“Vinay Sharma was badly tortured in jail by other inmates who pounced on him. He was not in a position to stand up in court because he was in great pain,”

An evil part of me is really tempted to say "good", but of course it's not. It's a shame, more than anything, that it took what these evil people did for them to learn what it's like the other way around. There is probably going to be a LOT more of this kind of thing coming for these guys. Again, if only people would take a moment to think about the potential consequences of their actions before doing them...

SOB should have been gang-raped in jail and metal or broom handle stuck-up his arse. Kinda remind him about the agony, pain, and life she forfited when all those SOBs raped her on the bus.

At the moment he's just accused of the crime, and he's innocent until prove guilty. Need I remind those commenting here that the police in India are well known for just grabbing the nearest suspect and throwing them in prison, and then popping off for a nice nap?

Until he's proven gulty he has the same right to safety that any innocent person has... afterward he's been proven guilty, well, if he slips on a bar of soap and impales himself on a steel bar I won't be shedding any tears.

When did guilty become a death sentence?

This is what I hate about the American penal system and makes them so primitive, the idea that arse rape is all inclusive in a prison sentence.

A pound of flesh is what the law requires, nothing more and nothing less.

He's LUCKY he's not in Jail in the USA; he'd be DEAD already.

@ Dog: These guys are in an Indian jail, the American penal system has nothing to do with this case. I don't think that it is just an "American thing" in regards to sexual assualt on prisoners, I believe it happens the world over. Ijust hope that they did indeed have the right persons on trial for this case. If so, I am one in the crowd who also believes that if this is one of the persons involved in the crime, he derserved to get his "arse whupped."

The last sentence of this article is by far the worst. I... dont even really know what to say. Im against the death penalty, but men like that don't deserve any better.

All of these should be confined in that particular jail for life.

A painless death would be too merciful for this gang.

“I know we will not get justice in Delhi”.

I'm not concerned about justice for rapists. I'm concerned about justice for the slain woman.

I hate this kind of crap in prison, and as an American am shamed that so many American hillbillies seem to think that "if you are convicted of the crime, say goodbye to your anal virginity" is an amusing thing to say. It is sad, and it isn't justice, though the guys who did this are truly the lowest form of man.

I also think of all the girls who had this happen to them who weren't medical students, who were of a really low caste, and thus we never hear about them.

Excuse me while I go kiss my sleeping daughter.

Dog Jan. 17, 2013 - 10:01PM JST When did guilty become a death sentence?

When the guilty party will be place in an over-crowded, under-funded Indian prison where the inmates hate him and will undoubtedly eventually kill him.

I would view it as reasonable to keep an innocent (until proven guilty) man separated from the general population until after his trial, however I don't think that a case can be made for keeping him separate after sentencing as other prisoners of less high-profile cases have to deal with the same conditions, and it would in effect amount to rewarding notorious criminals.

This is what I hate about the American penal system and makes them so primitive, the idea that arse rape is all inclusive in a prison sentence.

The key difference is that the American penal system has the funding and technology to make prisons safe, while in India there is neither the funding nor technology to make the prisons safer. This is not about what I would LIKE to happen, I am merely acknowledging what is very likely to happen and stating that I would shed no tears over it in this instance.

A pound of flesh is what the law requires, nothing more and nothing less.

The law also requires humane prison conditions, but visit Amnesty International and read their report on Indian prisons and you'll see that inmates convicted of very minor offences (begging, petty theft, etc.) often end up suffering tremendously at the hands of other prisoners, with insufficient guards to intervene even when they see what is happening. If someone convicted of something minor like panhandling is going to be assaulted then why should these rapists be spared?

This shows India has a few problems to deal with. First of all this heinous crime, now a suspect is beaten up and on top of that

A wide-ranging gagging order has been imposed on media reporting of the case.

As if not being able to talk about it would make it better.

The consequences are so severe that I can only hope police did catch the right criminals.

“It is sad the jail authorities cannot provide security to them,” he added.

No, what's sad is that a woman can't even be out with a male friend and be safe, let alone out alone. That's sad.

They're both sad, quite frankly.
