that IF she is guilty then she should be executed, there really isn’t ant need to keep people like this alive. But do you not worry a little at your level of passion over a child you do not know? You need to calm down.

No, he doesn't. Would you help an old lady getting mugged on the subway? Would you help me drowning in a lake?

This lady needs to be fried!

She should be kept alive so she can be studied. Maybe we can gain knowledge from how her brain works to help prevent future cases like this. Obviously there's something wrong upstairs....

this makes me sick.

Josie Orozco, who lives in the complex “She knew what she was doing. She could have asked for help. She could have gone to a doctor if she was sick this way,” Orozco said.

It is sad that someone/something raped and killed this little girl. I just hope that the police did not rush to convict anyone since they were under pressure to find the killer.

This woman has already lost the public opinion war in this case. I do hope that she gets a fair trial. I hate the fact that most criminal cases if not all cases in America have become more about public opinion rather than hard evidence.

More and more people are going to jail these days because of circumstantial evidence rather than because of the facts. I hope they (the police) looked at all possible leads before charging this woman.

Just because officers bring charges against some does not mean that the person is guilty. We rush to judgment so quickly these days and we forget that the person is innocent till proven guilty.

I believe that justice must be void of public opinion. Justice must be served through the evidence. If this case is one of "he said/she said", "I think I saw" or even "I believe she is guilty because it was her suitcase" then this case has no merit.

There must be physical evidence for a conviction to come through. But if this case is built on weak circumstantial evidence then she will walk.

In my book California does not have the best record in the United States when it comes to police work.

Joe

You're right that people shouldn't convict her in the court of public opinion before she should gets a fair trial, but have you seen her on the TV news? She certainly isn't acting like an innocent person who's been wrongly accused of a crime and she certainly hasn't denied guilt. It looks more like she's crying and distraught because the gravity and mostrosity of what she's done is hitting home...

You are looking at this too much from an Anglo American stand point.

she attended church and was a Sunday school teacher. In that case, its impossible that she carried out this crime, there must be a mistake.....

She should also have a hate crime charge placed against her. You all know the little guy was Hispanic right?

Her kids are going to pay a terrible price.

@skip: You can't blame religion on one (or a releative few) bad apples. Religion has turned around and reformed a much higher number of former criminals. Using your argument in reverse, everyting a violent crime is committed by an athiest or agnostic, they should be required to join an organized religion. Obviously not practical.

SkipTheSong, I don't know about your neck of the woods, but I sure don't want religion banned in my nation.

After the benevolence of the American taxpayer, the second largest charitable organization in the States is the Catholic Church. -And they don't care about another's philosophy, only their need.

Innocent until proven guilty. There seems to be no evidence. One thing odd though is that she reported her suit case stolen. Who would report a stolen suit case, unless there was a break in and other stuff stolen too.

What? The murdered child was a caucasian girl, no?

Don't worry, she will not get the death penalty. Part of North American culture is that men are "evil" by nature and any man that commits a crime must be punished fully but women are "pure by nature and can never be "evil." If a woman commits a crime it is always because she is sick and needs treatment. I'm sure it was hormones, wink wink, and the poor woman is a victim of not getting proper care for her delicate condition.

Sorry, I wasn't really passing judgment, I was just saying that people who would do this need to be studied by psychiatrists. Maybe it's her or someone else, I really don't know specifically.

String her up.

Skipthesong: "You are looking at this too much from an Anglo American stand point."

Would you drop the race-card crap? Suggesting that JoeBigs' comment may have less relevance or his reaction the way it is because of his background is ludicrous. The child's background also has no bearing on how we on here feel about the crime -- particularly since most people are saying the woman in question, if indeed guilty, deserves to be severely punished (and in more than one case executed!). Now, if someone had come on here and said, "Oh wait! She's an Hispanic... well... let's downgrade the charge to manslaughter and give her a few years" THEN I would be concerned. For now, check your personal feelings about race at the door, please.

I agree with all here that what happened is sick. The murder of a child, or rape, is absolutely disgusting and should be unbearable for all. However, doing BOTH really pushes it over the edge in terms of heinousness. I don't believe in the death penalty, but the person, if convicted, should get life for the murder, and the max penalty for rape of a minor (in this case a child). I also agree that while the woman appears slightly guilty in demeanor, we can't condemn her yet (easy to, but we shouldn't).

Bang on... and that applies to ALL religions.

The whole darned country is freaking weird about sex. All this crying over the sex/rape allegations. HELLO! The girl is DEAD. Everything pales in comparison to that. Then we have:

The special circumstances mean Huckaby, if convicted, could face the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole.

And without the "special circumstances" then what? Out in 10 to 20? Would not be surprised. In my not so humble opinion TO HECK with the special circumstances. TO HECK with the kidnapping adding to the possible sentencing too. If guilty of pre-meditated murder, that should be life without parole RIGHT THERE. From there, I would be happy with the same for murder in the process of a kidnapping. I find it BIZARRE, IN THE EXTREME, that murder is somehow forgiveable, but anything, anything at all sexual involving a child and suddenly people are either sobbing or shouting "hang, hang, hang!"

Not saying you have to like it, but it could have ranged from somewhere along the lines of playing doctor to a painful completely brutal rape with a foreign object. There is a question mark there. Murder, however, has absolutely NO question mark after it, and seems to me to be the absolute most unforgiveable aspect of this or any similar case.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Oh, and to add to the above, I will be absolutely disgusted if she is found not guilty of the "special circumstances" but guilty of the murder, and winds up walking the streets again in a decade or two.

skipthesong: I've never done any type of criminal act where I would hurt an innocent person, especially a kid - and that includes quite a few smart mouths I've come across too.

Because you have been instilled with morals, something we can thank religion for even you have dispensed with the religion itself. Further, there are a LOT of people out there, of lesser mental capacity than you and I, who simply NEED to have that spiritual element to keep them in line, whether it is a belief in punishment in the afterlife or God watching them in real time from above.

It was not enough for this woman, but I would hate to think how many similar crimes would happen without religion or the moral base religion has given us.

Well I am Hispanic and to be honest, it does not matter one bit about the girls race. She (Sandra Cantu) was murdered by someone. That someone needs to spend the rest of it's life where it can get help and repay for it's crime.

But we as a people (Americans) have this tendency to convict anyone who the authorities say committed a crime. That we forget that it is the State (Federal also) that needs to prove the guilt of that person.

What happens to this women if it comes out that she is not guilty? I suspect no one will ever trust her to teach Sunday school ever again. Why? Well she was convicted in the public's eye before the case even went to trial.

but have you seen her on the TV news?

Hell with the right camera angle you can make a saint look like a sinner. Sin sells news, saints do not. This case is a ratings victory for the media. All the while, how many more children are dying?

We as a people need to make sure that our Justice system follows the rules. If they do not then criminals will walk with the right amount of money.

Gag orders need to be enforced by the judges. But that never happens, judges need to get re-elected. The more publicity the more votes that judge will get. That to me is real sad..... We need to make sure that our Justice system works for everyone, not just those that can pay.

So let us not convict, you never know, the glove might not fit.

If this turns out to be true this must be one of a very few women who are child rapists and murderers. I'll guaranty everyone was looking for a man in this case (probably of the creepy drifter variety). I guess I'm pretty shocked not just at the horrible crime but the fact that it was a neighbor and a mother at that. If Melissa Huckaby did this crime I think the death penalty is appropriate unfortunately they do it humanely.

This woman hasn’t been found guilty & you already want her set on fire & hung up at the same time? I said it before calm down, let’s start by getting the court case done with first & then IF she is found guilty you can ask for (though perhaps in a civilised society not get) whatever punishment you want. I agree that this is a horrible crime & I feel incredibly sorry for what this little girl must have gone through. But neither you nor I knew this child & yet you have already got a seriously grisly end for this woman going through your head. Let’s wait for the verdict shall we?

I was stunned that a woman was being charged with the murder of a 8 year old girl. That in itself was so incredibly bad.

Then I read that she was also charged with rape of this little girl. I was simply appalled.

I know she's innocent till proven guilty, but the crime is so horrible, then a woman is charged with it. So disturbing.

Then the parents have to deal with the death of their child. A death that will be dragged through the news, excreated through media sources and they won't be allowed to mourn in private, away from the press and the world for a long time. I pray for their and little Sandra's comfort. < :-)

some people need to calm down and wait for solid evidence
