Horrible! Now chemical attacks and what will the USA, NATO etc..do?? Nothing?? What in the hell is going on there in Syria!! I am not an Arab, just a fellow human here on JT, but this really, really makes me sick! Is this what the Russians and Chinese and Iranians want to support?? All of the "friends of Assad"??

Desperate people (losing terrorists) do desperate things. And you can only assume it will get worse. Egypt may even get worse than this.

This is nothing but an attempt by the American and Arab League supporters of the rebels against the legitimate Syrian Government to show the latter in bad light. If chemical weapons had truly been used there would have been large scale and higher deaths than reported. Obviously these same people plotted to use chemical weapons selectively to get the most publicity. After Iraq, whoever believes in what America says and does with any other bands of people or countries are either totally blind or choose to be ignorant.

They are itching to do something. Unfortunately (for them), nobody is buying their desperate attempts to frame the Syrian government.

Indeed, it is very sickening. But those who did this (and similar previous attacks) are supported by the US, UK, France, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Qatar, ...

Here is an excellent analysis of the lead up to this chemical attack:

As I have said before, when this crisis started, just before the UNSC was to meet to discuss what to do about Syria, we were told that Assad had ordered snipers to murder a bunch of innocent civilians.

And now, after months of Assad winning back control of the country and clobbering the mainly-foreign "rebel" forces, and the west itching to help overthrow him by sending weapons and possibly boots on the ground, and right when the UN is there to investigate allegations of chemical weapon use, we are expected to believe that Assad decided it was a good time to use chemical weapons!!!! How stupid do these propaganda agents think the world is?

Where does Syrian Government's legitimacy come from? It is a dictatorship; President Esad holds his position, simply because his father was president once. So called elections in Syria are jokes, there are any candidate against Esad and he always wins with a landslide such as 98 or 99 percent, that is illogical.

The scale of the destruction can be adjusted according to the amount used, moreover who says that this is not large scale attack, more than 1.000 people have been allegedly killed. Look at the videos, many people were killed with no apparent wound or blood trace. They seem to suffocate to death, how did they suffocate?

UN inspectors are already in the country; they should go to the spot and make inspections immediately. If chemical weapons use, is proven independently, we had better talk about international military intervention.

There's the problem. The inspectors can't go anywhere or do anything without permission from the government. It's impossible for the UN to verify anything.

The victims are real enough, but the true source of the attack is not known. Could as easily been by opposition forces as regime forces or others as well.

@Jean

You're right that people shouldn't jump to conclusions, but the Assad regime has well-documented stores of chemical weapons. And if the government is confident that it wasn't itself involved, why not allow the inspectors in?

It's significant that the pro-Assad Russian government isn't joining in with calls for a UN inspection, perhaps they know something we don't....

The inspectors ARE in. In fact, the attack occurred just minutes away from where the UN inspectors are staying.

Yes, the government does have chemical weapons. But they are winning this conflict, Assad would be completely insane to do this now, just two days after the inspectors arrive and just minutes away from where the inspectors are staying.

If you bothered checking the link I provided above, you would know about the video the "rebels" released last December, showing "rebels" killing a rabbit with poisonous gas and saying something like "You saw what happened. This will be your fate you infidel Alawites. I swear by Allah to make you die like these rabbits." And the "rebels" have been implicated by the UN in a previous chemical attack in Syria. And the "rebels" did overrun a chlorine factory months ago, followed by an attack with a chlorine-based gas.

I am sorry, but EVERYTHING points to the "rebels" having committed the heinous crime. And the west will continue to back them, likely increase their backing. Disgusting!

@Bluescript

Sure, the inspectors are "in".They're only fifteen minutes' drive from the site of the attack. They're just being prevented from doing any inspecting. The government ought to be urging them to do their job in order to remove any suspicions regarding state involvement. But no, quite the opposite. Why?

Where would the opposition get chemical weapons? And hasn't the Syrian government admitted to having them?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

And hasn't the Syrian government admitted to having them? That's true, in 2012 July, Syria admitted that they have chemical weapons but said they were for external ennemies. Also please remember that President Esad threatened international community to use chemical weapons (against them) if an multi-national military intervention would be carried out. So yes they have chemical weapons.

Depends on the chemical weapon but some are quite easy to make with nothing but household cleaners. There is also the possibility that some of Assad's chemical weapons have been captured by the Rebels.

It's hard to defend U.S. administration's claims regarding the use of chemical weapons in Syria and recognize it may just be an attempted justification to send weapons to the rebels. Just what is it they expect to find? Whatever it is they won't find it and go back to the U.N. with a story that will inflame them so that they'll then have what they feel is adequate reason to step in. The U.S. and Russia may both be scrambling around in an effort to secure claims to the 400K barrels of oil Syria produces every day.

Well, if you checked the link I provided above, you would know, And now, there is more, the Syrian government forces have just uncovered a "rebel" chemical weapons facility:
